The Competition objective was to study a museum programme for an unused historic building that belongs to the Prado Museum. The project dealt with a demanding unique historic content that had to be preserved, with an increase in overall building area to full-fill the competition museum programme. As the Team Coordinator, my role was to manage the entire competition material, develop the detailed construction-section and to mount the final layout. PHILIPPUS REX

VISTA AÉREA
The challenge for this project was to combine a full auditorium with a smaller multipurpose black-box while respecting the city scale and relation with an existing historic building that now served as the foyer. The shape and colour of the auditorium is a reference to old classical horse-shaped opera houses that thrived in Europe during the 18th and 19th century. I collaborated on the development of both the Competition drawings and Execution phase development.

This project was executed with a local French office and the promoter Eiffage Construction. I collaborated mostly on the development of the complex facade: in-situ horizontal white concrete with pre-fabricated vertical brise-soleil that produced a ventilated facade with the objective of unifying both the strict window scheme and the functional dimensions of the multi-purpose building.

In this office I collaborated in the Licensing and Execution development of old city-centre historic buildings in Porto. These were renovated to accommodate modern apartments. The following images show some examples of the strategy adopted: structural stone and wood are preserved and cleaned while new living solutions are imagined to suite modern day needs.

During Erasmus, and while visiting some of the Gunnar Asplund’s famous projects I came across this little-know architect that had few material published. Lewerentz was an architect that had in fact worked with Asplund in Sweden. After some research I found out that this was an architect that had mastered, not only Classicism, but also Modernism and Brutalism in a fashion that was always ahead of his time. The coherence and quality of his work was, to me, truly inspirational.

This project was developed for the full-year Project course. A research was made into the drawings of scenarios by Adolf Appia and dance choreographies of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze. Henrich Tessenow's Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden was the culmination of previous visions. The notions of light and shadow and rhythmic sequence served as influence to design an open space academic where plenty of light floods the space.

Modern Suburban expansion often creates un-built territory voids that can, in the future, be part of the previous realities. In the project area site, a metro tunnel and bridge already existed. A metro station was built but never open. The idea was that it could be opened in the future. Because of the existing Forrest valley, a density concept idea was used to think of elevated structures with it's ends connected to the urban meshes.

The project was to refurbish an abandoned 18th century defense Fortress in a museum. The monumentality of the fortress was such it could be, in itself, a museum piece placed in the center of the new museum. The new building would be supported by a massive concrete arches that supports the ceiling and the glass panes that protect the two interior places. You could always admire the ruins of the fortress while visiting the museum.
