RENEWED & REFRESHED EDITION

GALA BALL A DREAMY WONDERLAND In This Issue More than 800 Afford clients, their families and carers, staff and VIPs jumped down the rabbit hole for this year’s Afford in Wonderland themed Gala Ball at Penrith.

1

Held at Penrith Panthers Marquee the Afford in Wonderland Gala Ball transported attendees into a world of whimsy and magic with decorative features such as a full sized White Rabbit, oversized pocket watch, pink flamingos, mushrooms and more.

2

The Gala Ball has been a highly anticipated and well attended event for the past three years now and still remains the only event of its kind in the disability sector that is staged purely as an opportunity for people with disability to celebrate in style, with family, carers and friends.

3

Thanks to Afford’s Project Princess initiative, attendees were dressed in stunning formal wear and gowns generously donated by the community and general public and really looked the part as they walked down the red carpet. Some guests wow-ed the crowds by arriving in fancy cars!

We loved that some attendees threw themselves right into the theme by dressing as Alice in Wonderland, The Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledee and Tweedledum and more! There were some amazing performances on the night, a duet by Warren and Ricky Nifo from The Voice, as well as an Alice in Wonderland dance performance by You Can Dance dance school. Clients danced the night away and loved taking photos with our Facebook frame and in front of the many decorative Alice in Wonderland features and the flower wall. Big thanks to the dedicated staff that coordinated this wonderful event, as well as the many Afford supporters, including major sponsors NAB and Livingstone, who made this Gala Ball possible. Thank you to all attendees, including our Afford Board members, staff and, of course, our wonderful clients. The icing on the Alice in Wonderland cake was a sensational finale to a memorable evening in Wonderland!

CANLEY VALE TAKING ACTION

SOMETHING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT ME? I’m actually a dragon with a horde of gold doubloons.

Well done to Alison Da Silva and Ziad Jumah from Canley Vale Day Program who this week literally saved a life. The duo jumped into action with a choking client. Following procedures to the letter, Alison and Ziad went through the processes from red alerting, completing first aid, calling an ambulance, and followed through with comforting the client after the incident. Their actions were first class and prevented a crisis. Great work Alison and Ziad for your quick thinking and detailed knowledge of the process in assisting a client.

Staff Matters GALA BALL A DREAMY WONDERLAND CONT.

ADES JOIN THE RENEW & REFRESH MOVEMENT It’s not only our Day Programs that are taking on the renew and refresh challenge, our Minchinbury ADE also had a refresh which will help attract more customers and improve efficiencies. The factory floor has recently been improved in layout and design to optimise the factory so that it is a cleaner and more visually appealing environment. As we move towards packaging more food stuffs and therapeutic goods, we need to ensure that we create a factory environment that is productive, clean, efficient and organised to showcase to potential customers during walk arounds, as well as for the benefit of our Supported Employees. It is important for our culture that Supported Employees love their work environment. We want the factory to feel as vibrant and appealing as the rest of our sites. Looking into the future we will also be adding colour to the beams, installing environmentally friendly lighting and adding some graphics to the walls. Adding in digital notice boards is also another feature we are looking at rolling out across all our factories. We look forward to bringing you more good news from the factory floor about how the improvements have enhanced the work flow at Minchinbury and some of the new customers that join Afford.

GROWN FROM THE HEART Steve was super surprised and so grateful to receive a wonderful gift from Cameron from Glenn Alpine Group Home. Delivered to his office, Steve received a box filled with lettuce, shallots, herbs and more from Cameron, along with a personalised message saying “To Steve, I hope you enjoy. Love Cameron” and some lovely photos of Cameron and his friends with their garden. A touching gift and one that truly showcases the strength and closeness of the Afford community. Thanks Cameron you made Steve’s day!
