CARER CONNECTIONS Edition 35 - May 2021

MELBOURNE CARERS TASTE THE YARRA VALLEY Families and carers from all services in Victoria joined in on a fantastic journey to the Yarra Valley region. The day was organised as part of Afford’s Carers program. It was the perfect opportunity for a fun adventure to bring everyone together, discuss current services, new ideas, NDIS trends and the industry as a whole. Everyone was excited to visit the first stop, the Balgownie Winery, one of Victoria’s premier estates. There were plenty of laughs and vibrant conversation during the tasting, which flowed over into a delicious three-course lunch. “The highlight of the day was hearing the families provide direct feedback on how much Afford has had a positive impact on theirs and their loved ones’ lives,” said District Manager Victoria, Edward Boghikian. The fun didn’t stop there with the group, with visiting Yering Farm winery and orchard, to continue getting to know each other and share stories. “The atmosphere was vibrant and the landscape was simply stunning. There were lots of jokes and banter about how no one wanted to return home after such a terrific day!” said Edward. Overall this was an extremely successful event, with team leaders and district managers receiving overwhelming appreciation from our terrific families. We hope our carers felt special and proud to be a part of the Afford team. Afford love to organise unique carers events to show gratitude for the hard work our families and carers provide to their loved ones.

LEMONADE SCONES Spoil the women in your life with some homemade scones. INGREDIENTS: • Self-raising flour • 1 cup pure cream • 1 cup lemonade (sprite or 7-up) • Pinch of salt • Extra flour for dusting • Jam and cream to serve METHOD: 1. Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan force) and line tray with baking paper. 2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl with cream and lemonade and mix until flour is mostly combined, the dough should be soft and sticky. 3. Turn out onto a floured surface, and knead 3 - 5 times to bring the dough together, then gently pat into a disc shape. 4. Use a round cutter to cut dough into shape then, place it on the tray. If desired - brush the tops with milk. 5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden on top. Place on rack to cool. 6. Serve with the traditional topping of jam and cream, or mix it up with Nutella for a chocolate twist. NOTES: Lemonade scones cook slightly faster than traditional scones. For fluffier scones, don’t over knead the dough and press the cutter straight down then back up – no need to twist. Full recipe thanks to Women’s Weekly: https://bit.ly/3eMEHyh

CARER CONNECTIONS Edition 35

AFFORDIAN’S CELEBRATE MOTHERS DAY At Afford, we appreciate the incredible role that mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, caregivers and friends play in the lives of our loved ones. The second Sunday of May allows us to thank those women by celebrating their everyday contributions to our lives. Mother’s Day dates as far back as 1600’s England, where ‘Mothering Sunday’ was introduced during Lent to celebrate Mary, the mother of Jesus. It eventually grew to include all mothers, but Mother’s Day as we know it today wasn’t introduced to Australia until 1923 by Sydney woman Janet Hayden. She gave gifts to mothers she met in hospitals and campaigned for others to do the same. Her actions were noticed by the press, who soon coined the term Mother’s Day and as they say, the rest is history. This year staff and clients across the Afford community participated in a range of activities to commemorate Mother’s Day. Kristy from our Blacktown Day Program was learning new skills for arts and craft. She learnt different painting techniques using colouring pencils, sandpaper, splattering, and dripping. She then incorporated those techniques to make a Mother’s day card for her mother. Penrith residents Andrew and Daryl got crafty and made some artwork for their sister and Mum. Peter from Waterford Respite used his skills to make a different style of artwork, using different techniques to create two unique art pieces for his Mum. Affordian’s across all states did different projects for their family members to gift to on the special day. Whether you celebrated Mother’s Day in person or over Zoom this year, we hope you spoilt the important women you know and made them feel extra special.
