RENEWED REFRESHED EDITION SPECIAL& 200TH EDITION
CELEBRATING 200 EDITIONS OF STAFF MATTERS
It is with great pride that we bring you the 200th edition of Staff Matters. The journey that Afford has been on since Issue 1 was released on 24 April 2015 has been astounding and together, we have truly achieved extraordinary things. The anniversary of our 200th edition of Staff Matters is an excellent opportunity for us to reflect on what the last four years have brought to the Afford Community, to celebrate all that we have accomplished – for our clients, their families and carers, and as a staff community of Affordians – and for this incredible momentum to motivate us onto even greater successes in our next chapter.
Since the launch of Staff Matters Issue 1 Afford has: • Welcomed the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which shifted our funding model to from state-government block funding in advance, to the national fee-for-service model of the NDIS. We supported over 2,000 clients through their first plan process and supported them to achieve their goals under the NDIS. 200th • Expanded from providing services in Greater Western Sydney to having a full presence along Australia’s Eastern Seaboard in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. AFFORD BECOMES A MULTI-STATE PROVIDER Afford has spent most of its rich 66 year history as a New South Wales based provider, that in recent years has predominately provided support to the Greater Western Sydney community. Following the full transition of Afford’s existing services to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Afford as an organisation had learnt an enormous amount about what it takes to be a successful provider under the NDIS. We had reinvigorated our business model and day-to-day operational practices to operate more efficiently under a fee-for-service approach, implemented sector-leading IT systems and sizably staffed up to meet demand. By 2018 it with our foundations and financial position so strong, it was clear that to continue to fulfil our mission – of providing quality and life changing support to as many people with disability as we are able to – we needed to think bigger. Without the limitations of each state being answerable to their own state-based system of disability funding and administration, Afford was able to embody one of the central tenants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, by becoming a national provider. Time was spent analysing the market areas that presented the greatest level of unmet demand and determining the timing best suited to ceasing opportunity under the NDIS’ geographical phased rollout, to ensure that Afford were on the ground and ready to provide services when each of the new areas rolled into the NDIS. This due diligence made it clear that South East Queensland would be first cab off the rank for Afford’s national expansion. 1 July 2018 marked the start of NDIS transition for the area we now know as our Queensland South District. Starting with our Southport Head Office as our flagship site, we replicated our district-driven model in Queensland South under the leadership of District Manager, Allan Sio, and building a team of frontline staff, Allied Health Professionals, Support Coordinators and Customer Care Managers. Afford’s transition to South East Queensland has been a huge success, we were met with a resoundingly positive reception from the local community and the large demand from NDIS participant saw our rapid expansion in the new district. From humble beginnings just 9 months ago, Afford now support over 160 Client Services clients and proudly operate services from sites in Beenleigh, Benowa, Southport, Coomera, Upper Coomera, Miami, Crestmead, Pimpama, Booval, Waterford, Logan Village and Regents Park. The next stop on our journey of interstate expansion was Melbourne, with a focus on supporting clients around the Bayside area through the launch of our Victorian Head Office in Frankston. The Melbourne District has experienced a similar establishment process to Queensland South, under the leadership of District Manager Katie Nuth. The expansion to Melbourne is one of significance not only to the communities who benefit from Afford’s presence as a new market entrant but also to Afford strategically, marking our presence along the Eastern Seaboard. In Victoria many large-scale partnerships have emerged such as with the Hawthorn Hawks and Yarra Trams Community Partnerships, which spells an exciting path ahead for the District. Thirdly, we circled back up to establish a second district in Queensland, our Queensland North District which provides support from Brisbane up to Noosa, capturing Caboolture and Maroochydore. This District sits within one of the latest NDIS rollout areas, having only entered the Scheme on 1 January 2019. The team is preparing to experience a wealth of growth during this initial year of NDIS Transition and our staff on the ground are working tirelessly to capture opportunity during their District’s transition to the NDIS. Afford’s interstate expansion cements Afford as a national leader within the disability sector and gives us a larger voice at the table when it comes to influencing the Australian disability landscape.

affordify MOVING TOWARDS A BIGGER FUTURE
The beginning of 2018 marked an end of an era and new beginnings, the move to our new National Head Office in Minchinbury NSW a bold fresh start for Afford. This was a symbolic and much needed move for our organisation into a space which gives us room to grow and continue to expand as we firmly settle in to the new era of disability supports under the NDIS. The open plan design, breakout meeting areas and hot desks reflect our organisational emphasis on collaboration communication and unity. We have taken inspiration from our logo and have incorporated bright colour and creative design throughout the office.

THE GROWTH OF THE AFFORD LIFESTYLE Since Staff Matters Issue 1, Afford has gone from operating 3 accommodation sites to having 37 group homes across the Eastern Seaboard. Confidently, Afford are Australia’s Group Home experts and you need only step into an Afford home to see why. The difference is the Afford Lifestyle. As a service provider, we are proud to offer more than the bricks and mortar that make a house, we create a multifaceted network of support for residents in a setting filled with the warm intricacies that make a house a home like fresh fruit on every kitchen bench. Accommodation support is one of the most holistic and completely life changing supports we are able to offer. We become an extension of residents’ families – there to share in the celebrations that come with life’s highs and to comfort and support during the lows. Our responsibility for our residents extends beyond just keeping the lights on and power running, and we are proud to ensure that residents are engaged in meaningful LAPs (Learning, Activities and Participation). We encourage residents to pursue their interests, not just activities that are near them, convenient for staff or that best fit the house roster – residents are empowered to truly embrace what it is that makes them individuals and we are proud to support our residents to do more of what they love, whatever that may be. You can be sure that there is always an Afford vehicle parked in the driveway and a Lifestyle Assistant ready to take our residents to where they would like to go and support them to get the most out of life. In Afford homes residents have choice, respect and can trust that they are in a safe and supportive environment. That’s the Afford Lifestyle.

Staff Matters EXPANDING INTO ALLIED HEALTH SERVICE PROVISION
When Staff Matters Issue 1 was released, Afford wasn’t even an Allied Health service provider. Today we have close to 30 clinicians across multiple disciplines including psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy and other specialist therapies, who come together to create Afford’s robust and energetic Allied Health Team. Afford’s expansion into this area was a conscious decision, to employ our own clinicians rather than accepting reliance on third-party providers. This adds to the whole of life approach Afford offers clients – a key point of difference for Afford in the marketplace. Afford’s Allied Health Team has been a runaway success as new business within Afford, which generates an average weekly revenue of $50,000. The demand for our Allied Health offering has been staggering and as soon as we’ve recruited a clinician, pressure from our waitlists already has us recruiting another. The mobile nature of our service offering sees our clinicians racing around our districts to provide empowering therapeutic supports for clients, and has birthed incredible good news stories of clients achieving life changing outcomes. Kristian is a client who had no verbal communication skills. An Afford Support Coordinator connected Kristian and his family with a speech therapist who he met with regularly for a year. It was truly a magnificent moment when Kristian said his first word “go, go, go” while waiting for his Group Home Lifestyle Assistant to take him for a walk. Afford supported Kristian to say his first word at 26 years old – an incredible achievement. “Couldn’t be any prouder of my son, Kristian! My profound appreciation to Mary St, Bligh Park house staff, the Allied Health team who provided exemplary strategies for Speech and now about to commence with his Sensory Diet. My utmost respect for the CEO for his unfailing support for both the clients and his staff.” - Jocelyn, Kristian’s mother. The introduction of an in-house Allied Health offering has seen not only amazing successes from individual clients, but the quality of our service delivery across Client Services and Afford Employment has markedly benefited from the guidance of our Afford practitioners. For example our Allied Health team have supported our Day Programs business to create spectacular and well-informed sensory spaces and develop sensory kits that encourage the continual development and enjoyment of clients. Similarly, the Social Skills Group at our Prestons ADE has been established which incorporates Lego Therapy. These sessions are very popular with our clients’ social and communication skills are really put to the test when they have to take on the roles of ‘Engineer’, ‘Supplier’ and ‘Builder’ and work cooperatively towards producing the model at the end of the 10 week program. Members of our Allied Health team are also now qualified SOS feeding therapists and can work with sites to develop specialised feeding plans to suit the needs of clients and create and implement feeding programs within a group or on an individual basis. Strategically, the establishment of Allied Health teams across all states has opened up Afford’s client base to a range of potential clients from different age groups, and particularly younger age groups, which we otherwise may not have had contact with. Based on our whole of life approach to service provision, this untapped cohort of clients has been able to access services that they would not have been able to through a standalone Allied Health offering. Absolutely incredible!
WINNING AWARDS We did it - we’re #1 Disability Care Provider in Australasia in 2018! Afford achieved this prestigious title as part of the Enablement Awards. This is a testament to the dedicated and passionate staff that we have as part of our community, the strong culture we have nurtured and the exceptional customer service we deliver to our clients each and every day.

EMERGENCE OF THE AFFORD WAY Culture is crucial to the success of Afford’s overall strategy. In the 4 years since the release of Staff Matters Issue 1 Afford has seen the emergence of a new, fresh, energised and enthusiastic Afford culture. Today at Afford we know that our exceptional quality support to our clients comes directly from our staff. We know we have the best staff in the sector and we invest to retain this talent. We have established a range of initiatives to support you and your family, to be a true Employer of Choice. We have nurtured the teams and tribes mentality through Staff Conferences, Buzz Nights and Customer Service Awards to ensure you are happy and stay well informed about what is happening at Afford through regular communication such as our weekly Staff Matters newsletter. Our Step Up Program also offers every staff member the chance to push the boundaries and explore both horizontal and vertical career progression within Afford. We now employ well over 1,700 employees and we will continue to grow in the years to come.
