In celebration of another wonderful year, on 22 December Afford Staff attended the Christmas Cruise party around the Sydney Harbour. It was dancing and fun for all staff who attended with many enjoying getting to know their fellow colleagues from many of our different sites. Afford CEO, Steve Herald, delivered a speech during festivities which recapped another great and successful year for Afford. Steve also talked of the many achievements throughout the business. Some of the highlights included, Canley Vale getting past 100 clients, Recruitment hiring over 400 people, Marketing achieving over 4,000 Facebook likes, Pallets achieving the highest revenue ever of $7.5mil, Fundraising hit $1.3mil for the year, Grants bringing in $600K for the year and Accommodation growing to 84 residents. All who attended let out a big cheer for every team and everyones hard work throughout the year. To cap off the celebrations of the many achievements, Maureen Brown and Michelle Flynn thought a celebratory rap was in order, which was a fun and entertaining way to end festivities. A big thank you to everyone involved in organising such a great day and to all staff who attended and made it a blast. We look forward to celebrating even more successes next year!

Afford Support Disability League Afford is very excited to announce a recent partnership with the NSW Physical Disability Rugby League Association (NSWPDRLA) to help promote inclusivity and fairness in sports. Afford and the NSWPDRLA share many organisational synergies of promoting understanding of individual ability and sharing the message of active and healthy lifestyles. NSWPDRLA has a vision to give individuals of different levels of ability the opportunity to a play modified game of rugby league for a fun and fitness alternative. Afford CEO, Steve Herald, recently met with Shaun Spence from the West Tigers team (also sponsors) to confirm Afford’s sponsorship with the presentation of a cheque. Star players of the league, Afford clients, Marco Quinton and Marco Spanetti were also present at the presentation and super excited about Afford’s support of the league. We look forward to sharing many opportunities that this sponsorship will bring and wish all the players on the league every success on and off the field.

Respite Love to Have Fun Afford Respite has been moving from strength to strength and clients are enjoying the many person-centred activities on offer.

Recently, clients from St Marys Respite went for an outing to Colloray Beach, where they enjoyed some valuable down time in the sunny weather. Everyone had an absolute blast on the day and took some time to refresh and unwind with peers and supportive Afford staff. St Mary Respite clients also visited indoor ‘unreal mini golf’ in Penrith. It was a great outing where clients could develop hand-eye coordination skills but also relax with friends. Respite is a much valued Afford service for both Afford clients and their careers and families. At Afford, we focus on creating environments that provide opportunities to learn but also offer clients new life experience that align with their interests and personal goals.

Tayla Driving Her Goals Afford has a whole-of-life approach to disability supports and we are privileged to be part of our clients’ journeys towards personal development and happiness. When Taylah First came to Afford, she entered the TTW / SLES Program with a Learners Permit and a goal to seek out a Driving school to get her on the road. Taylah and Trainer, Sharon Figl, began working together to research driving schools in the local area and created a list of options. Taylah then took the information home and, with her family, decided on the driving school that was right for her. Once the decision was made, Taylah commenced her driving lessons. In the beginning, Taylah was very nervous and would often come to TTW and share what she had learnt in her lesson with her Trainer and express that she found it daunting when having to turn corners. However, these initial reservations did dampen Taylah’s spirits. Week by week her confidence grew and her driving skills improved. On 7 December, Taylah had a driving lesson and had organised for the lesson to commence from TTW. She was super excited to introduce Sharon to her driving instructor and show off her driving skills as she left the carpark. Feedback from the instructor was excellent, stating that Taylah has mastered reverse parking and that he feels very safe in the passenger seat with Taylah behind the wheel. Taylah still has a few more hours to complete in her log book, but is well on her way to obtaining her drivers permit. Enjoy cruising, Taylah!
