AFLS+P endeavours, through its masterplanning team, to deliver places which are sustainable and which create social, environmental and economic value. We believe that ensuring that places are well designed should be a priority for everyone involved in shaping and maintaining the built environment.
AFLS+P have specialist interior design teams who, as well as working on bespoke interior commissions, integrate in the design process with our architects to create the stimulating environments found within our schemes. With an extensive knowledge of material and finishes the teams work closely with clients to ensure they are best placed to meet the ever changing and challenging nature of the industry.

For over 25 years AFLS+P have been one of the leading and most successful specialists in the design and delivery of sports and leisure projects. Working in the UK, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East, we have a developed a portfolio that embraces the whole spectrum of sports buildings, including stadia, swimming pools and leisure centres, together with the type of commercial developments very often associated with these projects.
We have been delivering high quality commercial environments for discerning clients over many years. Our pragmatic approach to cost, quality and value, is crafted to meet the individual budget and requirements of each client.
We have undertaken projects in scale from local community centres to major international venues, understanding the different criteria that each project will require. We have developed a reputation for providing exceptional solutions which recognise operating requirements, and in finding mechanisms where client aims are coupled with good design and successful delivery of projects.
Education AFLS+P have undertaken a wide range of projects within the education sector. Working with our clients, we offer advice and guidance to produce the right solutions, responding to the specific programme, function, and budget of each individual client brief.
Health We have been successfully designing and delivering environments in healthcare for three decades. Our team of experienced professionals are passionate about the healing environments we create for the people and patrons we work for.
Interior Design Working as part of the architectural team, or independently on specific projects, our team of Interior Designers channel their expertise into translating the clients brief into practical ,yet elegant, and cost effective solutions.
Residential A diverse range of projects for a wide range of clients have been undertaken in this field, from one off luxury dwellings in rural locations to dense mixed use urban developments, including apartments and student housing.

Ice Sports

AFLS+P have designed a number of facilities that contain Ice Sports for both professionals teams and public use. These projects include: Dundonald International Ice Bowl A new complex to replace the existing centre. The mixed use facility will contain an international standard ice rink for both ice hockey and skating (top left).
Coventry SkyDome Arena (Planet Ice) A 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena and home to the Coventry Blaze Ice hockey team. It is used for public ice skating sessions, ice skating lessons, ice hockey, concerts and various other events. Brighton Arena The arena is planned with both a public ice hall and a 3,000 seats arena to hold professional ice teams, and ice entertainment events. The centre will also hold restaurants and housing.
The Peak, Stirling The centre contains a state of the art curling rink used by Team GB for Winter Olympic training (bottom left).

9 Peter Mokaba Stadium World Cup 2010, South Africa AFLS+P designed the Stadium, and its associated support facilities, to be one of the major venues for the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

T National Indoor BMX Centre This ÂŁ24 million complex forms a major part of the National Cycling Centre which has helped to develop the British teams that have been so successful in recent Olympic and international competitions.

City Of Salford Community Stadium Salford AFLS+P were appointed to design and masterplan a 20,000 capacity stadium for the City of Salford. The delivered scheme accommodates community facilities alongside the home for Salford City Reds Rugby Football Club.

Rio 2016 Olympic Park Brazil This is a submission for the Olympic Park master plan competition for one of Rio de Janeiro’s main sites for the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games. The whole site has been designed with legacy use, as a thriving residential, business and sports district, central to the whole scheme, making maximum use of the extensive water front.

Selected Project Experience Baghdad Olympic Stadium The stadium has been designed to host the Olympic Games and also provide a destination venue for a variety of national and international events. The design requirements ensure the design and construction quality meets the Olympic, Paralympic Games and FIFA specifications.

Wenzhou Olympic Sports Centre & University The AFLS+P design centres around a stunning new park connecting to the wider landscape. The facilities include a new Olympic indoor arena and 50,000 seat athletics stadium capable of hosting international class sporting events, a sports university with indoor competition and training venues, a 5 star hotel and a new retail mall.

London Aquatic Centre The Aquatic Venue for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London. The facility contains two permanent 50m 10 lane pools. The legacy proposal will see a final capacity of around 2,500 spectators, from the 20,000 seat Olympic model.

The Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh The Royal Commonwealth Pool is a grade II listed building that is a significant part of Scotland’s 20th century architectural heritage. Consent was gained by AFLS+P in 2007 to bring new life to the building, creating pools that allow flexibility of use, with state of the art standards that will play host to diving events in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. At the same time the project maintained all original uses of the building while paying respect in the restoration of its original features. .

Stirling Sports Village An overtly contemporary building located on the edge of town besides a prime route into Stirling. Inspiration was gathered from both the industrial aesthetic of the nearby retail showrooms, and the undulating Ochils which overlook the Forth Valley in which the centre sits.

The University of Birmingham The University of Birmingham is developing a brownfield site, located at the south-east corner of their Edgbaston Campus, to provide a new 50m pool and indoor sports facility. Associated landscaping will provide a new pedestrian route into the main body of the campus from this key junction.

27 Trinidad Velodrome An International Velodrome for Trinidad and Tobago located just outside of Port of Spain on Trinidad island. The design created a highly efficient envelope volume which contains not only the cycling facility but also the full administration office suite for the cycling sporting body. The design has the flexibility to act as a muti-function arena for sport, concerts and events.

29 “The Pods�, Scunthorpe The Scunthorpe Sports Academy was a winning , open competition, scheme led by Andrew Wright and implemented by AFLS+P. This is one of the first projects in the UK where the type of building technique has been used for a major leisure project. The distinctive, organic and fluid building form that comprises a series of linked timber geodesic domed structures emerge from the landscape and integrates with the landscape in an innovative and gentle manner. Short listed for the World Architectural Festival in 2011, the project won a further 5 awards in 2012, including a Green Apple sustainability award, the Sustainable Development of the Year Award and a Public Realm award.
30 Luton 50m Pool Opened in 2012 this new wet and dry sports centre is based around a 50m competition swimming pool with integral FINA compliant diving boards up to 10m. In addition to delivering sports and fitness to the local community the Sports Village offers a base for regional sports development plus providing Luton with swimming and diving facilities capable of attracting high level competitions. The 50m pool includes a moveable boom and floor for increased flexibility, a 20x10m community pool which provides warm-down during competitions and a dry diving training centre. An 8-court sports hall, fitness gym, three studios, function room and cafĂŠ combine with the football and cricket pitches across Stopsley Common to complete the sports village.

University Of Leeds The project for the University of Leeds comprises a swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness and sports science facilities. The pool features a 25m, eight lane pool with a moveable floor up to a depth of 2m. This enables a wide range of activities for staff and students including sub-aqua, water polo, canoe polo, as well as casual swimming. The first floor of the building houses a 200 station fitness suite which overlooks the new pool. Additionally, the facility has a sauna and steam room, cafe and spectator seating.

Cardiff 50m International Pool The 50m pool and leisure facility is the centre piece of the new International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay. The plan of the building is ovoid, with the enclosure formed by a 360 degree glazed curtain wall.

Corby 50m Pool, Northamptonshire A 50m swimming pool with 20m 4 lane warm up and a fun pool. The leisure centre also has a fitness suite, crèche, health suite, cafÊ, offices, meeting rooms and dance/ exercise rooms.

National Aquatic Centre, Dublin A full Olympic standard pool and diving pool, with 3,000 seats, that meets all FINA standards, that is housed together with a major leisure pool facility. AFLS+P’s response to the client brief, was to design a building which was ‘divided’ into two - the ‘serious’ swimming side for training and competition and a fun leisure water side, which also contains a gym, a café and a health suite.

Birmingham Leisure & Aquatic Centre AFLS+P were appointed to design the new Aquatic Leisure Centre for Birmingham. The Council’s ambition was to develop a 50m swimming pool which would act both as a regional training venue (particularly for Diving) and as a community facility for those living and working around the city centre.

Basildon Sports Hub AFLS+P worked with PMP Leisure Consultants to fulfill Basildon District Council’s aspiration to create a large Sports Hub to act as a focus for sporting activity in South Essex. Through the use of workshops with local sports groups and other interested parties, facility mapping and demographics the team worked with the Council to develop, enhance and reenforce, their understanding of both local and regional need.

Westminster Lodge, St. Albans
Verulamium Spa, St. Albans
A 10 lane Competition Pool with 250 spectator seating, learner pool (100% moveable floor), confidence water, 200 station gym, spinning studio, enhanced cafe and bistro, youth gym, creche and soft play, two exercise studios, four court sports hall and a climbing wall.
Verulamium Spa is unique with its setting, integrated within a leisure and fitness centre. The main aspirations were to absorb and to echo the heritage of the site (Verulamium Park) in the design, layout and finishes and unite with modern spa features. The desire was to make the spectacular views of St. Alban’s Cathedral to be enjoyed as part of the Spa experience.

43 Swiss Cottage Swiss Cottage is a 34,000m2 redevelopment in North London, designed to act as a catalyst for the regeneration whilst providing a landmark civil amenity within a mixed-use development. The scheme comprises housing, of which 75% is private and 25% affordable, a community centre with both childcare and doctor’s facilities, retail units and a new leisure centre.
