SUPPORTED SUPERSTARS LEADING THE WAY Recently our executive team joined our dedicated supported employees working in Afford’s Minchinbury ADE! The activity was inspired by Acting CEO, Joy Kumar’s recent ADE site tour. It was a great follow-up activity after the success of the executive wheelchair basketball team-building day last month. The recent Afford Employment conference highlighted that a trip to our five ADEs was due. “Joy expressed an interest in visiting our ADE sites, so we started with Marrickville ADE. It was an exciting day and the Marrickville staff members were thrilled to have Joy visit their ADE. They treated Joy like a rockstar,” said National Executive Manager - Commercial services, Gordon Griff. The timing was perfect as Joy was able to take part in their employee of the month awards. The site tour continued throughout the day with visits to Ingleburn ADE, followed by our pallet business in Minto and Preston’s ADE. emp

The following day the ‘work experience’ activity at Minchinbury ADE was a huge success, with the executive team excited to work alongside and learn from our supported employee experts! “The last time our senior team members and client service staff were working on the floor was the Christmas Woolworths job we had in 2019. For some, this was the first time they experienced working in our factories,” said Gordon. Not only did our executive team enjoy the experience, but so did our supported employees as they were able to take charge and show our executive team what to do. One comment to note came from a supported employee, Peter Evans. Peter was assisting our executive team and mentioned to the team, “It’s okay, you only have to do your best, you won’t get in trouble.”

“What I love about that comment is that our supported employees can share encouragement in a leadership role from their learned experience in our factories. It’s great to know they feel supported,” said Gordon.

This will assist our executive team in staying connected and understanding other departments across our business. “The dedication and work ethic of our supported employees absolutely blew me away. They take so much pride in their work and it served as an inspiration for our executive team. It reminded me to hold my executive team accountable for their work, so that fairness and hard work trickles down to every staff member. After all, the executive team are here to serve the staff and clients of Afford. This activity was a great opportunity for the executive team to understand working from the perspective of our supported employees,” said Acting CEO, Joy Kumar.

STRATEGICALLY PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE! Last week, Afford’s board members and executive team attended a strategic planning weekend held in the beachfront suburb of Glenelg in Adelaide, South Australia. The strategic weekend is about planning and focusing on Afford’s priorities, resources and goals. It also ensures that Afford’s partners, stakeholders and employees are working toward the same objectives. It is essential to strengthening operations and sets a target around intended outcomes for Afford’s future progression. Upon arriving in Adelaide, attendees checked into the Stamford Grand Hotel, before heading to The Promenade Restaurant for dinner, enjoying the spectacular views of Glenelg beach while dining and networking. On Friday morning, the team embarked on an exciting day touring our Adelaide sites, including: • Mawson Lakes & Northgate Group Homes • Holden Hill & Morphett Vale Day Programs

Throughout the planning day on Saturday our executives team presented to the board and had discussions on essential topics, covering group rate changes for day programs, updates on expansion, changes and challenges for supported employment and SIL approvals. “The board enjoyed having an open forum with the executives to discuss the challenges Afford may face and working through them together,” said National Marketing, Events, Grants & Fundraising Manager, Cristina Alvarez. Guest speaker John Walsh delivered an informative presentation on the possible changes to the NDIS over the coming years and the implications for Afford. John Walsh is a champion for change in Australia’s disability space. His own experiences were a result of his intense passion for improving outcomes for people with disability. When John was in his early twenties, he was involved in a rugby league accident resulting in him becoming a quadriplegic. John has helped shape the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (NDIS) and is a leader for the disability support system. With our goals aligned, Afford’s future shines bright with business as usual.
