Last week, Afford held its Annual Golf Day at Twin Creeks Golf Club in Luddenham. We were blessed with perfect weather and a room full of Afford Supporters, who donated generously and again took time our of their schedules to support our our annual event.
- Afford Selfies - Have a Laugh
The day featured a number of fun events including: a 'Beat the Pro' round, 18 holes of golf involving a special 'survival ball' and a very fun ball station hole, teams skins event, another four secret holes, a delicious lunch, raffles, silent auction, and of course the trophy presentation. With the growing reputation and beautiful weather attracting a large number of businesses from across Sydney, Afford were able to raise over $43,000 - all goes towards our great new services such as or Allied Health, and to provide above-and-beyond offerings at our Lifestyle Centres. This is the 10th year the Annual Afford Golf Day has taken place and it would not be possible without months of work from our Events Team Rhiannon O’Brien, Toni Preston and Kara Palmieri who were assisted by fantastic volunteers like Rob Richards and a handful of staff. Special guests on the day included Steve Waugh, Brad McNamara, Gavin Robertson and Luke Harris! We also have many Afford Supporters to thank who sponsored or donated prizes this year. Without their ongoing support and generosity, events like this would not be the same. Well done to everyone and we look forward to the fun in store for next year.

A Special Mother's Day Residents enjoyed a shortterm accommodation stay at St Marys over Mother's Day weekend. Staff assisted clients to make some special Mother's Day cards to take home after the weekend’s fun, to let their mums know how special they are. We hope that all the Afford Mothers had a wonderful Mother's Day.

Cherrywood renovations are full-steam ahead and the amazing transformation of the soon to be Supersite is shining through. Glenn and Geoff have produced all the work currently in the sensory garden, with the finishing touches like our garden beds and totem poles to be added with help from our clients. We are working on different themes for the space including: a walk-through fairy garden with seating, the old car garden in the centre of the area (which is a key feature), an old speed boat that will be opened on one side so the clients can explore while surrounded by a beach theme. We are also looking at having a Balinese area constructed. A beautiful new mural in the Sensory Garden area has been completed thanks to the Penrith City Council's Magnetic Places Grants Program 2017, and artist Diamondo. We are currently up to painting, appliance and blind quotes. The kitchen will come across from the current Penrith Lifestyle Centre in Henry St once they move across to their new site next door to the gardens - which will be after the fencing is installed in front of the activity block.

- 1st place winner was Bo Gartside (Warehouse Supervisor Ingleburn)Was nominated for being extremely committed to work, his long hours and always making sure work gets done for major customers. He is always there for supported employees who are trained on the floor. Bo has shown a great strength in character and resilience to help the Ingleburn site get through one of the most trying few months an ADE has seen. In doing this over 700 pallets of customer product was worked on and dispatched, stengthening and saving our relationship with a major ADE customer. - 2nd Place - Meagan Bartczak (Afford Employment – Vocational Trainer)Megan received second place and was nominated for being calm under pressure. When covering a shift one of the trainees had an accident in the toilet. Meagan calmly and without hesitation went into the toilet and cleaned up all the mess. - 2nd place – Amy Prince (Lifestyle Assistant – Mt. Druitt) - In early March Amy had a call from a client expressing their distress of their home being broken into. Amy did not hesitate to contact police, and then go to the client’s house to provide support. Amy then supported this client to receive some counseling that night to ensure they felt calm and safe. Amy never hesitates (despite being in her last trimester of her pregnancy) to go above and beyond in supporting her clients. She is compassionate and has such a big heart. She always ensures her clients feel safe and that they have someone to talk to that they can trust. Amy doesn’t leave her clients side until they’re 100% happy. - 3rd place – Toni Preston (Communication, Fundraising, Events and Special Programs Co-ordinator)Although she’s had a terrible time the last 2 weeks she has attended work on the weekend and early hours of the morning to ensure critical aspects of her duties were done. This shows a great team player who goes the extra mile in her role.
