CARING ABOUT OUR STAFF

AFFORD STAFF SAVE A LIFE Afford Staff work hard in caring for others every day, but this week, two of our incredible staff saved a life. Guildford Lifestyle Assistants, Darnyl Timms and Daniya Alshaik, heroically saved a 14-month-old baby girl from choking while on the train this week during community access. In a true embodiment of the Afford Way, they jumped into action when the frantic mother screamed that her baby was non-responsive, using their First Aid training and quick thinking to save a life. We are all extremely proud of Darnyl and Daniya and commend them for their quick-thinking and heroism. The above and beyond efforts of our staff are always noticed and our Chairman, Ross Fowler, shares the below message on behalf of the Afford Board of Directors:

Afford’s Got Talent, Yes We Do! Welcome New Appointments

“Dear All, The organisation we all work for is dynamic, evolving and growing. Like every business Afford’s greatest asset are the people who work in the organisation. I know I speak for all of my fellow Directors when I say we are immensely proud of our businesses and the services it delivers to a myriad of people, sometimes in very trying circumstances.

We all face challenges and problems and Afford is no exception, so it was very pleasing to learn of the excellent result achieved by two of our Lifestyle Assistants, Darnyl and Daniya, in saving a toddler’s life. Their quick action and their training were critical in this wonderful outcome. Thank you to Daniya and Darnyl, but also thank you, every one of you, for delivering great outcomes to the community you serve. Ross Fowler, Chairman For and on behalf of the Board of Afford”

PLATINUM PLACEMENT AT GOLD COAST DISABILITY EXPO Afford made yet another huge splash on the Gold Coast last weekend with Customer Care Staff from NSW and QLD attending the long anticipated Gold Coast Disability Expo at the Gold Coast Event Centre in Bundall. Afford attended as a Platinum Sponsor, with over 100+ providers at the expo; Platinum Sponsorship gives us the premium spot on the floor and maximises our branding. Staff were blown away at the number of enquiries received, with everyone wanting to visit our amazing booth. Our booth this year had an Afford prize wheel, airbrushed tattooist, Therapy Dog, Mia – in her Afford coast of course! – and an iPad Giveaway. A strong team of 12 Afford staff manned the stall and had the opportunity to talk about Afford services with the 1,500 people who attended the free expo over the two days. Some of those attendees even took times out of their days after the expo to share their compliments, like carer, Christine, who said: “YOU WIN 1st PRIZE! I went around every aisle and looked at everything at the expo. You guys at the stand win in my opinion because you had the double stall, best position, and HAPPY faces. You showed strength in numbers of your team, and it looked energised. The tattooist was great... something happening, something to look at and a real ice breaker for the looker-oners. The activity of Mia the gorgeous little dog and client Josh as the proudest representative were the icing on the cake... who wouldn't want a bit of that? So well done!!! CONGRATULATIONS, you deserve Top Spot. It was an awesome display of who you are and what you represent.” It is excellent to see Afford being represented so strongly in our new markets, and we are sure that the growth in our QLD South district will continue to soar as a result.

Staff Matters AFFORD’S GOT TALENT, YES WE DO!

Who’s Got Talent? Afford’s Got Talent! It was another sensational showcase of amazing performances at the annual Afford’s Got Talent event! Now in its 5th year, the Afford’s Got Talent event has become a true expression of creative abilities and a celebration of individuals achieving their goals. This event is about encouraging every person, of every ability to get up and have a go. This year was yet another year of truly captivating performances, where the talent shines bright! Afford’s Got Talent is an industry event unique to Afford and we’re so excited to offer this event purely for the enjoyment of our clients, their families and carers. For months leading up to the event staff support our clients, supported employees, residents and SLES trainees to learn lyrics and perfect dance moves so that they can proudly deliver sensational group and individual performances for Afford’s Got Talent. Performers from across our Day Programs, ADEs, SLES programs and Group Homes took to the stage at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith to showcase their talents, with the stage an explosion of creative expression. Costumes, makeup and performances are created and coordinated between our staff and clients so that each performance reflects the personal interests of everyone involved. With such a variety of performances, the stage was always brimming with colour, movement and, of course, smiles! Well-rehearsed and choreographed routines were supported in a spectacular showcase for the audience filled with family and friends. It was a memorable moment for performers who got to enjoy their time in the spotlight, an opportunity that most only get through Afford. There was lots of toe tapping and singing along, with performances including many musical favourites such as ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ (performed by the Far West Accommodation Choir), ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (performed by SLES Preston trainee, Connor), ‘Agadoo’ (performed by Cherrywood Day Program), ‘Shake it Off’ (performed by Oran Park Day Program) and many, many more. We are truly privileged to support our clients in developing their skills and confidence to express themselves creatively through dance and song. Afford’s Got Talent is always a very successful and fun event that create memories for clients that they will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you to all who attended!

We would like to congratulate the following Affordian on their new appointment: • Wayne Adamson - District Manager, Far West
