PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD It is hard to believe that a year has passed since I took over as the Principal of the school. There were many activities and events conducted to enrich the learning of Andersonians and school life was made so fun and exciting that one barely noticed the passing of time. Which event or activity in 2016 left the deepest impression on your mind? How has it enhanced your learning experience in school? For me, the highlight last year was definitely the inaugural Education and Career Guidance (ECG) week held during the Sabbatical session. To enhance our graduating students’ understanding of their personalities and interests, students underwent DISC profiling and participated in a forum discussion with industry professionals where they listened to the professionals’ experiences and asked questions to deepen their knowledge of the world of work. An exhibition was also held to allow students to learn more about the post-secondary education landscape and the various pathways that they can consider. Another memorable event was the Teachers’ Day Celebration. Our students paid tribute to their teachers through songs, dances and games. The performances were so impressive that the audience sat unflinchingly throughout, mesmerised by what they had watched. A few of our teachers also came together to produce a highly entertaining video production, which brought much laughter to the audience. The event was truly a good showcase of our students’ and teachers’ gifts and talents.
2 ANDSS Yearbook 2016
These wonderful experiences would not have been made possible without the careful planning and hard work of our teachers. Under the guidance of our teachers, our students continued to perform very well in both academic and non-academic areas. On the academic front, our students achieved excellent results in the National GCE Examinations. Our L1B5 score for GCE ‘O’ level examinations and ELMAB3 score for GCE ‘N’ level examinations have improved. In the co-curricular area, our CCAs have consistently garnered awards at zonal and national competitions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all teachers for their commitment and dedication. In addition, I would also like to thank our School Advisory Committee members, parents and friends of Anderson for their constant support. Our Anderson Family would not be complete without your presence and contributions. Finally, I thank the Publicity Team for coming up with the Yearbook. There is no better way in reminiscing about the past than to read the Yearbook. Enjoy the Yearbook! Mrs Tan May Teng Principal

Parents Support Group (PSG) Anderson Parent Support Group 2016 was a fruitful year for Anderson PSG! As always PSG brought together many parents, had bonding sessions for the parents and children where we had loads of fun and a great time together. It was indeed heart-warming to see participants so forthcoming and supportive. First event of the year the Anderson Food Fair 2016 “Bon Appetit” held on 16 May 2016 was a great success. Anderson canteen was abuzz on that very day with Chinese, Malay, Vegetarian, Exotic, Snacks and Drink stalls. The enthusiastic parents of Andersonians came into action. With months of preparation by Food Fair Committee members, parents served out a sumptuous spread of food spaghetti, curry chicken, udon, laksa, fried chicken wings, refreshing drinks and delightful desserts. The committee and PSG@Anderson would like to thank all Andersonians and teachers their support. We specifically want to thank our parents including some PSG alumni who supported us through their generous donations and precious time. And we are proud that the proceeds of a total of $10K from the food fair went to the school’s needy students.
Our hearts overflow with gratitude to everyone involved in making this such a great event. PSG joined the school to celebrate Racial Harmony Day in the most meaningful way. Students savoured the yummy food from different ethnic groups set up by the parents and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. In October, two Parent-Child bonding activities, Terrarium and Clay Moulding workshop received overwhelming responses. Parents and their child picked up new skill in gardening and had better understanding in taking care of indoor plants in Terrarium class while Clay Moulding Workshop helped to build patience. All of us were very delighted to see our mini sheep done at the end of the session. There were opportunities to meet the school leaders for rich dialogues to understand school policies and discussion on good parenting. The year ended well and we hope to continue to add value to Anderson in the coming 2017 serving as Anderson PSG!

Our Goals: 1. Equip students with problem solving skills so that they have the abilities to apply the skills across all disciplines. 2. Engage students and build a link between textbook knowledge and real world application. Descriptions of Events/Achievements: This year the Design and Technology unit has embarked on an integrative approach with the lower secondary students in establishing collaborative programs with the IPW committee and the Service and Student Leadership committee. Applying basic design and technology knowledge and design thinking skills to solve real world problems, the secondary one students work on the theme “Classroom Hack” to improve their learning environment. Secondary two students work on the theme “Greying Population (Elderly Needs)” to increase awareness of the greying population to design and make a product to improve the quality of life for the elderly. All Upper Secondary D&T students undergo a series of learning activities that aim to infuse qualitative design experiences as added value to ignite the spark of innovation. Students are also exposed to diverse design skills, incorporating methods and design prototyping techniques to achieve the desired results of a holistic design programme.

Music Unit
Our Vision: To empower students to be health-conscious and discerning consumers; enabling them to better manage their lives for the present and the future.
Music at Anderson Secondary School continues to be enjoyed by students of all levels. The General Music programme is designed to develop musical skills such as instrumental playing, aural listening skills and the knowledge of reading musical notation and creating musical scores.
Our Goals: To equip students with lifeskills that optimise their resources of food, finance and time to meet their physical ,mental, social and economic needs. Hopes and Dreams for 2016: Provide opportunities for students 1. To participate in more NFS-related competitions 2. To showcase their skills 3. To engage the community
It is strongly governed by the musical world of a student, as inspired by Patricia Campbell. Students are articulate in the arts and are confident musical talents who are given various platforms to showcase their artistic skills. The approach, as proposed by Campbell, considers a student’s musical experiences in her environment and this pedagogy has been widely practised in countries as Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Valuing students’ personal musical interests and having them work through a variety of non-formal and informal learning styles is synonymous with the adoption of this pedagogy. Modes of assessment are varied in content, form and structure. Assessment is designed to ensure that there is engagement with sustained music-making activities. As the students are the best appraisers of the teaching they receive, the teachers behind the General Music Programme thrive on the feedback, encouragement and thus assessment is designed to cater to all students from all streams. Music as a GCE O level subject is also offered to interested upper secondary students.

English Department Our Vision: A confident speaker and critical thinker who respects others and is well informed about world issues.
Descriptions of Events/Achievements: This has been another busy but rewarding year for staff and students in the English Department.
Our Goals: At the end of four years of English Language education, the Anderson Graduate will have the following qualities:
Drama based on Reading All Secondary 1 and 2 students are exposed to the Drama based on Reading Programme. In these 2 years of fun-filled drama games and activities and stepping into the world of their Literature texts through process drama, Andersonians are equipped with real-world skills such as teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. Inevitably, students become more confident presenters and curious thinkers. This year, the Sec 1 students were exposed to drama games and were able to experience Literature come to life through exploration of a short story, “Adeline Ng Ai Choo”, from their text Little Ironies. Likewise, the Sec 2s learnt about an element of Literature, conflict, from another short story from Little Ironies, “Monster”, through drama games and process Drama. They also had a chance to explore the skill of improvisation and theatre sports in Term 3 & Term 4.

Literature Festival - Shakespeare’s Birthday On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Upper Secondary Literature students whisked the school population off to the settings of the Bard’s most celebrated works onboard our own Literature Airways. Inspired by the Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet, the Secondary Three Literature students put up two wildly creative takes on Portia’s suitors, and on Shakespeare’s favourite themes of anger and jealousy in the hilarious ‘Lomi Yeo and Julie Yeh’. The Secondary Four Literature students presented an energetic and passionate staging of Julius Caesar’s momentous death -- one of the most memorable scenes that Shakespeare has ever penned, open to interpretations that are at once shocking and grimly satisfying. Arts Festival During the Arts Festival, the Secondary Three Literature students performed a psychological thriller entitled ‘The ALIVE museum’ - where ‘selling your soul’ to a job takes on a literal meaning. With statues that come alive and a sinister curator who is on a constant lookout for a new assistant, the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves. UNSW Competitions In Term 3 this year, our students participated in the Writing Competition as well as the English Competition organised by University of New South Wales. We are so proud that in the Writing category, 170 students participated, 8 students achieved High Distinction and 39 students achieved Distinction awards. Humanities Department Our Vision: “Nurturing responsible and rooted global citizens who can think critically, communicate persuasively and create compassionately” Our Goals: 5 Goals 1. Building Relevancy 2. Building CPA (Engaging Content, Pedagogy and Assessment) 3. Building Innovative Practices 4. Building Teachers’ Capacity 5. Building Quality Relationship
24 ANDSS Yearbook 2016
Building Relevancy In line with our central goal of building relevance to the school community, the Humanities Department adopted multiple approaches to connect students’ learning to the real world. Students were able to hone their critical thinking skills through experiential learning experiences, both within and outside of the classroom, through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. In this way, the department reasserted the continuing relevance of the Humanities in a volatile and changing world. Building Engaging Content, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) and Innovative Practices We have done away with summative assessment for Secondary 1 in the Mid-Year Examinations and focused on alternative modes of assessment such as creating websites on WIX for rainforests. For the Secondary 2 NA students, they were tasked with creating a board game and assessed based on the game-creating process. The history unit continued with Historical Investigations with improvements made to the rubrics.
In terms of pedagogy, the Humanities teachers anchored thinking routines such as See-Think-Wonder and 5W1H in our inquiry lessons. Upper Secondary teachers also incorporated Socratic questioning techniques to develop critical thinking. Using real world case studies and examples, Humanities teachers continue to make our subjects relevant for students. The Secondary 1 to 4 Geographical Investigations Field Trips continue to challenge our students to demonstrate inquiry skills in the real world context. On top of that, we challenge students through the application of syllabus content to current affairs and global issues. Our students had the opportunity to participate in the Harmony and the Post National Day Dialogue. In addition, selected students with outstanding performance participated in subject-based competitions and did the school proud by clinching awards in the NUS Geography Challenge, National Library Board History Investigation Challenge and the Ngee Ann Finance Uncovered Now Trail. Humanities teachers constantly update our practices to ensure that we remain innovative and creative. As such, the Geography unit embarked on discovery/risky fieldwork, by shifting the ownership over the investigations from teacher to student.
Building Teachers’ Capacity and Quality Relationships This year, the department has been given numerous opportunities to attend relevant programmes and courses to learn how to lead in peer sharing and research. These opportunities and platforms help to develop their abilities through training, mentoring and sharing. During school attachment experience, Mdm Lenny mentored Geography undergraduate teaching scholars. In addition, the more experienced teachers mentored the younger teachers to carry out lesson study, action research and other professional learning projects. Mrs Amy Ang and Mr Hazmi shared on Historical Investigation while Mrs Merlin Tan shared on Geography Investigation with other schools. Mdm Jane Cheng worked with other teachers to use the concepts in Making Thinking Visible in our classrooms. Teachers in the department were given physical and mental space to brainstorm on how to make their subject relevant during departmental meetings. The department created opportunities for cross discipline collaboration. Physical Education Department Our Vision: Andersonians who lead a healthy and physically active lifestyle Our Goals: Promoting a lifelong healthy lifestyle through sports, physical activity and outdoor education. It was another eventful year for the dynamic team in the Anderson PE department in 2016. The annual cross country returned to our familiar venue at Bishan Park. The Sports Carnival was held again this year together with the Arts Fest. Having the Sports Carnival in school allowed for greater flexibility to have a good mix of games, sports and recreational activities which saw a record number of participants. These sports events provided platforms for all to engage in healthy physical activities and display of the Andersonian sportsmanship together with our dynamic staff! Our Sec 3 students went on an adventure camp at Camp Challenge during the Anderson Sabbatical which provided them with opportunities to experience rugged activities, teamwork, resilience etc. The Anderson PE programme has been reviewed and aligned to the new MOE syllabus, with students learning a wide variety of sports and games (ranging from invasion, net barrier & striking/fielding). To measure the effectiveness of the PE programme, students are assessed in the Physical and Affective domain in addition to the Cognitive domain. In the Physical domain, students are required to demonstrate sports skills and team play which they have learnt during PE lessons. Lower secondary games assessment require students to be able to demonstrate fundamental sports skills such as passing/receiving, shooting, dribbling etc while upper secondary students be able to demonstrate advanced skills such as offensive/defensive games strategies. In the Affective domain, students are credited or penalised based on positive or negative behaviour shown during PE lessons. A student, for example, will earn points if he demonstrates sportsmanship, teamwork etc during games or be penalised if he demonstrates selfishness, negativity etc during games Our students were given opportunities to learn new sports such as Bowling and Tennis during the Sports Education Programme which were conducted as post exam activities. The department in collaboration with SWBC also organised a bowling competition for staff at the Civil Service Club where our staff had plenty of fun! Hopes and Dreams for 2016: Students learn new skills in various sports and game and be involved and have passion for various physical activities in a safe environment.

Science Department
As a community of science teachers, we value openness and embrace a growth culture that is committed to professional development. We aim to exemplify our school values of being caring in action, noble in character, daring in our dreams and excellent in all our endeavours when working with teachers and students.
Science Enrichment Program @Anderson Anderson continues to groom students into thinkers and innovators by immersing its pupils in a series of engaging science activities. Beginning in Secondary 1, pupils attend a series of workshops on clean water technologies conducted in school as part of their science enrichment program. Through these lessons, pupils learnt how different technologies work to bring clean water to consumers. Secondary 2 pupils focused on alternative energy where they had fun learning what alternative energies are available and how they work. These skills will help our students be more aware of the importance of a sustainable environment and how science can help make it happen.
Our Goals: 1. Plan and implement lessons that are differentiated to students’ needs so that they can excel 2. Plan and deliver programmes that allow students to explore their interests in science, especially in STEM education. 3. Plan and implement learning experiences in and out of the classroom such that students enjoy the learning process. 4. Develop teachers through regular observations, selfevaluation and feedback, and grounded in the most recent academic and pedagogical research.
Centre of Excellence (COE) Activities As the Cluster Centre of Excellence for Science, Anderson hosted many school visitors as they come for science competitions and workshops. A major annual event for the Science Department this year was the hosting of the 15th Elementz Science Project Competition and Exhibition. This year, the event saw a total of 96 teams from secondary school (Lower Secondary levels) and primary schools showcasing their research projects at the school hall. We also submitted three of our best projects from among the Sec 2 Science Research Projects Programme and one of them won a silver award.
Our Vision: The Anderson Science Department is committed to helping our students EXCEL in the area of science education. We are dedicated in providing a science curriculum that allows students to EXPLORE their interests and at the same time ENJOY the learning process.
Science Competitions Throughout the year, Andersonians took part in a great variety of science-related competitions. The following are some examples of these competitions.

Character and Citizenship Education Education Career Guidance (ECG) In alignment to the overarching objectives of Character & Student Guidance Committee (CSG) and Education Career Guidance (ECG), there have been a few new initiatives this year to ensure that students have been equipped with the necessary knowledge to make responsible and informed decisions. The inaugural ECG Fair which took place in Term 1 during Sabbatical week seeks to empower our graduating cohort with such decision-making abilities. The 3-day program consists of a panel discussion featuring speakers from various industries, concurrent course talks and exhibition booths to share education and career information. More than 15 tertiary education partners participated in this fair, either through exhibition booths or conducting interactive sessions for students to glean further insights and make informed choices based on their interests, abilities and passion. Apart from that, students who were keen in applying for the Early Admission Exercise also learnt how to present themselves through preparatory sessions for resume writing and interviews. Last but not least, in order to steer students towards the correct pathway in acquiring a positive attitude towards learning, we have also kick-started the Work Attachment Programme, which is part of Time Out Programme. Over a short span of 3 days, the experiences that the students have gained through this partnership with our industry stakeholders have been valuable.
32 ANDSS Yearbook 2016
Time-Out Programme 2016 The Time-Out Programme (TOP) is a ground-up initiative, seeking to develop selected Secondary 2 and 3 students to reach their full potential, which in turn will motivate them to excel in their studies and other non-academic pursuits. The time-out approach puts emphasis on the enhancement of character development and social-emotional skills, so as to help students to overcome personal, family or social barriers that confound their motivation for and performance in learning. In 2016, the TOP students went through a series of character development programmes and activities conducted by external trainers. Through authentic hands-on activities such as a 2D1N camp during the June holidays, Archery Tag, bowling and Dialogue in the Dark @Ngee Ann Polytechnic, students were provided with a platform to develop their character, attitude and life-skills that will benefit them in the long run. We also partnered with various companies such as Halogen, Acorn Training and Warm Buns to send selected students for a 3-day work attachment during the June holidays. This experience has taught our TOP students invaluable lessons in developing work attitudes and appreciating the importance of interpersonal relationships. In addition, students also attended weekly study sessions, dedicated to purely doing their homework and revision. Students who have undergone this programme found it useful in aiding them to have a structured environment to revise their work individually or as a group.
Heritage and Citizenship Education 2016 2016 was an exciting year for Heritage and Citizenship Education. This year, Andersonians commemorated the four National Education commemorative events in style and to great success. We learned more about Total Defence through an immersive assembly programme, and celebrated International Friendship Day with presentations by our international students about their home countries, and our annual Anderson NATAS fair, which featured the learning experiences of our overseas school trips in 2015. This year’s Racial Harmony Day was also replete with fun and food, as students enjoyed traditional games and scrumptious local delights. Our National Day Observance Ceremony and Concert also emphasised student participation, as students participated in a memorable parade with our first ever civilian contingent, and in a meaningful meditation on future Singapore. Andersonians were also given the opportunity to extend their learning to beyond the classroom, as they enjoyed a rich variety of learning journeys. During Orientation week, the Secondary 2 and Secondary 4 students visited significant national institutions and local museums like the Navy Museum, Tuas Incinerator Plant, Marina Barrage, and the newly opened National Gallery. In addition, our Secondary 2 students also led the way by participating enthusiastically in the Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail, where they were guided by their own classmates to understand the rich history of the community around them. The Heritage and Citizenship (HCE) Ambassadors were instrumental in the planning and execution of our National Education commemorative events, taking up the roles of presenters, emcees, backstage hands, and facilitators. They led the way in sharing about Singapore at our weekly sharings, and in learning about future Singapore at The Future of Us Exhibition. During June, they also took on the roles of photojournalists, as they put photography and interview skills together to present engaging narratives in their inaugural exhibition ‘What Makes a Singaporean’. In addition, Torres Jelaena Lee and Eunice Chong were selected to participate in the week-long South East Asia Leadership Network (SEALNET) Youth Leadership Summit 2016, where they had the rare opportunity to learn alongside international college-level students about service leadership. As 2016 draws to a close, the Ambassadors will embark on their annual day camp, where they will plan for the next year’s work in the organisation and facilitation of their peers’ learning on our nation’s heritage, while imbuing the sense of belonging and citizenship within each and every Andersonian.

Service & Student Leadership Service & Student Leadership (SSL) committee aims to develop Andersonians into a caring community of thinkers, innovators and leaders who inspire and serve. Hence, the SSL focuses on developing students who are caring in action and noble in character. With the overarching objectives in mind, the school continued and sought out new collaboration opportunities with the community partners. For example, the Secondary 2 students piloted a Values In Action (VIA) Programme in collaboration with Family Central, Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Pacific Health Centre. In alignment with the VIA theme of “Bonding with the Community, and with the rapidly ageing population in Singapore, the programme focused mainly on befriending the elderly. As the students might not have much experience interacting with the elderly, NYP students gave talks and facilitated the students on how to communicate with the elderly. The Secondary 2 students took over the lead and planned their own VIA activities for the respective beneficiaries. Mainly, students came up with performance items, prepared snacks and games to befriend the elderly from the Pacific Health Centre. The elderly were enthusiastic and participative during the sessions. In also the pilot phase of the Intergeneration Learning Programme (ILP), two classes also designed and planned three different classes for the elderly to participate in to remain socially active. These classes were Social Media, Line Dance and English-Dialect. Students planned the 4 sessions on their own, drafted lesson and choreographed dance moves. The sign up rate was overwhelming, and definitely encouraging. The elderly also showed interest and have since requested for more similar lessons to continue their life-long learning in the near future!

Information, Communications and Technology Department Our Vision: To be an institution that leverages on new and emerging technologies so that learning can take place anytime and anywhere as well as for administrative excellence. Our Goals: 1. To create a pervasive and vibrant ICT school culture. 2. To integrate ICT into curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. 3. To provide professional development in the area of ICT for teachers. 4. To provide ICT support and resources that will facilitate effective teaching and learning. 5. To provide platforms for sharing of best practices and collaborative opportunities among teachers. ICT has always been harnessed as a tool to facilitate self-directed (SDL) and collaborative learning (CoL) for students and teachers in our school. Since 2011, we have used a learning management system (LMS) as a one-stop location for students and teachers to interact and work collaboratively. In-house training was provided for both students and teachers to use the new LMS effectively. Various departments have designed and implemented a series of student SDL and CoL activities. Our Lower Sec Computer Education (CE) programme continues to equip our students with baseline ICT skills such as word processing, presentation and spreadsheet to meet the demands of the 21st century. The Sec 1s were taught how to navigate and use our LMS for teaching and learning as well as for administrative purposes. They were also given refresher sessions on Microsoft Office applications. These refresher sessions serve to help them recollect what they have learnt in primary school to prepare them for a more rigorous programme in Sec 2. They have also learnt how to create engaging presentations using an online tool called Prezi. Our Sec 2 students learnt how to use online tools such as Google Apps for collaboration, creation of surveys, data collection and processing. They also learnt photo-editing using free online tools such as Fotor.com. This year, we participated in IDA’s Code For Fun programme where we exposed our Sec 1 Normal Academic and Normal Technical students to coding. They went through a 5 x 2h training programme to learn how to code using Arduino as a platform. They learnt how to incorporate their programming to control self-built robots. Our teachers also went through a similar programme to understand what the students will learn in the programme. In terms of external sharing sessions, we had 3 teams of teachers selected to present in the N3 Cluster ICT Symposium 2016. These 3 teams were from the PE, Science and Mathematics departments respectively. Hopes and Dreams for 2016: For 2016, the department hopes to promote coding to our students as it is a very useful skill to have for the 21st century. This is the reason we embarked on the Code for Fun programme with IDA. We also hope to build up the competencies of new teachers joining the school to empower them to use ICT as a tool to make teaching and learning more effective. We accomplish this through providing customised trainings for them.

Established more than a century ago in Singapore, The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has come to be a premier uniformed youth organisation supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of Singapore. Today the National Cadet Corps (NCC) is one of the biggest UGs in the MOE family of Uniformed Groups with a wide variety of programmes ranging from adventure trainings to overseas trips. Goals: Anderson NCC seeks to instil 21st century competencies by providing our cadets with a strong leadership foundation. With our wide range of fun and challenging militaryrelated activities, we are committed towards developing resourceful, responsible, resilient leaders and team players with a strong sense of rootedness to Singapore. Achievements: Apart from the regular physical trainings, military-related drills, grading and competitions, cadets were given opportunities to bond and exercise through various sports, and upgrade their skills through various courses such as basic survival skills, orienteering, technical handling and self-defence. In one such course, cadets undergo basic self-defence training and have even hosted and conducted basic self-defence workshops for other school’s NCC units and various uniformed groups such as the Girl Guides and Scouts. Cadets were given opportunities to hone their planning and organisational skills in preparing for the school Open House, National Day Parade and NCC Day. In addition to these, cadets learnt to look beyond themselves in the planning of various Valuein-action projects such as TOUCH: Young Arrows, Push and Sit challenge, Nerf War and Kickboxing that benefitted beneficiaries such as Relief Mission, Touch Community Services, Parkinson Society Singapore and Anderson’s Needy Students Fund. These trainings and activities serve to develop cadets holistically, in particular, their civic and social awareness, sense of pride and responsibility, personal confidence, physical fitness and self-defence. Anderson NCC continues to uphold its standards by participating in competitions and events held by NCC HQ including Mini League Tournament, Precision Drill Squad Competition, Freestyle Drill Competition, Live Range and Shooting Competition. Our cadets participate in courses and camps such as Camp Forge, Camp Steel and Senior Specialist Course to develop leadership and team-building skills which are essentials when organizing school activities. In 2016, Anderson NCC has also received the Silver Award for the annual Best Unit Competition. Hopes and Dreams for 2017: Anderson National Cadet Corp strives to develop in our students the importance of integrity, a sense of belonging to the school unit, improve their standard of fitness, mature into thinking leaders who are able to work cooperatively and to carry out their activities with a sense of purpose.
