Woman of the Year for Lindsay was motivational speaker and mum-of-two Laura Watson, while the Community Service Award went to anti-domestic violence campaigner Angela Hadchiti. It was great motivation for the Afford Team, Christina, Kiralee, Kim, Rhiannon and Casey, and Board Members, Eva and Ange, to see so many local successful women being recognised for their achievements.

This Saturday, 11 March, be part of the I Spy Afford Van drive which is set to be a moment that will be remembered and echoed in the history of Afford! The branding on our vans are already making a huge impact! We receive compliments daily about our fresh new look from the general public, clients, staff and others in the disability sector. This Saturday a team of dedicated Afford staff are planning a massive drive around all Sydney areas in which we provide services and in areas we hope to expand into. The Drive will consist of 10 Afford branded vehicles (6 vans, Mowing Ute, Imax and 2 i30s). We are also planning to go live on Facebook and start the #ISPYAFFORD campaign. So, join the fun and watch out for our Afford vehicles, take a photo and tag us on Facebook using our hashtag #ISpyAfford. The best photo will receive best photo movie tickets. If you are interested in joining the Afford vehicle convoy our meeting point will be at head office at 10am and finish around 4. Please wear a colourful afford shirt if you do not have one then we can provide one from head office.
Hitting the Target
If you had to teach something what would you teach: How to cook. Something no one knows about me: It remains unknown.
Residents, Bruce and Colin, christened their new dart board recently, and hit a bull’s eye on their first go. Bruce and Colin have a fairly active lifestyle during the week and tend to prefer to take it easy in the evenings and on weekends. So rather than play sports at their local oval, they’ve started up their own quieter sport in their own back yard. As Bruce teaches Colin the finer skills of darts, they are looking forward to starting up a competition. So, if anyone is interested in playing, let them know and they’ll show you how it’s done.

A Tribute To Roy – The Gentle Joker
Sadly, we lost a much loved member of our team this week, with the passing of Roy Bieleczek a Supported Employee. Roy was a character, entertaining his fellow workers on the production line with his cheeky sense of humour. Roy started working with Afford four years ago, starting at the Campbelltown factory as a process worker. He is remembered as a gentle man, which wasn’t the first impression that he gave many people. He loved motor bikes and tattoos, with his team losing count of how many red back spider tattoos he had. Tracey Reid worked with Roy and said, “He loved to joke around with me and on many occasions, would advise he had papers in his car and when I asked him what papers he would say it was the paperwork for us to get married. It was a big joke between us”. He had respect for female workers and would get upset if people spoke about them in bad ways. He joined Auburn Men’s Shed and loved attending there and working on wood projects. He made a wooden storage box that went into his boot so things wouldn’t roll around. He also made a tool box and a jewellery box. He was a funny character who will be sadly missed and remembered fondly by the Afford Staff. He was skilful with hand tools and will be remembered as the gentle joker. If you would like to say farewell to Roy his funeral is on March 10th at 1:30 South Chapel, Forest Lawn, Leppington.

Gardening Program at Austral Every Monday, the clients of Chipping Norton Lifestyle Centre visit the Community Gardens at Austral. Here they learn about how to plant seeds and then plant them into the gardens. The clients nurture the plants by watering and weeding until the vegetables are ready to pick. Once this has been done they bring them back to site for cooking or to take home to their families. Another amazing Afford program for our clients!
Counting The Costs Of Invoicing Angela from Accounts Payable works hard each week to process the mountain of Afford invoices that she recieves. This week alone 375 invoices were counted and paid to a hundred vendors totallying $226,000 dollars. The Afford finance team do an amazing job processing the enormous amount of invoices each week and we need to be mindful to adhere to the deadline for supply of invoices. REMINDER: Wednesday at 12 Noon each week is the cutoff to supply invoices to our accounts team.
