As part of working for an Employer of Choice, supported employees got to enjoy a fully catered lunch, full of tasty dishes like succulent roast pork with crackling and super juicy roast chicken, not to mention the delicious side dishes – a mixture of Roast Vegies and Pasta Bake and everyone’s favourite part of the meal, dessert! Mini apple pies were merrily dished up with ice-cream and warm custard. YUM! We also got to celebrate some great achievements on the day, including some of our amazing Supported Employees who took part in Nepean Community College completing a Certificate I in General Education for Adults & Learners Club where they were taught all aspects of technology and how to use IPADS. The Employee of the Month and Achievement Award of the Month Awards were also awarded to some very deserving recipients. All were filled with cheer, and cannot wait for the next quarterly BBQ!

Hello From Monica!

“Hello there everyone! I am Monica, named after the world famous Santa Monica in California and I would like to tell you how extraordinary Afford Employment is. I have been with several job agencies in the past, but none of them compared to the hospitality, support and understanding that the beautiful people at Afford have offered me. I am still a pretty new client but from my own personal experience I can say that this organisation is world class and I am blessed to be an Afford Client. Like myself many others suffer with disabilities such as chronic depression, Trauma and other things. Afford caters for all and is there to listen and help when you need it. Just like Hot Wheels they make everything epic and finding a new job and course. The people at Afford are bold and beautiful with charisma, professionalism and life experiences. It is one of the best places to be.” - Monica, DES Client

Mona’s Employment Milestones

CHOICE

Mona Hana has been a client at Bankstown DES since June this year. She had a goal to find a sustainable and suitable employment that would add to her life socially and financially, and most importantly get her mind away from her traumatic memories from back in Syria before her recent arrival in Australia. Mona wanted to be more active physical and have more involvement in her new community in Australia Mona has a struggled with her physical limitations and mental health issues, making her feel like a prisoner in her own home, and not being able to participate and be an active citizen in her new country. Language was also an issue that Mona was struggling with, alongside a lack of qualifications and experience. Employment Consultant, Amar Saboun has worked tirelessly on preparing Mona for interviews and also trying to move her away from bad memories. Amar also helped prepare a resume for Mona and put Mona forward to suitable and supportive employers that can speak Mona’s language. Mona attended 2 interviews and successfully gained employment in a local pizza shop, where she just successfully passed her 3 month employment milestone, and on track to reach her 6 months milestone. Mona is doing great working as part of a team and it has uplifted her enthusiasm and confidence. After successfully placing Mona, Amar also keeps going every week to see both the employer and Mona for post placement support and in order to prevent any issues that might face Mona if she finds herself in new situations and provide more support and assistance to ensure Mona’s is a long-term success story.

Dancing Talent at Chipping Norton Chipping Norton Lifestyle Centre are running a dance program every Monday, which clients from the ondell Park Lifestyle Centre visit and join in on. The classes are taught by Jeanette, and the clients from both sites are so excited on waiting for Jeanette to arrive each Monday. The clients are focussing on practising for Affords got Talent at the end of the year, to showcase all they have learnt on the big stage! It is great to see all their smiling faces and to be working towards a communal goal.

Master Chefs at the Lurnea Every Tuesday, the cooking program at the Lurnea Lifestyle Centre has proven to be a big hit with the clients, who turn the Lurnea site into a mini ‘pop-up’ restaurant. The clients go to the local shops and buy all their ingredients, building relationships with members of the community as they go. The shop keepers are all fantastic and really take the time to help explain the change required, the purpose of receipts and so on. Then they cannot wait to get back on site to start cooking. This week’s menu was roasted chicken with oven-baked potatoes and gravy and a side salad, as well as pudding with custard for dessert. While some clients are preparing and cooking, other clients are setting the tables with knives and forks and ever adding different table decorations like fresh flowers. All agree, the best part of cooking is getting to try all the yummy food!
