On the weekend of 30 and 31 May the AFFORD Board held its annual planning weekend. This year the event was held at the Sebel Resort and Spa at Windsor and all the Board Members and the Executive Team spent the whole day on Saturday working together to develop some strategic plans which will help take AFFORD forward into the future and into the world of the NDIS. It was a great day and everyone participated enthusiastically in the planning process. Everyone got together for dinner on the Saturday night and Dr Malcom Borland, who stepped down recently after 39 years as the President of AFFORD, also attended the dinner. At the end of the evening, current AFFORD President Neville Barnier, presented Dr Borland with the gavel that he had used for all his 39 years as AFFORD president. It had been bronzed and placed in a custom made glass display case, and was given as a small token of our thanks for his 40 years of service to AFFORD. Dr Borland was delighted with the gift and even tried the gavel to make sure that it would still work even if it were bronzed. We are all very grateful for his many years of service, guiding the organisation to its current position as a leader in disability.

The AFFORD Golf Day was held at Twin Creeks Golf Club at Luddenham on Friday 22 May, 2015. The weather was not kind, and it rained very heavily throughout the day, but despite the awful weather AFFORD Board Member Cliff Haynes, his brother Bruce and partners won the day. They received some wonderful new golf bags and the whole team said that they really enjoyed the day. The AFFORD Golf Day attracted 140 players from businesses across Western Sydney and raised over $35,000 for AFFORD, which all goes towards programs like Transition to Retirement and to provide special extras for our Day Program sites. This is the eighth year the AFFORD Golf Day has taken place and it wouldn’t be possible without months of work from Rhiannon O’Brien and Toni Preston. They are assisted every year by fantastic volunteers, Terry O’Brien, Ray Thomas and Rob Richards. Sponsors this year included Liddell Solutions, Hannam Group, Master Catering Services, K J Wood Products, CBA, Clintons Toyota Campbelltown, Telstra Business Centres West Sydney, ATA Fleet Repairer Group, BDO, Pelikan Artline, Blacktown Workers Club, Raine & Horne Commercial Penrith, GE Capital, Sinclair Hyundai, Forkbiz, Coca Cola, Frucor Beverages, Telstra Business, Maxxia and Self Move Hire. Joseph’s Journey Joseph was first introduced to AFFORD Employment Consultant Mariam Hussein, in April 2015 and Mariam immediately began to work on building his resume and other vocational activities to improve his opportunities to gain employment. Mariam and Joseph worked together to identify his skills and abilities to match them with the best possible employer. When Joseph was asked what he want to achieve in his time with AFFORD Employment in the initial appointment with Mariam, he stated, “ I want to work, I have to work. My body needs to work, my mind needs me to work. I don’t want to stay home and vegetate - working helps you socialise and meet people especially in the hospitality industry. I’m a good listener, I have travelled, I have seen and done a lot. I want to share my knowledge with the world through my career”. Joseph now enjoys working in his chosen hospitality field and with the post placement support of his Employment consultant, works almost full time hours weekly. Fire Warden Matthew at Windsor Windsor Day Program customer Matthew Carpenter had the chance to be the Fire Warden at a Fire Drill at the Windsor Day Program. Matthew, who many of us know through his great performances at the AFFORD Variety Shows, has always wanted to be a fireman, so during one of the regular fire drills at the Windsor site Matthew got to be the fire warden for the day. He made sure that all the people were out of the site and at the assembly point. He got to wear the red Fire Wardens hat and he really enjoyed the opportunity to experience a little bit of the fireman’s life. We are happy to report that all Windsor customers and staff were safe on the day!

Mothers Day High Tea for Carers Thanks to a grant from Penrith City Council, Penrith and Jamisontown Day Programs organised a Mother’s Day outing for carers. The high tea was held at King Henry’s Court in Penrith with 12 carers attending the event, which was designed to provide social engagement and break down barriers of isolation which many carers are faced with. As you can see from the smiles in the photo on the right everyone who attended enjoyed themselves.
