Our mission is to bridge economic, racial and social

divisions by providing under-resourced youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts...

2012 was a year of building – and testing – capacity at Artists For Humanity. We employed more youth than ever before in our 21 year history, with 329 Boston teens joining our creative workforce. We hosted 36 public exhibitions and completed 688 custom art and design commissions for clients, including Neiman Marcus, Clark Shoes, Boston Lyric Opera, and the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. And we worked to increase our organizational leadership and capitalization to become more self-sufficient and lead our youth employees by example. It has been a great year of growth and success, and we are delighted to share some highlights with you.

rents the space, and trains and employs AFH teens for this business. Our teens have told their stories and sold their products to thousands of visitors. To date we have sold 1,420 of our “Bahk Bahk” t-shirt that sports a Boston terrier with a local accent. The Store also made the local news; WGBH Arts published a nice article on August 9 (http://www.wgbh.org/wgbharts/Article. cfm?articleID=6986).

New Innovation Partners:

Graduation day dawned for many AFH youth in late June. 38 (or 95%) of 40 high school seniors working at AFH in the 2011/2012 school year graduated on time. Many of these teens received scholarships to pursue post-secondary education and all 38 high school graduates are now enrolled in post-secondary education.

AFH began partnering with Artaic Innovative Mosaic, which has pioneered design software and robotic manufacturing systems that enable the quick and efficient creation of high-end, custom mosaic projects. After winning an impressive “Start” Grant from Mass Ventures, Artaic has chosen to use some of the grant funding to train AFH mentors and teen artists on using their software and mosaic-assembling robots to design, produce, and install new mosaics.

Youth Success:

AFH – The Store, our new boutique in Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall opened on Memorial Day weekend. Partnering with national retailer, Color Inc., AFH designed the store and provides all the products at wholesale, including youthcreated paintings, T-shirts, jewelry, and other unique Boston-inspired products. Color Inc.

AFH strategically strengthened “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning in our studios through a new series of special art and public exhibition projects. These projects require intensive youth study on STEM concepts and visual communication of these concepts through explanatory

images. In a recent collaboration with partners National Grid and Massachusetts Transport Authority, AFH teen artists undertook a several-month study on solar energy. Youth completed a series of science-based paintings – informed by an interactive lecture and online research – that communicate how solar energy works and its potential to impact the way we live. We will exhibit these works at Logan Airport in Summer 2013, effectively bringing the power of STEAM out of studios, schools and museums to democratize the learning and maximize its impact.

Strengthened Leadership: During the past year, AFH continued to thoughtfully and strategically expand our Board, with emphasis on capabilities in areas such as strategic planning, fundraising, business development, finance, and public relations. Currently at nine, Board membership will grow to twelve over the next two years. As part of these efforts, AFH strengthened our nominating and Board orientation processes; hosted several leadership trainings, including communications and messaging; and Board members participated in several leadership trainings hosted by foundation partners. There is so much more to tell, as captured in the following pages. Thank you so much for “tuning in.” In friendship and appreciation, Susan Rodgerson, Founding Executive/Artistic Director David Walek, Board Chair

“I would recommend AFH to a friend because AFH is not like a regular job because your mentors and everyone at AFH help you succeed in school, work, and college. You also discover new things about yourself and you develop important life skills. It’s also really fun.”

Artists For Humanity gratefully acknowledges our generous partners for their support during calendar year 2012

We had a large window in Boston Medical Center’s Pediatrics Department with a beautiful view of Boston, but, unfortunately, a not so beautiful view of the heating and air-conditioning vents. Artists for Humanity (AFH) saw the “problem” and created a stunning mural of a kid-friendly bird with many balloons floating in the air. And in more than 20 of the balloons, “welcome” is written in languages representing our diverse patient population. The Boston view is still there, but the vents are hidden! Working with the students and staff of AFH is a great experience. They are energetic, enthusiastic, creative and above all professional. AFH is my go-to place for any graphic design project. Robert Sege, MD PhD Boston Medical Center Professor of Pediatrics, Boston University School of Medicine
