Thank You: On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Staff, and the many, many volunteers of the association, THANK YOU for helping to make 2010-2011 a great year for the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values! During the past year, AFLV has been able to grow, develop, and impact the fraternal movement in positive ways thanks to the strong and effective relationships between the Association and its many partners like you - members, volunteers, exhibitors, other associations, and our fraternal partners. Financially, AFLV is in a helathy and strong position. It continues to be our goal to maintain financial stability while simultaneously keeping our focus as a non-profit organization serving the needs of the fraternal community as our #1 priority. In October of 2010, the Association was able to invest in our future through the purchase of our Office in Fort Collins, CO. The mortgage payement is lower than our previous lease, thus allowing for better cash flow and at the same time providing a real estate asset for the Association. Additionally this past year, the Association continued to contribute to its operating reserve, while still maintaining a postive bottom line. The importance of our reserve cannot be overstated, as we are subject to the vagaries of the economy which can effect membership and event participation. We are committed to establishing a reserve equal to one year’s worth of operating costs.

Membership is certainly a barometer of our health, and at the end of this fiscal year we have 530 total member subscribers within our various membership categories (this does not include Fraternal Values Society Individual Members). This number shows significant growth over the past year. It is our continued goal to engage those individuals within our member Caitlin Roberts groups, and to exceed their expectations through successful delivery of leading edge Chair, Board of Directors programs and services. Speaking of those programs and services, we had several accomplishments in 2010-2011 in these areas as well. The undergraduate leadership conferences continue to provide our foundation and both conferences were big successes. We are thrilled to see continued growth in both the National Black Greek and National Cultural Greek Leadership Conferences. The Professional House Directors’ Conference continues to run strong. In June of 2010 we launched The Gathering, our professional development experience. In January we launched our first Global service immersion experience to El Salvador and this May, a women’s only service immersion to New Orleans. This summer we will launch our first session of AFLV LeaderShape. We are also very enthusiastic about the launch of the Fraternal Values Society. Additionally, this past year we unveiled several new resources and continued positive growth with many others. The Board of Directors launched a strategic plan for the Association this year as well. Emphasis has been placed on leading edge experiences reflective of ethical values; continuous improvement through assessment; marketing; and resource management. Our Board continues to focus on our strategic direction, board member development, and long-term financial management. We think you will agree that 2010-2011 was a great year for our Association, and with your continuing support and assistance, we believe we have positioned ourselves well for the future.

The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values exists to stimulate the growth and development of fraternity/sorority council and chapter leaders by promoting leadership, educational, and values based experiences and resources for student leaders, their advisors, and the larger fraternal market. The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) is the showcase for cutting-edge Fraternity/ Sorority programming, technology, thinking, and concepts.
AFLV VISION: All Fraternity/Sorority members exemplify ethical values. AFLV MISSION: The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values provides experiences that challenge and encourage fraternity/sorority members to live ethical values and implement best practices. The annual conferences are the premier programs of the Association. The conferences offer comprehensive coverage of the issues for both men and women and members of all councils and chapter including IFC, NPHC, NPC, NALFO, and MGC. Additionally, the Association provides training and professional development opportunities for campus advisors, house directors, fraternity/sorority headquarters staff, and volunteers through our various programs and services. AFLV’s members and conference attendees have direct contact with over 3000 undergraduates representing nearly 300 schools and universities. The annual leadership conferences provide educational sessions, outstanding nationally recognized keynote speakers, and several featured speakers to meet the diverse needs of its broad audience. AFLV annual conference participants are typically the decision-makers for both their chapter and their councils. AFLV is currently working to bring so much more to you including printed and on-line resources, webinars, and more! YOUR Association is growing to meet the diverse needs of you, our members. conferences & events 2011 Central Fraternal Leadership & National Black Greek Leadership Conferences The CFL/NBGLC was held February 10-13,2011, at the Rennaissance Grand & Suites and the America’s Center in St. Louis, MO. A record attendance of over 2400 participants joined together for a weekend chalked full of education, development, networking, and a whole lot of fun. Programming included position-specific information for Fraternity/Sorority governing councils, chapters, advisors, and graduate students. Also included was specific information about current events and issues that impact the Fraternity/Sorority community on campus. The NBGLC Stroll Competition remains a highlight of the event showcasing the talents of 10 teams to a sold out crowd of over 1400. The Numbers:

2011 West Fraternal Leadership & f National Cultural Greek Leadership Conferences The WFL/NCGLC was held April 7-10,2011, at the Hilton Hotel in beautiful Costa Mesa, CA. Over 700 of our interfraternal brothers and sisters came together to celebrate and honor what it is to represent fraternal organizations. The Leadership Conference offered nationally recognized and highly sought after keynote speakers, professional and very popular nationally known featured speakers, educational sessions, an awards & assessment program, pre-conference workshops, targeted institutes, and an phenomenal opportunity to network with fellow Fraternity/Sorority leaders. The he eN National ational H House ouse D Director irector Conference Confe The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values is proud to support the House Directors that play such a vital role in the chapter house management of our undergraduate fraternity and sorority chapters across the country. We do that through the Professional House Directors Conference which serves as the premier opportunity for fraternity and sorority House Directors to gain valuable skills and keep up with the issues that impact them in today’s ever changing campus environment. This year 95 participants joined us in Providence, Rhode Island June 23-26, 2011 with a post conference excursion to New York City, June 26-June 29.

conferences & events The Gathering The innaugural Session of the Gathering was held in June of 2010. This 4-day, 3-night institute style event involved a small group of p professionals who desired an advanced professional development e experience designed to catapult professionals working with fraternitties and sororities to literally inspire, transform, and evoke change w within the field. The Gathering is intended to be a sabbatical and d departure of thought to produce interruptions among professionals aand their way of thinking and behaving. Participants challenged o one another to push the boundaries of what could be accomplished tthrough the fraternal movement. Teniell Trolian of Kent State was tthe recipient of the $5000 Grant given following the experience. Her ffellow participants chose her project: Increasing Fraternity/Sorority P Professional Competence: Impacting the Fraternal Movement through Professional Learning and Development as the outstanding proposal. Information about The Gathering 2012 will be available soon.
AFLV LeaderShape Session We are excited to announce a new partnership with LeaderShapeŽ, Inc. This six day institute will take place July 25-30, 2011 at the University of Kansas. This institute challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values. Participants explore not only what they want to do, but who they want to be. Dynamic, challenging, and exciting, the week is intended to produce a breakthrough in the leadership capacity of participants — benefiting them individually, as well as their respective communities and the organizations they will go on to lead and serve in the future; fraternal, campus, city, state, country, and the world.
Service Immersion Experiences New in 2011, The Service Immersion experiences brought together fraternity and sorority student leaders from around the country in a week of service, immersion, cultural exploration, and values development. El Salvador, January 2011: 20 participants worked alongside the people of El Salvador on various construction projects. Participants also had the opportunity to interact with local children at an orphanage, work with school children in the communities visited, and learned more about the cultural and political history of El Salvador. New Orleans, May 2011: This program was offered in partnership with The Leadership Institute - Women with Purpose. Trip participants had the unique opportunity to explore their inner leader while serving. Their rewarding experience included service with the New Orleans Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, dynamic discussions, personal reflection opportunities, group work, and hands-on skill development. resources Awards & Assessment The AFLV Awards & Assessment program is designed specifically to assist councils in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in their programming and council management. The documents outline the actions and policies of an ideal council. As such, if councils utilize the program for goal setting and as a guide for action and visionary accomplishment, they will be well on the road to achieving excellence. Participating councils receive a full assessment report that measures both their own longitudinal progress as well as benchmarking them against their peer councils. A record number of councils submitted award packets this year with a total of 452 category submissions received. The awards were given at both the CFL/NBGLC and WFL/NCGLC Conferences.
Connections Magazine AFLV Connections is the Associations award winning quarterly magazine highlighting information, stories, best practices, and news that impact our members. The main goal of Connections is to provide members with regular opportunities for development, a connection to the Association and their peer members, and to provoke thought within members’ communities that will enhance their fraternal experience and their leadership roles. Over 1200 issues of the magazine were distributed each quarter to our membership and key constituents. We are very pleased to have received four awards for design and content at the Fraternal Com-munications Association annual conference in May of 2011.
Officer Handbook Series O N this year, this handbook series was designed with the contempoNew ra rary fraternity and sorority student leader in mind. Utilizing the resources aand information within these handbooks as supplement to other leade ership training opportunities will assist the campus advisor in creating vvalues congruent fraternal organizations. The Officer Handbooks provide cchecklists, best practices, advise, and samples that aid officers in their day to day work, helping them be more successful. The series includes handb books for Academic Achievement, Council Management, Leadership & EEducational Development, Membership Recruitment and Intake, Philantthropy & Community Service, Public Relations, Risk Reduction & Management, and Self Governance & Judicial Affairs.
House Director Manual In developing the content for this updated manual, the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values compiled the most current and relevant tools, tips, checklists, forms and other materials essential for the women and men serving in these important roles. This updated manual contains new information on today’s college students, trends in Fraternity and Sorority life, and much more! Utilizing the resources and information contained within this guide will assist house directors in becoming the most effective resources for the students with whom they reside.

resources LeaderLink LeaderLink brings educational development and content in the form of live webinars for chapter and council leaders as well as professional staff members. Topics are chosen that both inspire and provide skill development. They provide a great way to bring high quality, professional content to a large audience on individual campuses at a very low cost. This past year nine total LeaderLink Webinars were presented.
AFLV Blog The AFLV Blog (aflv.blogspot.com) is a weekly blog designed to bring cutting edge and thought provoking content to the fraternal market. Topics range from musings about current events and challenging the status quo, to celebrating the accomplishments and actions of particular organizations and individuals. We are pleased with our continuing growing readership. In the past fiscal year over 8800 individuals have read the blog with a total of nearly 12,000 page views!
AFLV Career Center The AFLV Career Center is designed to help connect individuals with new employment opportunities. Our targeted categories include Fraternity/Sorority Advising Positions, Graduate Assistantships, Interns, Fraternity/Sorority House Directors, and more! Individuals have the opportunity to create their own anonymous profile that will send email updates as jobs are posted. Employers and recruiters: whether you are a University office or a House Corporation Board, this resource provides access to our specialized niche.
Love is Louder Campaign Love is Louder was started by actress Brittany Snow, The Jed Foundation and MTV to build on the outpouring of support online after the lives of multiple teenagers were lost to suicide in September 2010. This movement strives to amplify the momentum of other inspiring online campaigns and invite anyone who has felt mistreated, misunderstood or isolated into the conversation. We are here to raise the volume around a critical message -- that love and support is more powerful than the external and internal voices that bring us down, cause us pain and make us feel hopeless. AFLV teamed up with the Jed Foundation and MTV on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 when councils, chapters, and individuals joined us in TURNING UP THE VOLUME!
Electronic & Social Media AFLV continued our efforts to stay abreast of the ongoing development and change within this evergrowing arena. Our monthly e-newsletter The Buzz goes to over 10,000 individuals. We continue to update and improve our website and member interface. Our Facebook Fan Pages provide interactive opportunity with our 1800 “Fans” to stay abreast of what’s happening in the Association, We have nearly 2000 followers onTwitter (many of whom participate in our weekly #GreekChat). LinkedIn provides a more professionally oriented network through our group. We utilized FourSquare at our events to mobilize participants and provide information. And we unveiled our very first (with more to come) Conference App at the West/ NCGLC event in April!

Giving Levels In order to recognize those individuals and organizations that have made generous donations to the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values, we have developed the following lifetime giving levels: Visionaries $10,000 and above Diamond Members $5,000 to $9,999 Crystal Circle Members $1,000 to $4,999 Peak Performers $500 to $999 Supporters $100 to $499 Friends Up to $99 Giving levels are determined by the total amount of dollars donated to AFLV. Recognition for major gifts begins with the Peak Performer level. Silent Auction donations and payments, although greatly appreciated, do not count toward lifetime giving levels.
Honorary ry and dM Memorial emoriiall G Giving iv A honorary or memorial gift is an appropriate way to recognize someone’s life, service, and accomplishments. AFLV offers opportunities for those who wish to associate the name of a family or an individual with a project, a scholarship, or program of enduring worth. Common opportunities include recognizing the service of campus fraternity/sorority advisors, chapter advisors, and student leaders. Memorial gifts are acknowledged to the family while honorary gifts are acknowledged to the individual.

SScholarships h l hi Several organizations have chosen to make donations dedicated to providing scholarships for individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend AFLV conferences and events. These organizations include Alpha Sigma Phi, Sigma Lambda Beta, Zeta Tau Alpha, The Order of Omega, and Greek101. Recognized scholarships in the name of your organization are a great way to pass the gift of leadership & values based education on to the next generation of Fraternal leaders. aflv silent auctions Silent Auctions Another phenomenal way to support the Association is through the silent auctions that take place at each of the undergraduate leadership conferences. So many individuals, organizations, speakers, and businesses donate to these auctions. Although this giving doesn’t count toward the individual giving levels, it is instrumentally important to the Association. Similarly, the individuals and organizations that bid on the auction items provide the funding that supports our programs, events, scholarships, and general operating costs. Thank you to everyone that has supported AFLV through the Silent Auction vehicle.

2010-2011 membership report The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values offers membership subscriptions that run on an annual cycle in conjunction with the Association’s fiscal calendar beginning July 1st each year and expiring on June 30th the following year. Membership expires on June 30th each year regardless of the initial date the membership subscription is purchased. Membership subscriptions are available in categories: Council Membership: Intended for individual councils from each campus, council membership is open to any fraternity/sorority governing council from any campus. Membership is based on individual council size (number of chapters within the council). Chapter Membership: Intended for individual chapters from any campus. Membership is provided at a flat rate regardless of chapter size. Associate Membership: Associate membership is a special category of membership available to businesses and organizations wishing to broaden their markets or work cooperatively with the fraternal community. Associate Members represent the supplier/service provider community within AFLV. We have been blessed to see overall membership growth within our various membership categories (this does not include Fraternal Values Society Individual Members). There is some individual movement between the IFC and Panhellenic categories, in part due to some slight shifitng of categories to match the Awards & Assessment process. The overall number shows significant growth over the past year even without the addition of the Fraternal Values Society as a member category. It is our continued goal to engage those individuals within our member groups, and to exceed their expectations through successful delivery of leading edge programs and services.

fraternal values society On most campuses there are members of fraternities and sororities who WANT to forward the values conversation within their community, but don’t know where or how to begin. The Fraternal Values Society exists to provide a home for that conversation, to provide voice to the values movement, and to create a sustainable network within each fraternal community for those who want their fraternal experience to be representative of the founding fraternal/ ethical values of our organizations. Vision: The Society will create, develop, and support the most trusted values congruent fraternal organizations. Mission: To illuminate the central values that guided the historical founding of general fraternities and sororities, and to incorporate these values into the contemporary fraternity and sorority experience.

financial snapshot AFLV Continues Solid Financial Performance in 2010-2011 As Secretary-Treasurer, I am happy to be able to report that AFLV continues to exhibit strong financial performance in 2010-2011. Results from operations (unaudited) for the fiscal year are detailed in the charts and graphs included in this report. As we did in 2009-2010, AFLV will finish 2010-2011 in the black and exceed budgeted net operating income goals for the year. Here are some key items that impacted AFLV’s financial performance in the past fiscal year: Undergraduate Conferences The two undergraduate leadership conferences continue to provide the Rick Barnes financial foundation to the organization. The Central Fraternal/National Black 2010-2011 Secretary-Treasurer Greek Leadership Conference continues to grow each year. The West Fraternal/ National Cultural Greek Leadership Conference experienced lower than expected participation. It is important that we continue to support this event through attendance in order for the association to be able to provide the event at the level we all have come to expect. Membership Subscription Revenues Member Subscriptions were up again this year (see the chart on page 24). The Association experienced total growth in this area of 5% over the previous year. Membership subscription still seems strongly tied to conference participation. It continues to be the goal of the Association to provide strong enough resources and support that value is found in member subscriptions regardless of participation in the undergraduate leadership conferences. Fraternal Values Society The Association unveiled this major initiative this past fiscal year. Strategic goals for this program include the hiring of a full time staff member to nurture and support the Society. As the Society expands to campuses, this will become a major budget line item on both the revenue and expenditure sides. We are encouraged as the Fraternal Values Society has started strong with 20 charters being granted in the first few months of operation. The new staff member will start work in alignement with the new fiscal year after July 1. Investments & Reserves As a young Association, the board continues to place emphasis and focus on building a reserve equal to one year of operation so that in the event of a catastrophic emergency, the Association may survive. We are well on our way to achieving this end goal, however it will be a primary focus over the next few years. Related to this conversation is that of investments. The Association made a major investment in our future this past fiscal year through the purchase of our Office Condominium in Fort Collins, CO. This was a very strategic decision that not only contributed to our balance sheet but also improved the cash flow necessary to operate by creating a lower monthly payment than our previous lease. Public Support We are grateful to our fraternal partners and friends of the Association who have really stepped up their support of AFLV in the past year. Grants and giving saw improved outcomes during FY 10-11 and it is our goal to continue on this path of continued focus on development work as a 501(c)3 organization.
