National Philanthropy Day ® 20221
Today, we honor those whose life’s work and passion has been to serve others; to make life better. The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) allows those who choose to spend their lives serving others the opportunity to continue to grow and learn, and be the best that they can be. I hope that everyone celebrating National Philanthropy Day with us feels appreciated and valued for all that you do. You are making a tremendous difference in our community.
Today, now more than ever, it is important to GiveWhereYouLive. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, we have seen how one disaster can decimate an entire region. Thanks to local nonprofit organizations, like those represented here today, we can offer those impacted with hope and a second chance at rebuilding their communities.
AFP is dedicated to fostering the development and growth of fundraising professionals and promoting the highest ethical standards in the fundraising profession. The annual NPD Awards is our way of promoting and celebrating the impact we collectively have on our community as well as raising funds to help our professional members achieve their fullest potential.
I would like to sincerely thank the Board of Directors for your service to AFP and your commitment to serve others. Special thanks to Heidi Alzate Kaufman, CFRE, for chairing our most important event of the year. You and the NPD Committee did an amazing job and I am incredibly grateful. Thank you to our corporate partners for supporting this important work and making today so successful.
Warm regards,

FLITE Center & SunServe
Homelessness is a devastating experience that has a significant negative impact on an individual’ s physical and mental well being, development, functioning, and life trajectory. Lesbian, Gay, Bi sexual, Transgender, and/or Questioning (LGBTQ+) youth, are overrepresented in homeless populations and at high risk for negative experiences and outcomes in Broward County.
The FLITE Center joined forces with SunServe with support from Our Fund Foundation to launch TheNest, a transition to independent living project for a minimum of 25 LGBTQ+ youth in South Florida, and hired staff with comparable identities to LGBTQ youth. The Nest provides safe housing for LGBTQ+ youth to end their homelessness or homelessness risk and transition them to permanent supportive housing.
The Nest team delivers emergency shelter, subsidized housing, case management, and life coaching. This will break the cycle of vulnerability, risk, and homelessness by providing LGBTQ+ youth with a support network that fosters their well being, promotes self sufficiency and facilitates their success.
Recognizing that the entire LGBTQ community has the right to quality care, SunServe ’ s mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth, adults and seniors in the greater South Florida metropolitan area.
FLITE Center offers comprehensive and seamless service delivery for youth and young adults ages 13 to 23 involved in the child welfare system. Annually, FLITE Center helps more than 2,000 youth aging out of foster care, chronically homeless youth, human trafficking survivors and LGBTQ+ displaced youth with food, medical care, employment and educational options and, when possible, with safe, affordable housing opportunities.

The National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) was officially chartered by the state of New York on June 1, 1960, but its actual beginnings were in the imagination and visions of three fundraisers in New York City Benjamin Sklar of Brandeis University, William R. Simms of the National Urban League and Harry Rosen of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. They agreed to form a national society of fundraisers but realized they would need an individual with greater prestige and more recognizable credentials to provide leadership. Dr. Abel Hanson of Columbia Teacher’s College was their candidate.
With the charter, the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) was born.
The purposes the founders had in mind for the organization were outlined in the Articles of Incorporation:
• To aid fundraisers in the performance of their professional duties
• To unite those engaged in the profession of fundraising
• To formulate, promote and interpret to organizations, agencies and the public the objectives of fundraising and the role of those who practice it
• To promote and maintain high standards of public service and conduct
• To exchange ideas and experiences and to collect and disseminate information of value to fundraisers and the public
• To promote, sponsor and encourage study, research and instruction in the field of fundraising by means of courses in established institutions of learning and by other means
• To encourage and sponsor the granting of awards and fellowships in recognized institutions of learning for study and research in the field of fundraising

Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life.
To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:
To be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
To have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.
To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the American Association of Fund Raising Council (AAFRC), Association of Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). It has been endorsed by numerous organizations.
