CARER CONNECTIONS Edition 40 - October 2021
CARERS WEEK EVENTS National Carers Week is celebrated between the 10th and 16th of October and is an opportunity to raise community awareness among Australians about the diversity of carers and their unique roles. Thanks to funding from Carers NSW Australia, our sites could host multiple events to celebrate our carers. Baulkham Hills Supported Accommodation carers came together for a delicious barbecue cooked by staff, followed by a sweet treat of cakes and fruit. “Parents and carers finally got to see their loved ones after four long months of lockdown. Diane told me she was happy to see Ricky and was impressed by his improvement. She had an amazing time seeing everyone from the house and enjoyed herself,” said Team Leader, Allison Jordan. For Bexley Day Program, this was the first opportunity for carers to get familiar with the new site since its relocation in June. “It was an excellent opportunity to have the parents and carers see the site and they thought it was awesome. I explained our intentions for the space and everyone is looking forward to seeing Bexley reach its full potential,” said Team Leader, Jarryd Klessens. Our Belmore and Campbelltown Day Programs also hosted fantastic events for their carers that had everyone smiling from ear to ear. In Queensland, our Customer Care Managers, Carolyn Johnston and Meagan Bartczak were invited to attend the Carer Friendly Business Awards hosted by Carers Queensland. “I connected with Charnea Dalgety from Carers Queensland and had invited her to the Afford Ipswich Open Day, where she met Meagan and the team. She invited Meagan and I to the awards ceremony which was an invitation-only event,” said Carolyn. The Carer Friendly Business Awards celebrate organisations that have gone above and beyond to implement carer-friendly employment practices. On behalf of everyone at Afford, we hope you enjoyed our carers events and we would like to acknowledge the strength you bring to every day.

MONSTER BURGERS Halloween is celebrated annually on October 31st so get ready to do the monster mash and celebrate with this spooky take on a classic burger. You can customise your burger by adding your favourite toppings and serve with fries or salad. INGREDIENTS: • 4 tasty cheese slices • 1 tbsp olive oil • 500g/4 premade mince patties • 4 burger buns • 1 iceberg lettuce • 1 tomato (thinly sliced) • 1 cup frozen peas • 2 tomatoes (thinly sliced) • sauce of choice • 4 cherry tomatoes • 8 black olives METHOD: 1. Prepare your burger fangs by placing the cheese slices on a cutting board and using a small knife to cut triangles along one edge of the slice. 2. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat and add your premade beef patties. Cook each side of the patties for at least 7 minutes or until patties are cooked through. 3. T op the burger bun bases with lettuce, beef patty, cheese slice and your sauce of choice then add bun top. 4. To create the eyes, slice one cherry tomato in half for each burger. 5. CARER CONNECTIONS Edition 40
CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROPERTY LISTINGS We have now made it easier than ever to join the Afford Lifestyle! Our website now features a new page where you can view all of our current vacancies across supported accommodation sites. “The idea came from wanting to make the process of locating Afford vacancies more streamlined. So, for me, it seemed logical to have all the vacancies on our website rather than externally to make it easier for potential clients,” said Accommodation Advisor for NSW, QLD & VIC, Allison Storjohann. The new property listing page is accessible through the supported accommodation homepage on the Afford website. Visitors can also view our properties’ 3D tours, making all of our essential information available in one location. Each property listing provides essential information, including vacancies, house features, general location and multiple photos. One of our standout homes in Deception Bay, Queensland, currently has two vacancies. The home has widened doorways, hallways, ramps and access to a wheelchair vehicle. It also has a wheelchair accessible bathroom and ‘wet room’ bathroom. It is conveniently located near the Deception Bay shopping centre, beachfront and parks. In Victoria, we currently have five vacancies in our prestigious home in Point Cook Gardens Estate. On a 651 sqm block, this home features a large master bedroom with an ensuite. The four other bedrooms each have built-in wardrobes and a shared bathroom. There is a beautiful patio area for relaxing outside and tending to the garden. We have many more vacancies across NSW, QLD and VIC so head to the new property listings webpage to view them and find a new home for your loved one.
