Staff Matters MARCH 19, ISSUE 301 | WEEK 38
FUN THE AFFORD WAY-SA MANAGERS CONFERENCE Fun the Afford Way, was the theme of the latest management conference and with the amazing ocean views in Glenelg, SA. Affordians had a great time networking with teams from all over Australia.
This was the first bi-annual management conference where all states were able to come together since COVID. With Glenelg being one of our key locations for our interstate expansion, it was the perfect opportunity to explore the local area. Teams made their way to the city of churches for an inspiring and motivating two days. This conference’s approach was different from others, with the critical element being on ‘’fun’’. With everyone overcoming some challenging times in 2020, it was essential that our teams had an excellent time and that the information was light and informative. Of course, it was still necessary to highlight why we do what we do, with a fantastic opening presentation from CEO, Steven Herald, emphasising the importance of our vision, mission, culture and the Afford Way. These conferences are key to the Afford Way keeping our staff updated, connected and involved with what is happening within our organisation. They also provide a forum to network and brainstorm new and exciting ideas for our businesses. They are also a fantastic way to get to know our interstate teams and create stronger connections within our organisation. Presentations from National Executive Manager - Human Resources, Melanie Lugg, refreshed us on the Employer of Choice initiatives that Afford offers to our staff. We were also treated to a refreshing presentation from Clinical Psychologist and Team Leader – Allied Health QLD, Karina Johnston, which taught us how to deal with stress and anxiety through simple breathing techniques.

FUN THE AFFORD WAYSA MANAGERS CONFERENCE CONT. Staff were also lucky to witness the sheer brilliance of Peter Richie, who was the first McDonalds Australia employee, CEO for 25 years and Chairman for 10 years. He helped grow McDonalds to 500 sites in his time and is an inspirational businessman. In Peter’s words, success doesn’t happen overnight! “A huge, special thanks to Cristina Alvarez and her team for putting together such a fabulous conference! It was also a chance to thank everyone for the achievements of the past year under extraordinary circumstances. I tried to make the conference light and inspirational, and I think Pete Ritchie, in particular, helped keep it that way,” said CEO, Steven Herald.
Wots On! Affordian’s Continue the Team and Tribe Vibes
A highlight of the conference was witnessing the incredible magical talent of Dom Chambers, the magician and the scavenger hunt team-building activity held in Glenelg.

AFFORDIAN’S CONTINUE THE TEAM AND TRIBE VIBES
WOTS ON!
The team tribe vibes continued into the weekend following the management conference, with some staff members opting to extend their stay in Adelaide to explore and enjoy some free time.
MARCH 2021
The management conference ended on Friday afternoon, with most staff members jumping on a plane and returning home. Those who chose to stay were relaxing in the crystal-clear waters of Glenelg beach and soaking up the sun at the Moseley Beach Club. Friday night offered the perfect opportunity for a night in after as everyone gathered together for a muchneeded movie night.
MARCH 15-21: NEURODIVERSITY CELEBRATION WEEK The campaign aims to change negative perceptions about autism and learning differences. MARCH 15-21: HARMONY WEEK Celebrate our cultural diversity by living the Harmony Week message everyone belongs in your workplace, community, school, sporting group, local councils and state governments. MARCH 21: WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics or health. MARCH 26: WORLD PURPLE DAY Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide.
During the weekend, staff got to experience one of Adelaide’s finest wineries, which is what the state is well known for (other than churches!) Team members from multiple departments headed off a day trip to Hugh Hamilton Wines. Located in McLaren Vale, Hugh Hamilton Wines is a family-owned business that has been around for years. The Hamilton family planted the first vineyards at Glenelg in 1837 and made the first wine in the colony of South Australia. Attendees were immersed in the beautiful winery surrounded by hundredyear-old barrels and acres of greenery! Indulging in decadent wines and delicious breads with oil and dukkha, it was an experience to remember. Cruising around in one of Afford’s signature branded vehicles, the team got to experience the sites around Adelaide.
