On the 26th of October clients from our day programs attended Bankstown Hoyts to launch our ‘Stay Alert Don’t Get Hurt’ campaign supported by the $4800 grant given by the NRMA. In consultation with the Bankstown City Road Safety Officer Jenny Murray the Condell Park Day Program developed and filmed a road safety video and catchy song highlighting the important road safety aspects including crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, exiting a bus and how to use a shared bike/pedestrian footpath. The video was viewed by many AFFORD staff and clients with their families along with Bankstown Deputy Mayor Toan Nguyen, Bankstown NRMA Branch Manager Jim Mantzikopoulous and the NRMA Shared Values team. A presentation followed the premiere screening to acknowledge the hard work put in by everyone involved and present awards for all the clients who starred in the movie. A huge thankyou again goes to the NRMA for their ongoing support over the years, to Paul Mitchell who managed the production of the DVD and all the participants who starred in the movie, excellent work guys!

AFFORD Compete at ‘The Sky’s The Limit’ Olympics On the 22nd of October, customers from our Day Programs attended the 8th annual “The Sky’s The Limit” Mini Olympics held at Beaton Park. The program was run by Essential Personnel, providing a variety of fun sporting activities to help people with disabilities develop skills to help them achieve life goals, increase independence and participate as valued and active members of the community. Ashfield have attended this event for three consecutive years and this time were joined by Green Valley and Windsor clients. Our customers loved making new friends along with experiencing the exhilaration and joy of competition in a variety of enjoyable activities such as long jump and running races. The hard work and dedication provided from the staff at Essential Personnel, along with volunteers from the community and schools in the region made this an amazing day for our customers and all participants making them feel like valued members of the community. Pictured above: Customers loving the competition.

Condell Park Set Sail Condell Park Day Program recently participated in the Sailability program as part of the $6000 Youth Club grant provided by Bankstown City Council. The initiative is run by experienced volunteers to encourage clients to get hands on assisting with winches and raising the sails, facilities also allow for all clients with disabilities a chance to participate. Our clients enjoyed the exciting opportunity to experience the thrills of sailing on the Sydney Harbour in a ‘sonar style’ yacht. Customers Mahmoud, Jake, Robbie and Andrew took part in the ‘maiden voyage’ assisted by staff members Paul Mitchell and Roseanna Barletta. The program is being held every second Wednesday, as the program only allows four participants to attend at one time giving all our clients from Condell Park a chance to experience the joys of sailing. Bankstown City Council are great supporters of AFFORD and over the years they have enabled AFFORD to provide many great social activities such as this to our customers, greatly enhancing the quality of life for these participants and their families.

Halloween Hits Blacktown A dark void filled with vampires, witches, ghouls and a variety of demonic creatures from the dark side descended upon Blacktown Day Program early on Tuesday morning. The atmosphere was one of gloom and doom but yet was also tinged with a sense of excitement of what was yet to come. Despite this, participants from Kings Park, Penrith and Chipping Norton sites were happy to visit and helped the Blacktown participants and staff get through the day unscathed, lucky there was plenty of dancing fun and good food! Prior to the end of this other world experience and with encouragement, our other worldly creatures participated in “the most scary creature competition and first, second and third place winners were most happy with the goody bags and prizes they received. Thankfully by the end of the day all of the dark visitors decided to leave us and Blacktown site descended into a place of calm once again.
