The month of May heralds a big change over in the world of safari camps. Those camps that have been closed during the rainy season, make their final preparations behind the scenes for the new season.
This is particularly so in Zambia. The heavy rains make many of the National Parks totally isolated due to vast wetlands expansion, flooding of rivers and ultimately non-existent roads. However, the after effects of this watery invasion, is the most spectacular lush green burst of life, the reappearance of huge numbers of animals and the dusting off of safari vehicles ready for this season’s safari enthusiasts.

RWANDA: THE FULL PICTURE Whilst the Gorillas are of course the star attraction in Rwanda the country is far from a ‘one trick pony’, there is so much more to see and do in this remarkable country. When visiting Rwanda it would be a real shame to miss out on its two other national parks, the beautiful Lake Kivu and its experience aspects of its vast historical and cultural heritage.
Notable plains game include elephant, buffalo, topi, zebra, waterbuck, roan antelope and eland. Other antelope are duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, bushbuck and impala. Of the primates, olive baboons, vervets and the secretive blue monkey are seen during the day, with bush babies often seen on night drives.
Akagera National Park is located in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, combining well with Nyungwe and the Volcanoes NP to create a great safari circuit, as it is home to many large plains game species as well as species restricted to the papyrus swamps such as the Sitatunga and the much sought-after Shoebill Stork.
It provides the perfect location to relax and enjoy lakeside recreation during a tour of Rwanda. With a surface area of some 2730 km2, Lake Kivu sits at almost 1500m above sea level. Perfectly safe to swim in, the water has a warm temperature of 23-27o all year round. Sports and activities include fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing and boat rides.
Of the larger predators only leopard, hyaena and side-striped jackal are Nkungwe National Park is located in South West Rwanda, Nyungwe is surely currently still present – but exciting one of the world’s most beautiful and plans are underway to reintroduce lions, as well as black rhino in 2015, pristine mountain rainforests. It’s which will restore Akagera’s ‘Big 5’ believed to be one of Africa’s oldest, status, so watch this space! staying green even through the Ice Age, which explains its diversity. Lake Kivu is one of the Africa’s Great Home to habituated chimpanzees and Lakes, surrounded by magnificent 12 other primates species including a mountains and has deep emerald healthy population of habituated green waters. The lake is dotted with Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus, it’s often uninhabited islands and from also a birder’s paradise with over 300 both land and water, the scenery is species, including 16 endemics. simply stunning.
