Staff Matters APRIL 30, ISSUE 307 | WEEK 44
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW COO! It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of our new Chief Operating Officer – Amira Salama!
Amira joined Afford in April 2015 and absolutely embodies Afford’s culture and values. “Afford is like a family. We care about our clients and our colleagues. It’s more than a place to work,” said Amira. Amira has worked various roles within Afford, having experience in frontline roles as a Lifestyle Assistant, a Vocational Training Officer and Market Area Coordinator, which has given her a wealth of practical experience. Amira also has experience as a Team Leader, then progressed to District Manager, State Manager NSW for Day Programs and then became our National Executive Manager for Day Programs. Prior to working at Afford, Amira studied a Cert IV, a Diploma in Disability Services and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She has since been in the sector for over ten years. “Amira is one of the hardest working people in Afford. I have no doubt she will excel in this new adventure, just like she has in every other role. With all of your support, Amira will take Afford to another level. Please join me in congratulating her,” said Acting CEO, Joy Kumar. Our Acting CEO, Joy Kumar will be taking a leave of absence, bringing changes for reporting lines. The changes that affect reporting within some teams are as follows: 1. Accommodation & Respite now report to the COO 2. Ops Finance will now report to Finance and eventually to the new CFO Amira is excited to have commenced her new role as of the 26th of April, “I am looking forward to team focused culture, more opportunities to grow Afford and also learn and grow my skills. Afford always will be unbeatable, simply because our hearts are in the right place, our main focus is our clients,” said Amira.

FRONTLINE CONFERENCE FRIENDZY Last Friday, our frontline staff participated in a client services conference across all states. Affordians were connected via Zoom, providing attendees with the opportunity to network across multiple teams and get motivated for the exciting year ahead.
We opened this year in a ‘friendzy’ of entertainment with the launch of our new intranet, Afford Central. The stage was set and ready with Marketing Manager, Michelle Flynn exploding onto the stage with excitement. The F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song blasted over the speakers and the curtains opened to reveal an Afford Central lounge based on the Central Perk Café from the popular TV show. Following the Afford Central announcement, Executive Manager Day Programs NSW & VIC, Wayne Adamson, officially opened the conference with a warm welcome. Morning presentations kicked off with our Acting CEO, Joy Kumar providing an update on the future of Afford, reassuring that it is business as usual. Dave Hollier from Bushbred gave an inspiring presentation about his animal therapy program and how Afford clients are thriving under this program. After morning tea, attendees were treated to informative presentations on red alert training and updates from human resources. Following afternoon tea, we had a panel of executives take questions from attendees around the room and interstate. It was the perfect opportunity to raise ideas and suggestions for keeping us an employer of choice and a leading disability service provider. The panel consisted of Amira Salama, Wayne Adamson, Kym Mafi, Melanie Lugg, Joy Kumar and Allan Sio. It was a day full of learning and networking, with Affordians being empowered to inspire their teams.
