the thesis project was inspired by a workshop on the conversion of railway stations in Milan, not only as a redevelopment of Scalo Farini, but as an intervention on a regional scale represented by an equipped axis along the north - west directing and an intermodal port in the south of Milan. The areas considered are Garibaldi railway station, Scalo Farini, Bovisa, Expo 2015 and Melegnano. It is proposed in this way to give Milan a key role with respect to a new development in the country and to its new location in the international economic panorama. This hypothesis, supported by macroeconomic and macro-urban research, started from the knowledge that Italy is in a strategic position in Europe and worldwide: at the center of the pendulum routes and in pan-European corridors. In this way it is proposed to give relief to the sectors of Made in Italy leading the Italian economy, with Lombardy as leader for furniture, fashion and, in particular, mechanical engineering, and logistics in the South. Due to changed mode of shipping goods (broken pendulum) and the strong growth in size of container ships, the South has a chance to present itself as a formidable logistical base in the Mediterranean, the center of trade between East and West. In the North, a development perspective is reflected in a revival of small and medium-sized enterprises located in Lombardy region. The economic restructuring proposal

provides for a ‘reversal of the settlement, which translates into a new model of a polycentric city. “Città Lombardia” opposes the hypothesis of “Grande Milano” supported by a large part of the ‘conventional urban planning theory and is more aware of the structural relations within which organizes the territory: a city of regional dimensions, which can enable a decisive response to any problem of congestion and environmental degradation. The shape of the city that would be created is a braided polygon, where Milan is its center, while the provincial capitals in the suburbs of the region, the vertices.

The equipped axis The project is characterized by the idea to connect, through a linear and continuous “equipped axis”, the strategic areas that are aligned along the northwest direction of Milan, from the management center, through Garbaldi railway station, scalo Farini, Bovisa Politecnico, to the Expo 2015. Insisting along the current route of the regional rail services and the high capability focused on Garibaldi station and powered by a regional road connected to the urban network, the axis is configured as a modern “ Bastion”, with constant height and section, able to enliven and impose a recognizable order to the interventions in the individual areas. From the functional point of view we should explore the possibility that the equipped axis - once positioned the major infrastructure and letting everywhere green areas (agricultural, public, sport facilities) serve as a unifying connective - can accommodate pedestrian and cycle paths and all those functions that can be disposed according to convenience along its linear development. Along that equipped axis, will be arranged interventions relating to the specific areas of application.

A new directional center The new role of Milan concerns the directional center of Garibaldi: the new territorial configuration, railway and road network, give to Garibaldi a central role for Milan “CittĂ lombardiaâ€?, from regional to international affairs. The management center could thus be reserved exclusively to the strategic activities for the configuration of the main productive sectors and for their leadership of a new development in the country. The new tertiary in Garibaldi consists of a central office with an integrated system of functions and a production center for the three sectors of Made in Italy (fashion, furniture and instrumental mechanics).

CENTer FOR FINancial RELATIONS Above the train tracks, is located the financial reporting center and the developement background research center . The first would be responsible for providing structural worldwide evaluations offering a range of possible lines of developement. The second would address the funding for the restructuring of bankrupt companies. The building, developed in length, going to cover the entire extension of the arrival tracks of the high capacity. It is characterized by a series of pillars holding up levels with a shape of plates, dedicated to meeting rooms, and a gallery with a barrel vault, which is located along the whole building containing offices and archives. Under the building, among the pillars row, stands a covered plaza overlooked by ticket retailing points and offices of the national railways.

A NEW PRODUCTION TERTIARY In the ex AEM gasholder area in Bovisa, the project provides an alternative response to the request for the Politecnico di Milano extension. The proposal is an alternative to the existing educational plan, basing the faculty activities on the relationship between the world of production and the university. in this site, it is to establish an experimental area with inter-

disciplinary relations, basing the project on the presence of different functions: tne university, and the new production tertiary. These functions contribute to the creation of an excellence center of capital goods, where the Politecnico designs, with demonstrational activities for education and training of students, production lines with advanced technological solutions, consisting of machines produced by

companies of specific fields. As a connecting element between the two functions there will be some administrative areas of collaboration between universities and business enterprises. As for the new production tertiary, Bovisa could be base of a machine tools technology center; operators of this center will be both CNR researchers and academics, thus confirming the close collaboration with the university.

The building, repeated in series three more times, is characterized by tower connected by skyways to a barrelvaulted gallery. The tower, used for offices and departments, soar above the underground street and the walkway boulevard with a sloping wall in which lies an auditorium. Suspended walkways lead to the exhibition gallery, spaces dedicated to showrooms which will be the permanent exhibition of working production lines.

An islamic cultural center for Milan The project for an Islamic city center has been long a subject very dear to the city of Milan. There are many opinions on the feasibility of the center, often discordant, divided on the possibility of one large building or allow the proliferation of many small prayer halls. The proposal is to offer the city not just a dedicated area for muslims, but a real cultural center, characterized by the presence of a sufficiently large prayer hall for the faithful, an exhibition area, a covered market, areas dedicated to religious school and hospitality. The Islamic center is located in the Expo 2015, an attractive place because the faithful may reach the area in a short time through improved public transport, and because it would allow Expo’s islamic users to profess their Creed without discomfort. The building is therefore characterized by a central axis of distribution, very large,in which is located the covered market. From it you can reach the hypogeal plaza that leads to the prayer hall and exhibition appendix. On the other side of the market however, there are the auditorium and two buildings marked by covered squares devoted to religious education and accomodations.

MELEGNANO intermodal port A new wholesale market April 2011 O_mmx150

THE WHOLESALE MARKET The city center wholesale market appears to be highly inefficient: its structure needs major maintenance works as well as an intervention to remove asbestos from roofs, and many areas are poorly organized, lacking elements necessary now to ensure high quality products, such as cold chain and a system to automate the distribution of goods, or simply the flaps to facilitate the movement of goods on pallets. The 70% of wholesale market goods are dedicated to the hinterland, and only the 30% to the city center:, the more reason to place in Melegnano a wholesale market dedicated to the neighboring provinces and keep the old one just for the city center. In particular, our project is outlined as a set of six pavillions closely related, referring to a main routing platform. The whole complex, with both flaps in the halls and in the platform, is characterized by a constant temperature of about 14째 C. thanks to the cold chain. In this way, the goods, coming from manufacturer in containers at room temperature, would go into the wholesale market with no temperature changes. From the sorting platform would start an automated system for distributing goods by conveyor belts, distributed in the six pavillions. Each individual pavilion, characterised on long sides by loading docks, has a free plan in order to allow vendors to position themselves along the two aisles, dedicating the central part to the distribution of users. The sorting of goods it would happen in an automated manner, to a height of 8 meters, as well as the cold-storage located on the side of the conveyor. Over the cells, an area dedicated to offices and common areas for employees would enable each individual seller to have a location for the management of commercial treatments. The pavilion has a tower that contains systems, emphasizing the importance of cooling systems that characterize the structure.

A MEDITERRANEAN CITY ON THE YELLOW SEA The idea of the project, according to a settlement of medium size (part of Ling Gang New City), is based on the choice of structuring the future expansion to a perpendicular direction to the coast, corresponding to the historically prevalent scheme in Tianjin and the Hai river, as opposed to saturation of a conurbation in a northeastsouthwest direction behind the new waterfront. The project is a reinterpretation of the Hippodamian plan of the classic mediterranean city, with two orthogonal axes and a regular grid. The longitudinal axis, with a scrolling function, is marked by a sequence of tall buildings (for business, services, and residential units); the transverse axis is configured as a great commercial boulevard, pedestrian and wide tree-lined. The residential areas are exemplified in two typologies: the residential block, six storeys above ground; and the single family court, one or two floors above ground, sized as submultiple of the insula type. As in the city of Miletus by Hippodamus, public spaces and green areas are arranged along the generator axes, according to multiple or submultiple of the grid, so as to be inscribed in it. Basically there were identified two public squares: the culture one (“Piazza della Cultura”) and the marketplace (“Piazza del Mercato”), both surrounded by arcades and marked by the monumentality of collective buildings. The Culture square is considered as a tribute to the recent Italian architecture: Theatre (by Carlo Aymonino); Religious building (by Guido Canella); Gate (by Aldo Rossi). To the south, around the reconfigured lake, a great metropolitan park holds leisure facilities.

MILANO SPAZIO BICI A place for cyclists June 2010

MILANO SPAZIO BICI Along the naviglio Grande, where the old stony bridge connects the Ripa to Santa Maria delle Grazie al naviglio, backed on massive concrete feet, here is the new city aggregation space: Milano Spazio Bici. It originates as a reference point for those who daily use the bike, or even for those who use it only on Sundays. Born as a showcase to advertise an item seemingly simple but very communicative. A space dedicated to a product of everyday use, where you can know it, buy it, fix it. MSB stands in an empty space along a thick series of buildings, which well lends itself to a patching intervention. The architectural design aims to sew up the series of buildings but also to leave a clear sign. The expression of this space stands in the way it addresses the audience, offering not only an exhibition, but also public spaces for bicycle users: a shop, a garage, a screening room, a bar. The inspiration is a nostalgic reinterpretation of the artisans building in the historic district of Isola, a meeting place dear to fans of the cycle. But here the temporal context changes. In an age where you need an Ipad to connect to the Web, MSB is presented as a homemade version of an Apple center. A place for social gatherings, built around a commercial product of last generation. The product, however, is on two wheels, but apps are the same: here you can touch, try, buy, fix, see, understand or simply pass the time. The building is accessible by foot with an external staircase, or by bike, thanks to the glass lift placed in front. Every single floor is enclosed in a glass box. The facade of the building is very light and permeable, thanks to the outer skin made of a grid of LEDs, that offers the perception of what is happening inside. The use of LEDs allows to describe the content of space, involving the entire neighborhood. The exterior of the lot, crossed longitudinally by a lighted bike path, is instead characterized by an interactive path that is the real MSB museum.

a health care quarry The project stems from a careful analysis of the project area, a countryside zone close to the Belgiardino quarry near Lodi. The attention on the area project was established following analysis of the “green city”, a theme of Soviet cultural nature, whose function was to be able to equip a park as large as a city devoted to temporary home and recreational leisures sorrounded by nature. In this case, the principle of the “green city” has been altered, placing as a function, rather than leisure and recreation, personal health care. The proposed project is a long-term care center located the rural area overlooking the artificial lake created from the quarry. The design is not limited to a single treatment center, but has created a system of diverse residences according to the type of hospital stay (limited or ad - mortem), and a building dedicated to health care and psycho physical wellbeing. The entire complex, totally immersed in nature, also features outdoor treatment programs. In particular, the project is divided into three distinct areas: the health care center, is located directly on the water; thanks to its orientation, it defines two orthogonal axes, along which are distributed the two residential types. Parallel to the quarry, there are the circular temporary residences; orthogonal to the care center, there is an equipped park divided into quadrants, within which alternate facilities for care and treatments to cross shaped dwellings dedicated to the ad-mortem stay. The intent is to propose a kind of attendant microcosm where the resident can live in serenity and appropriate treatments his last moments of life.

NEON SHOES Dafne is a shoes shop owned by friend. After working there as a buyer and visual merchandise, the collaboration has continued reviewing some details of the store, located in a landmark building in the historic center. The request was to revitalize the main wall of the store, the largest and free from exhibitors where, until then, there was a video projection screen. The idea was to create a kind of altar where to put some pieces of the store, giving them a sort of divine aura. Besides, women consider the shoes as gifts of the sky...So, five rounded niches, placed in row, redraw the wall; the neon lights products without making them too visible.

Objects appear in a stylized shape but at the same moment well defined, the opalescent effect of neon gives them an unusual result, almost alien to everyday life. www.dafneboutique.com
