On a Saturday afternoon, Paul attends his local church with his wife. He loves to watch movies and socialise with friends afterwards. Some days he goes for a drive along the roads at a national parks. Life has not always been this smooth, but Paul never gave up. Some years ago, Paul was involved in a motorbike accident that left his right arm paralysed. Since then, Paul found it challenging to find a job in his field of IT hardware as it required him to use both arms. So he took on a new study path and began training for AutoCAD design. Meanwhile he worked part-time as a market researcher on the telephones. With a zest for life and persistence to keep moving forward, Paul set off to find himself a job after seven years of unemployment. He came across Afford and met with our DES staff. He found Afford’s level of service to be exceptional.
Working with the Afford Liverpool DES staff, Paul identified his goals and skills. He wanted to continue working in the building industry as an AutoCAD draftsman because he had a passion for the industry and also had relevant training; a Certificate 3 in Detailed Drafting and a Diploma in Building Design. “Afford Liverpool are very persistent and helpful. They never gave up on me”, said Paul. Soon, Paul was interviewed by RJS Aluminium for a draftsman position. Paul attended the interview by himself and communicated his experiences and skills confidently and was offered the position. Now, Paul really enjoys his job as an AutoCAD draftsman. Well done and congratulations Paul!

We engage and maintain relationships with a large network of schools and workplaces within our community, to ensure that the progress you make is meaningful and lasting.
Wesley joined the afford SLES Program in penrith after his final year in high school with one goal on his mind, to one day work in the hospitality industry. With some trepidation about what life would bring after school, Wesley entered the program with a lot of passion but still needing some direction for how to reach his goals. “Wesley had a great energy that he could barely contain and it was wonderful helping him learn how to channel that energy into driving his own progress and strengthening his abilities.” Throughout his journey with Afford, Wesley has shown an eagerness to learn and get involved. He has taken part in all Afford training programs and has grown so much as a young man, learning new skills that will prepare him for life in the workforce. Wesley has succeeded in completing his Certificate in Barista skills at Nepean Community College and his Certificate II in Hospitality with Barrington Group Training. Wesley ‘s passion for the hospitality industry only grew as he was supported to further develop his interests and learn more about different types of jobs. For some hands-on experience, Wesley enjoyed work experience at Coles and Ratha’s Place Café to further enhance his customer service skills and good work habits. Wesley welcomed
the new experiences and was excited to interact with the wider community in a work environment. Wesley was very keen to start work and Afford SLES partnered with Blacktown DES to get the wheels in motion. Within a few short weeks of being with DES the opportunity arose for Wesley to utilize all that he had learnt throughout his time at SLES and show off his skillset, attending his first work trial at Murry’s Café Penrith. A natural talent, by the end of the trial Wesley had proven that he would be an asset to Murray’s Café and was offered the job. Wesley has now achieved his long term goal, working 2 days per week in Open employment at Murray’s Café. “One of Wesley’s personal goals was to learn to travel independently. Wesley was always very interested in geography and could give directions to just about anywhere in Sydney, so it was great to see him planning out his route for how he was going to get to his new job!” Wesley brought enthusiasm, kindness and a contagious energy to the Afford SLES team and is an inspirational trainee that has proved time and time again that he is capable of achieving all that he dreams and more.
