AFFORDIAN’S BRING A CAN-DO ATTITUDE
Recently our Executive team were invited to a secret team building day with the destination being success! The idea was from Acting CEO, Joy Kumar, who wanted to bring together the Executive team and showcase just what they can achieve together. Team members were emailed three clues over a week, giving them hints on what the team building day would involve. Everyone was extremely excited to discover what was in store for them. The theme was “a can-do attitude” and each clue hinted the day’s activities. Executive staff met at Afford’s National Head Office in Minchinbury NSW and were surprised with a party bus to pick them up and get the good vibes started on the way to their destination. The team headed to Minto Indoor Sports Centre in South West Sydney and were told nothing other than to “have a ball,” bring their sportswear, a towel and a spare change of clothes. Upon arrival, everyone soon discovered that they would be versing each other in a game of wheelchair basketball! The idea was to challenge our Executive team and put into perspective some of the difficulties our clients experience every day. In teams of two, team Tiara and team Aggressive versed each other for the win. It was a very competitive game finishing with a draw at full time and going into a shootout. “The day was to challenge our Executive team, encouraging them to discover new things about themselves and walk/ wheel in mine and our client’s shoes. It was also about learning gratitude that they could walk out and resume their normal lives whilst they were in a wheelchair during the game. The game helped the Exec Team showcase their essential leadership skills of teamwork, resilience, healthy competition and empathy whilst having fun along the way,” said Acting CEO, Joy Kumar. Congratulations to team Aggressive who took out the winning title! There were also team play prizes given, with the most valuable player awarded to National Executive Manager - Human Resources, Melanie Lugg and best and fairest player awarded to National Accommodation Advisor, Kirstin Healey. The team loved the wheelchair basketball so much that some staff want to do the event again for a buzz night. Afterwards, everyone relaxed with some lunch and a game of celebrity heads. “I surprised myself as to how much I enjoyed the day as I’m normally not a sporty person. The most challenging part was using the wheelchair. Manoeuvring it was more complicated than I first thought. Overall the day was unexpected. However, it was the most fun I’d ever had doing sports and I would do it again, but team Tiara will win next time! Hint-hint Kira,” said National Marketing, Events, Grants & Fundraising Manager, Cristina Alvarez. Well done to our Executive team!
