Thanks to a grant received through the Community Building Partnership Program the Lakemba Day Program received a new 12 seat bus to make it easier for the customers to access community activities and art and cultural events. The Lakemba Day Program customers participate in a wide range of activities within the Canterbury community area including Meals on Wheels, a Garden Care Program for the Aged and they also deliver the local newspaper in the Belmore area. The bus takes Lakemba customers to health and fitness classes, work experience, shopping excursions and local cultural events. The customers say that they love the view from the bus and they are getting to know all the landmarks of the area.
IT Update We have developed an IT Issue tracking section on the Intranet. This is under the Information Technology tab and then on the left is ‘IT Issue Tracking’. There is also a document that gives a brief instruction on how to use the tracking. For all non-urgent issues, please log these through the Intranet. For all other matters please either contact Tristan on 0429774139 or send an email to it@afford.com.au.

Purchasing Policy and Preferred Suppliers
Purchase Orders
Favourite Song: “Puzzle,” by Lapalux (feat. Andreya Triana).
A Purchase Order (PO) is required for all goods and services that are purchased by AFFORD. The purpose of a PO is to help plan expenses, to make sure that the money is in the budget for this purchase and to make sure that someone who has authority for that budget signs off on the purchase BEFORE it is made. Some people are raising POs, but the majority are simply being raised at the time the invoice is received. This doesn’t help AFFORD plan cash flow or make sure that approval is given BEFORE the purchase is made.
Favourite Movie: Once Upon a Time in the West
From now on a Purchase Order must be raised prior to ordering any goods and services for AFFORD.

Favourite Hobbies: Playing competitive strategy games online, reading philosophy, and arguing about philosophy
This will be monitored by Sarah Vandermeer and any exceptions will be noted and discussed with the relevant Manager. There will be no exceptions to this procedure.
Favourite Foods: Anything my wife makes. Probably her quiche If you could be an animal what would you be: Definitely a big cat of some sort What is your dream holiday destination: Home. I’m a real homebody. I would like to lock myself away from the world for two weeks. Bliss. If you won Lotto what would you spend the money on: At least a house for my family. Probably give heaps away to relatives, buy my local church a building. I’m also hoping to do a PhD one day If you had the power what would you change about the world: I would try to change people’s perceptions of people with disability to be more positive and inclusive. I would also get rid of greed. What is the nicest thing someone has ever done for you: My wife married me If you had to teach something what would you teach: Philosophy. Something no one knows about me: That I’m not an Australian citizen. I’m Dutch. My family moved away from the Netherlands in 1994. I spent my boyhood in Florida, U.S.A, and then moved to Australia in 2001. I’ve been here ever since and consider Australia “my country.” Hopefully I’ll get my citizenship one day
Preferred Suppliers A list of preferred suppliers is maintained by Kelly Butler, and a link to this list can be found on the intranet in the left hand column. It is in the best interests of AFFORD to use certain contractors and suppliers as we are able to negotiate better prices and with our contractors, ensure that they have the appropriate checks to work at AFFORD sites. We know, that with the best interests of AFFORD at heart, some sites have been proactive in considering other suppliers for smaller local services. We don’t want to discourage that, however it is absolutely necessary that they are confirmed with Kelly before they commence supplying goods or services to AFFORD. It is Kelly’s responsibility to verify suppliers, check prices and levels of service. If we do find a better supplier, chances are that they could be used at other sites, so please ensure that this process is followed through with Kelly.
Expenses greater than $3,000 We are introducing a change to the purchasing policy where any expense greater than $3,000 (excl. GST) needs to be supported by 2 quotes. No Purchase Orders greater than $3,000 will be approved without 2 quotes. Exceptions to this would be stock purchased for factory jobs and utilities. The reason for this change is again to provide better planning of expenses and to always make sure that we get the best service and supply available

Cherrywood Residents Graduate
Pictured: The Cherrywood residents holding their certificates
As part of the preparation for moving to their new homes at Thornton Estate and Warwick Street Penrith, residents at Cherrywood have been completing a series of skills based training courses to help them learn about living more independently in smaller houses. Recently they received certificates for completing the “My Life & My Home” part of the course. The course covered skills such as cooking, cleaning, sharing and independence. All the residents took part in the course which has 8 different modules, all designed to make sure that the transition to their new homes in Penrith is a very rewarding and positive journey.
E10 is the way to go When filling up your company car, pool vehicle people mover or petrol bus in the future we now use E10 fuel. When you pull up at the Caltex service station it is the green pump labelled “91 Octane”. This fuel is suitable for all petrol vehicles except high performance cars. Using Unleaded E10 can make a real difference to Australia’s environment. Unleaded E10 contains 3.55% oxygen, resulting in a cleaner burning fuel, providing a chance for AFFORD to reduce the amount of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Unleaded E10 significantly lowers smog causing emissions including carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons compared to regular unleaded fuels.
Pictured: At Caltex service stations pick the green pump on the right labelled “91”.
AFFORD currently purchases around 300,000 litres of petrol every year. By changing to E10 – 91 Octane fuel we will save up to 15 cents a litre and this means an extra $45,000 every year for AFFORD to spend helping our customers. So when you fill up at Caltex pick the green - 91 pump.

AFFORD LINK Team at Mater Dei, Camden Members of our important LINK Team are the face of AFFORD to many young school leavers and their parents. Laura Peterson, Nancy Elnajar and Angela Wilkinson attend over 100 School Expos or Parent Information Evenings across Greater Western Sydney every year, talking to parents and children in years 10-12 about AFFORD and the wonderful programs we can offer them once they leave school. In May, Laura attended a Parent Information Evening at Mater Dei School at Camden. Mater Dei School is a coeducational Catholic school for students with mild to moderate intellectual delay. The school offers both primary and secondary programs, catering for students from 5 to 18 years old. Students come from all over Sydney and you will find past Mater Dei students at nearly every AFFORD Day Program and Transition to Work Program site. Expos and Information Evenings allow the parents and carers of our potential customers to find out about various disability organisations and their programs. The LINK Team has a great relationship with the staff at Mater Dei and attend many of the school’s events.
