Afford has announced its merge with WALCA (Wellness and Leisure Centre for Adults) in Bexley and recently held an induction day for the WALCA staff transitioning to the Afford community. The induction covered many and varied topics including an overview of Afford’s culture and our expectations for staff and exceptional service to clients. Afford’s strict adherence to policies and procedures was also discussed. Transitioning staff were also introduced to the many reasons why Afford is considered an Employer of Choice. Incentives such as nicotine replacement therapy, the Fitness Passport, and enjoyable staff social gatherings such as Buzz Nights were also covered.

Some of the more practical topics such as processes for complaint handling, incident reporting, medication administration, NDIS funding supports and more were also detailed to ensure all participants were aware of and understand all that Afford staff undertake to ensure the best service to clients. Speakers throughout the day included Afford CEO, Steven Herald and other key Afford representatives including Rosie Barletta, Stephanie Forsyth, Casey Hailes and Emma Hunter. After a jam-packed day of information, staff were very excited about being part of Afford and what the future holds. They engaged enthusiastically, asked questions and were receptive of the information provided to them. They all understood that there are people that can help at any time if they need support or advice. Some of the feedback was that they truly feel that management is approachable. Participants really enjoyed seeing some of the videos of clients attending the Afford Gala Ball and enjoying activities and programs at Cherrywoood Hub. We look forward to welcoming new faces to the Afford community and a bright future with new clients transitioning to Afford.

Windsor Celebrates Family When you join the Afford community, you become one of the family, and Afford Windsor Lifestyle Centre always promote the idea of family among clients and staff and creating a supportive environment to let abilities soar! Windsor Lifestyle Centre staff believe that group activities provide positive social interaction and truly promote this sense of family. Clients are proud to identify as “Windsor clients” and everyone works together as a family unit during group activities which is when most clients excel in social interaction, communication and positive attitudes towards each other. Whether they are travelling together in the Afford van, visiting parks, playgrounds or simply at the centre enjoying activities together, the team at Windsor Lifestyle Centre encourage this ‘family’ bond. Great work team Windsor!

Kylie Works With a Smile

Kylie Hawkins is a client at Kings Park Lifestyle Centre who has wanted to participate in work experience to one day find a job that suits her interests and unique abilities. In November last year, Kylie finally received funding to begin her search for work. Afford was able to connect Kylie with the team at the Minchinbury ADE for work experience. Kylie performed so well on her first day by packing 3,024 toothbrushes and caps and she loved the experience! Kylie attends work experience every Wednesday with her 1-1 support staff at the factory. She really enjoys it and is working towards one day being able to attend work on her own. Further funding has allowed Kylie to continue work experience and work towards finding and keeping a job. Afford is supporting her to achieve her goals. Now, Kylie is working in the factory - on her own - for two days a week. The smile on her face says it all. Well done Kylie, we wish you the very best of luck!

Afford Minchinbury Factory Move Into Bigger & Better Site It has been an exciting few weeks for the Supported Employees at Afford’s Minchinbury Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE). Over the past weeks, equipment and jobs have been moved across the road to the new factory with everyone getting ready to start work in their new factory environment. This week, on the 16th of April, Supported Employees could officially begin working out of the new factory site! Staff and employees are still settling in to their new surrounds, but are eagerly looking forward to hosting their first ‘Welcome to our new Minchinbury Factory Site’ Open BBQ to celebrate their move into the new site. Afford Supported Employees are loving their new site, with many describing the new factory as being ‘BIGGER and BETTER!’ The new factory opens up opportunites for our Emplyees to learn new skills and take part in new projects, like Wesley who was excited to train this week on a new machine. The extra space and bigger cleanroom and extended bonded area, will open up amazing new opportunites for more work. We look forward to sharing many great achievements and celebrations with the Minchinbury ADE team.
