AFFORD ADELAIDE EXPO EXTRAVAGANZA
Afford is proud to have facilitated its first very own Disability Expo in Adelaide, which was a huge success. The customer care team brought their visions to life last Thursday, 13th May, at The Lights Community and Sports Centre, with a massive turnout on the day. It was an excellent opportunity for networking with locals and other service providers, approximately 300 attended in the first hour, with numbers building throughout the day. “Overall, I would say that the event was a success and it was a day of good vibes. We were centre stage and able to meet and welcome people from the minute they came in,” said Customer Care Manager South Australia, Emari Harry. With over 60 stallholders, it was also a fantastic way for people to learn more about NDIS supports & services whilst also expanding our brand awareness in Adelaide. Demonstrating their pride for Afford, staff from all over Australia attended the expo and got involved on the day. There were giveaways, a face painter and a balloon maker, further adding to the positive atmosphere. “The response not only from the public but from all of the 60 providers that attended was incredibly positive. They were appreciative to Afford for hosting this event so that they could exhibit and market available support services to the community,” said National Manager of Customer Care, Sulett Van Wyk. The expo is an excellent example of what Affordians can achieve through collaboration and having the determination to make our dreams a reality. “It was such a huge goal and dream since December to pull this off and we would never have been able to do so without the huge team effort and the support behind us. Thank you, everyone, for the support and allowing us to put on the first ever Afford expo,” said Customer Care Manager Adelaide, Brenton Munzer. The event brought the community together and assisted individuals looking to find more information about supports and services. Bring on the Adelaide Disability Expo 2022!

SUPPORT OUR CLIENTS WITH GETAWAYS Afford Getaways provides the opportunity to support our clients in unique adventures across Australia.
Lifestyle Assistant, Melissa Stuart, recently travelled with Lisa from our Bluebird Supported Accommodation to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, where they stayed for two nights and toured the local sites. The day at the Zoo was a wild adventure with Lisa seeing both exotic and endangered animals and getting to explore the Zoo via an electric cart to make the most of her time there. “The whole trip, Lisa was brighteyed and bushy tailed and it was just absolutely great. The staff at the Zoo were very accommodating and Lisa had an amazing day,” said Melissa. Throughout the day, Joshua, our videographer, captured many of Lisa’s favourite moments, which can be viewed in a highlight reel on our YouTube Channel http://bit.ly/affordyoutube. On their final day in Dubbo, Lisa and Melissa visited the Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens and Old Dubbo Gaol then headed back to the train station for the scenic trip home. “I was so happy that Lisa had the opportunity to do something like this and it was such a privilege to share it with her,” Melissa continued. Our Affordian’s love to be part of these special experiences with their clients and see them grow in confidence whilst enjoying their new adventures. If you would like to be part of Afford Getaways and make memories contact your Team Leader.

REFRESH ON RED ALERTS
WOTS ON!
Afford is proud to have industry leading policies and procedures in place, such as the Red Alerts Procedure, to support our staff and clients when dealing with emergencies.
MAY 2021
Affordian’s were recently given a refresher on Red Alerts and incident reporting process at the Frontline Client Services Conference, as this is one of the most important procedures we have in place. In any situation where the poisons hotline or emergency services (police, ambulance, fire and rescue) are called, or where staff need to act as an ambulance taking a client to the hospital or a doctor, a red alert call must be made.
MAY 17-23: NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK (NVW) National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers. MAY 23: AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA May is Australia’s biggest Morning Tea month. Thursday 23rd May is the official day but you can host an event anytime throughout May or June. It’s simple, fun and best of all for a great cause! All you need to do is set a date, brainstorm some morning tea ideas, to help support the fight against cancer. MAY 19-26: SCHIZOPHRENIA AWARENESS WEEK Through this week, government, citizens, media and NGOs aim to reduce stigma towards people affected by schizophrenia.
“The great thing about red alerts is the guidance. If something has not gone right, staff are just a phone call away from speaking to a senior manager who can guide them in taking the right steps. Our staff are never alone. Support is out there,” said National Executive Manager for Accommodation & Respite, Kym Mafi. The Red Alerts phone line is available 24/7 and there is a rotation system as well, so you will always get help. If the first person on the rotation cannot answer, the next call will be directed to the next rostered person, and so on, until assistance has been given. When making a Red Alert:
What you need to do
What not to do
State your name
Do not call in the red alert in front of the client or other clients
State your site
Do not give us a full day description
A brief description of the incident Do not call red alert first in the case of requiring 000. Always call 000 first If we require more information we will ask
Do not panic, we are here to help
Ask for help if you need it As an NDIS provider, staff must also report incidents and allegations to the NDIS Commission. Even when we have already acted and responded appropriately, this must be completed. Failing to notify, investigate and manage reportable incidents can result in investigation and enforcement action by the NDIS Commission. “One thing I would love staff to keep in mind is that when making a Red Alert call, just take a breath. In these circumstances, we often get flustered but try to remain calm and have as much information with you as possible, ready to answer your senior manager’s questions,” said Kym.
