This week Afford clients took to the stage to perform at the Annual Afford’s Got Talent at the Joan Sutherland Centre’s Q Theatre in Penrith. The night began with a lovely barbeque dinner and a chance for our clients to socialise with peers from different sites, but then it was time to get down to business. The atmosphere was electric! Everyone in the theatre was so excited to get up on stage and perform routines that they have been practicing for many weeks and months. The audience were thoroughly entertained by all of the acts, with many of the audience members even getting involved in the dancing and singing. It was a magnificent showcase of the range of talents we have in our Afford community. This year’s event featured a record number of acts, with 37 performances across our sites.

One of the stand-out performances was from Connor from Ingleburn TTW who captivated the audience with his rendition of ‘You Raise Me Up’. Well done and congratulations to all the stars who delivered a wonderful show for the crowd and to the Afford Events team for organising such a wonderful night.

They are a very keen car washing team and have already washed the cars of staff and neighbours. Their rates are very reasonable, so far they have raised $45 and are looking forward to raising even more in the coming weeks. It’s not just about washing cars though. Residents also need to collect the money and update their spreadsheet - which they have put together with staff support - to manage and track their earnings which is a great exercise in money training. The group is so motivated and excited to be part of the car washing team. All at Afford can’t wait to hear about the results of their car washing effort and the fun had on their Christmas outing!
Caps Off to Akash
A big congratulations to Akash on graduating from Western Sydney University Parramatta with a Bachelor of Business and Commerce in Accounting. He started his studies in 2014 and has enjoyed studying, which has helped improved his confidence and leadership skills. Akash is one of Afford’s stars! Akash initially came to Afford from DES Blacktown and is one of our success stories from the reimagined Afford Employment, that has each of its three arms working collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcomes for clients. Akash has worked in the Scanning Department in Afford ADEs and has done a great job working on his projects there. Akash has been a valuable addition to the team and is now not only working within our ADEs completing administration, but he has also recently taken on a role with our Marketing Department. Further to this, Akash is now moving into NAV user entry and entry of our NDIS participants. Akash hopes to someday get a full-time role in accounting, but for now is loving his role at Afford: “I am so happy to achieve this, as it has been a big effort. I will miss studying and all my friends and teachers at Uni”.

CHOICE
The Fitness Passport is one of Afford’s Employer of Choice healthy living initiatives introduced almost 12 months ago. The program aims to encourage staff to keep fit and active by attending a gym or leisure centre in your chosen area. Afford reimburse part of your membership costs associated with this program. This initiative has been an outstanding success and helped support our staff in making life changing habits. Michelle (Afford staff member) began her fitness journey using the fitness passport when it was offered at the end of 2016. “I use the Fitness Passport 4 to 5 times a week across four different fitness centres. I love that it gives me the flexibility to choose different locations to train and keep my exercise regime exciting. I would never visit a gym before having the Fitness Passport, now I’m loving it. I have lost 30kgs since last year and this initiative has changed my life.” Now there are even more locations to choose from, with Fitness Passport recently announcing more amazing facilities now available! For those staff members that signed up for the Fitness Passport membership and aren’t using it because you weren’t able to maximise your membership, take the step to visit a fitness centre and see what they offer. Remember, there is a 12 month minimum contract period for Fitness Passport, so if you don’t use it you will need to pay a cancellation fee. Set your New Year’s resolution to be taking time to get active and using your Fitness Passport. It’s a move that will change your life.
