The recent Teams, Tribes and Leadership conference at the Gold Coast, once again reinforced the importance of building and maintaining the Afford Culture that has been built over the past three years. Culture is crucial to the success of Afford’s overall strategy. The past three years has seen the setting of foundations and the emergence of our new culture. We have morphed from a staid, employee centred, bureaucratic culture to the beginnings of a commercial, flat, customer-centred culture. To fully achieve the right culture will take another year or two as we juggle significant organisational and market changes with our own journey of cultural change. Conversely, our cultural change is what will dictate our success in traversing the changing market and where we land in the years to come, the biggest factor in the coming years being our ability to cope with change. Beyond this horizon we need the right culture to succeed as a Multi-Site Service Provider, and we are already well on our way to this. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3.

It’s a Wrap, Partnership Grant! Afford’s Supported Employees use their unique skills to pack, label and pack products for many of Australia’s top Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies with timeliness and accuracy.
Thanks to a generous Community Building Partnerships Grant, Supported Employees at our Ingleburn Disability Enterprise (ADE) will be able to up-the-ante to pack products more easily with the purchase of a new semi-automatic pallet wrapper which will create a more productive and efficient working process. The new pallet wrapper takes out the stress when wrapping large pallets as it can be customised to wrap oversized items easily. The addition of the new pallet wrapper also presents employees with up-skilling opportunities where they can learn more about how the pallet wrapper works and how to load and operate the new equipment. The introduction of the new pallet wrapper has already improved the timeliness of the production line and has improved the method of wrapping pallets by eliminating the amount of hand wrapping previously required to wrap large items.

Throughout the conference, the team spirit and competitive drive that makes us a leader in the industry was evident. Day two of the conference had teams focusing on their individual business plans and sharing their ideas and goals for future growth. The teams really got into the team spirit coming up with individual tribe names and costumes to encourage bonding and a unified team. The creativity of the teams set the pace for the day with team names Afford Watch, Victorious Secret and the Homies really getting into the spirit of the activity. It was a successful conference which forged teams and built on business plans which will continue to set us apart as a market leader in the industry.

Afford has been recognised as a finalist in the 2018 Australian Small Business Champion Awards! This is a tremendous achievement. The Australian Small Business Champion Awards is a prestigious and comprehensive program that supports and recognises small businesses across Australia. The awards seek to recognise the hard work that business owners contribute to the local community in generating employment for millions of Australians, as well as their contribution to the Australian economy. Afford is honoured to be a finalist in these highly respected awards and we are proud of the dedication of our Afford community that has helped us be recognised by the community as a leader in the disability sector. Along with the other award finalists, Afford will be subject to a rigorous judging process which includes the involvement of around thirty individuals from different industries who review the entries to determine the category winners. Judges come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including government representatives, association representatives, university lecturers, accountants, marketers, shopping centre representatives and small business people. A full list of finalists will be published on the Champions website on 26 March and the winners of the 2018 Champion Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony, themed with an ‘Oscars’ atmosphere, at The Star Event Centre on Saturday, 21 April 2018.
