CARING ABOUT OUR STAFF
AFFORD SUPPORTS HEROES WITH ABILITIES Afford is dedicated to supporting inclusiveness and creating opportunities for people of all abilities across Australia. We are always looking for new opportunities to partner with local organisations to create a more inclusive community. Heroes With Abilities was founded by George Tonna and Marco Quintao. Living with Cerebral Palsy, George wanted to create opportunities for individuals to feel safe and supported to get involved in sport. Afford has partnered with Heroes With Abilities to launch a new, modified competition of touch football, where people with any disability are encouraged to learn new skills and have a go; working towards a final competition where the reigning team wins the Afford Shield. Heroes With Abilities is an initiative that is available in Sydney and is inclusive to all individuals, no matter their disability. People living with intellectual disability, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, physical and other disability are welcome to join and participate.

The Afford Way - Service That Delights! Upcoming Events Selfies of the Week Afford Trivia Answer
Players from Afford Day Programs from across Sydney including Windsor, Cherrywood, Oran Park, Canley Vale, Campbelltown, Jamisontown, Ashfield and others will develop their skills in ball passing, balance, kicking, playing as a team and of course, having fun! The program kicked off on the 28th of June 2019 and will run for 10 weeks, where players attend one hour training sessions at Peter Miller Park in Casula. Teams will be placed in pools to play against each other, and the top two teams will then go into the final to become reigning champions and be awarded the Heroes With Abilities Afford Shield! Afford's partnership with Heroes With Abilities is another way in which we go above and beyond traditional service offerings to give individuals opportunities to realise their dreams and meaningfully participate in activities they enjoy.

Staff Matters DES GRANTING REFUGEE SUPPORT Afford are grateful for the invaluable support and funds we receive through funding grants, which are important in providing additional services for our sites and our clients. Recently, Afford’s Fairfield, Liverpool and Bankstown DES sites received grant funding from the Department of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, 2019, to provide venue and supports to local refugees, through interactive social groups and information sessions. Many of our Employment Consultants are from a range of diverse cultural backgrounds and have relocated to Australia from their homeland, meaning they understand the experience and difficulties of moving to a foreign country. Layla Naji is one of these staff members and was excited to work with Toni Preston from our Grants team on the application for the Fostering Integration Grant to help empowering refugees with a disability, to start living their lives to the fullest potential. Our DES sites are passionate about helping those less fortunate, particularly refugees who may not have the same opportunities that we have in everyday life. Refugees involved in the program are not necessarily Afford job seekers, but a part of a bigger picture in spreading the word on how we focus on giving back to the community. In celebration of receiving the funding, DES staff members, Anna, Aida and Ximena took a group of roughly 20 people on a cruise to the VIVID Lights Festival. It was a night of celebration, cultural dance and fun. The group had such a noticeably great time that Captain even mentioned he would have them on his cruise any night, as they added a world of colour through their vibe and energy.
The group also had the opportunity to attend a women’s conference called ‘Inspiring Change’, which was held by the Community Migrant Resource Centre and largely centred on Passion, Purpose and People. The day was very well received by the 24 refugee women who attended with one of the ladies commenting to Layla Naji: “Thank you for taking me out today; you brought me to life today. It is the first time since arriving in Australia that someone treated me like a human being” – Entisar, Syrian Refugee Afford is so appreciative of the support received through community grant funding. These valuable funds allow us to ensure exceptional experiences across our sites each and every day.
