Testimonies on 20 Years of Christian Action Congratulations on the occasion of your 20th Anniversary! As you enter your third decade of ministry we want to express our sincere appreciation for setting a Biblical example for us to follow and positive goals to which we can aspire.
Rev Erlo Stegen KwaSizabantu Mission
We have observed two decades of brave ministry done by Africa Christian Action. The road has not been easy and ACA has been through many battles. Only those willing to be "there where the action is" face the criticisms and anger of the world. The risk is greater, but so is the reward. May God lead you by His Spirit and use you mightily in the years to come. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 Rev Bill Bathman Chairman, Frontline Fellowship
The name says it all – Africa: the sphere defined (but the problems exposed and the principles to confront them could apply worldwide). Christian: This identifies the foundation on which the whole enterprise rests and the worldview it projects. Action: challenges us to put feet to our faith. The inspiring articles in each issue of your magazine motivate us to not simply be hearers of the Word, but doers also. The uncompromising message is, "Don't just sit there and moan over the situation facing us as believers, but get off your gluteus maximus and do something about it." Amen, to that! But it doesn't stop with the challenge. Each issue of CA is packed full of practical ways of 'how to' intelligently engage the forces opposed to the Gospel and defeat them, reminding us that, "greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." Congratulations on 20 years of Christian activism. We are proud of you for so fearlessly standing against all ungodliness and so courageously honouring Christ in all areas of life. Miriam Cain, Director Abba House, former ACA Co-ordinator Thank you for the faithful witness the Africa Christian Action team has been across the sub-continent of Africa! I believe that the seed that ACA has sown will bear fruit in the corporate life and laws of South Africa. ACA has been at the forefront of the fight against many moral problems in South Africa and many people would be blissfully unaware of the dangers that surround us without the ministry of ACA. Certainly in my own life, my work at ACA was instrumental in developing my thinking on Biblical ethics. One of the things I learned was that extremism is dangerous and that balance mustn't be mistaken for fence-sitting! The Bible teaches both Grace and Truth, and we need to show grace and love to the sinner without bending God's Truth. We are called to have boldness in proclaiming the Truth of God's Word but also tenderness in practically showing God's love to those hurting. I believe the tragedy of abortion demonstrates this so well. We are called to take

a stand and say that abortion kills babies and hurts women, but we are also called to care for the woman caught in a crisis pregnancy or suffering as a result of abortion. Galatians 6:1 says: “If someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.” Pride and self-righteousness are also sins that need to be repented of. We have all sinned and we all need a Saviour! Let us not, by our attitude, slam the door in the face of someone needing help after an abortion. Another important way we can care, is to consider adopting a baby whose mother chose to give birth and release her baby instead of aborting her baby.
lives would be saved both here on earth and for eternity. May the Lord bless and extend the influence of Africa Christian Action in the next twenty years! Charl van Wyk Africa Christian Action: When Peter Hammond explained the vision of Salt Shakers at a Saturday morning conference in a Cape Town church, I was dumbstruck. The reason? I had been thinking about the need for just such an organisation—one that would lead the Christian community in its quest for making known the tenets of true freedom found only in obedience to the Word of God. This happened 20 years ago. Since then, having
Many Christian individuals around the country were doing what they could to stem the onslaught of sin that seemed to flood into every facet of life. What was needed was a concerted, organized effort by Christians to encourage believers to “...have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Ephesians 3:24 Prayer, Strategy & Action Having started by mailing out monthly packages with Projects for groups to engage in with prayer, Bible study and action, Africa Christian Action soon jumped into the age of new technology and mightily expanded its effectiveness. Through one email, thousands of concerned Christians were reached and moved to prayerfully act on an issue of importance; one press

release would lead to 15 media interviews, and another to letters to the editor published in numerous newspapers around the country. Networking One of the greatest characteristics of Africa Christian Action is its networking. Over the years it's teamed with many other Christian organizations in working toward the Lordship of Christ being established and His will being done on Earth as it is in Heaven. It is not a question of what wonderful things we have done, but rather what the Lord has allowed us to be involved in for His honour and glory. The Media Takes Notice The liberal media, Pa r l i a m e n t a n d l a r g e corporations became incensed at the show of force by the “small minority of radical Christians”. A pornography magazine editor in a telephone call threatened to expose “the Christians” in South Africa as we worked towards seeing his magazine file for b a n k r u p t c y, w h e n Christians refused to support businesses advertising in porn publications. Front-page news in a national newspaper showed Parliament bemoaning the fact that 80 percent of medical staff would not take part, or be associated with, abortions in government hospitals. Retail corporations paid heed when Christians refused to shop at their stores until all sexually explicit material had been removed. One front-page newspaper article quoted a porn magazine editor complaining that a “couple of old ladies in a dark room” had a vendetta against his magazine. We pointed out that it was a bunch of young men who were doing this, in the light, and for all to see. Christians stand up Abortion facilities were exposed. Marches on Parliament brought about great changes in decision making as God's Name being included in the new constitution was debated. Christian radio stations were saved from being closed down by government “regulators.” Legalization of prostitution was halted. Gambling joints were shuttered. And same-sex marriages were warned about years before they were legalized. Lives were saved as Christians took to the streets with banners proclaiming “Abortion kills babies” and handed out tracts explaining God's heart on the horrific murder of the unborn.
Women's Day outreaches, plays outside Parliament a n d p r o - l i f e demonstrations hit the national television news, newspapers, radio and magazines. For over 15 years, our radio programme, Salt and Light, on Radio Tygerberg has been an encouragement to many who thought that giving up was the only option when confronted with such an avalanche of sin and chaos. One pastor mentioned that many of them listen to Salt and Light to keep abreast of what is going on in the Christian community and socio-political arena in South Africa. May the Lord bless and keep Christian Action so that we truly will see His Kingdom come and His will being done. May we rejoice in yet another 20 years of service to King Jesus. British Royal Mail is issuing a special commemorative stamp. Even the British Broadcasting Corporation will show an hour long documentary. The Duke of Edinburgh launched the official celebrations in the banqueting house at Whitehall. Innumerable websites have been set up to celebrate the Authorised Version. Foundational There is no doubt that the KJV Bible is the most beloved and respected Bible in all of history. It has an ageless magnificence, a beauty of phrase and poetical arrangement which is absolutely unique. It is not possible to comprehend the history of th e En g lis h s pe akin g peoples without understanding the great KJV translation. The KJV Bible has most certainly been far more influential than even Shakespeare in the development and spread of English worldwide. Superlatives The KJV attracts
superlatives. It is: the most important book in the English language, religion and culture, the most celebrated book throughout the English speaking world, the most enduring embodiment of Scripture in the English language and the gold standard by which all other Bible translations are evaluated. The KJV is the most pre-eminent Bible translation of all time. Without any doubt, this is the greatest example of English literature ever produced. No book ever had such a great impact on the development of a language and culture as the KJV has had. Nor can any other Bible translation claim to have inspired so many Revivals and the launching of so many missionary movements as the KJV. Influential The KJV is the most influential version of the most influential Book in the world, in what has become the most influential language in the world. Bestseller Most Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms are KJV. Oxford University Press alone sells over 250,000 copies of the KJV every year, which it describes as “the most widely owned and used translation.”
William Tyndale was burned to death for translating the Bible into English. Christian Action

Before the KJV Pre-Reformation Bibles were mostly in Latin. This precluded ordinary people from hearing or understanding the Scriptures. King Alfred the Great did translate the

Gospels into Anglo Saxon. The Lindesfarne Gospels included Anglo-Saxon interlinear script written between the lines of the Latin text. Professor John Wycliffe of Oxford University translated the Latin Vulgate into English, publishing handwritten copies of the New Testament in 1380 and the Old Testament in 1382. However these were all only handwritten, few in number and inaccessible to the common man. The Printing Press The invention of the Printing Press by Johannes Gutenberg and the printing of the first book, a Bible in Latin, on a mechanical movable type printing press, made possible a revival of learning and education and a circulation of literature on a scale never before seen. This invention laid the groundwork for the Reformation in the 16th century. The Printing Press was often referred to as “The Reformer’s Friend, the Tyrant’s Foe!” Greek New Testament In 1516 the eminent scholar Erasmus published the Greek New Testament (the Textus Receptus). This Greek New Testament made available by Erasmus was used by William Tyndale to translate the New Testament into English. William Tyndale The first English New Testament to be translated from the original languages, and printed, was William Tyndale's work, which was first smuggled into England -

in 1526. In 1536, the Bible translator, William Tyndale was burned at the stake for this crime. Myles Coverdale William Tyndale's coworker, Myles Coverdale produced the official Great Bible of 1539 which was authorised by King Henry VIII “for reading aloud in churches”. The Great Bible was mostly the work of William Tyndale. Persecution The accession to the throne of England of the young Edward VI, a Protestant, gave unprecedented religious freedom and impetus to the translation of the Bible into English. The untimely death of King Edward and accession to the throne of Bloody Mary led to a reign of terror (1553 to 1558), in which hundreds of men, women and children were burned to death, including some of the most prominent Protestant Bible translators, teachers, preachers and theologians, even the Archbishop of C a n t e r b u r y, T h o m a s Cranmer, led many church (Continued on Page 10) Web: www.christianaction.org.za

leaders to flee to Switzerland for sanctuary. It is for that reason that the next Bible translation into English was the Geneva Bible, published in 1560. The Geneva Bible The Geneva Bible was a good scholarly work using o r i g i n a l Ro m a n t y p e , smaller fonts, and the familiar verse formats of today's Bibles. The Geneva Bible was in general use for over 60 years and was the Bible quoted by playwrights such as William Shakespeare. Bible of the Puritans The Geneva Bible was one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into the English language, preceding the KJV by 51 years. It was the th primary Bible of the 16 century Protestant movement and the Bible used by William S h ake s p e ar e , Ol i ve r Cromwell, John Milton, John Knox and John Bunyan in Pilgrims Progress. The Geneva Bible was the primary Bible of the Pilgrims who founded America and used by the Ironsides soldiers of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War.
The First Study Bible The Geneva Bible was the first mechanically printed, mass produced Bible, made generally available, direct to the public, with a variety of Scriptural study guides and aids (including woodcut illustrations, maps, charts and indexes). Therefore the Geneva Bible was the world's first Study Bible. Over 150 editions of the Geneva Bible were printed between 1560 and 1644. The Bishops Bible The official Bishops Bible was published in England in 1568. The Church of England issued the Bishops Bible, essentially a revision of the Great Bible, which was mostly based on William Tyndale's work. The Bishops Bible remained in use in the churches until the King James Bible was published in 1611. King James When Queen Elizabeth I died on 24 March 1603, the crown of England passed to her cousin James I, who had already been King of Scotland for many years. to his coronation in London as King James I of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, a delegation of Puritans presented to James the Millenary Petition, which had over 1,000 signatures representing 10% of the Clergy of England. This petition was the catalyst for the Hampton Court Conference. The Puritans The Puritans were loyal to the crown but they were Calvinists who insisted that England's Reformation had not gone far enough. Presbyterians The Presbyterians wanted to do away with the hierarchal structure of powerful bishops. They promoted instead a model of church administration under elders, or presbyters. The Pilgrims The Pilgrims were nonconformists, or separatists, who wanted the state out of church affairs altogether. Many of them would emigrate to North America. Parliament Parliament was eager to expand its power and the Puritans retained a significant influence and representation in Parliament. The Papists The Papists were the Roman Catholics who wanted the English church to be returned under the authority of the Pope. They were excluded from the translation process and attempted to assassinate King James and blow up Parliament in the foiled

Gunpowder Plot on 5 N o v e m b e r. T h i s i s remembered annually in the Guy Fawkes fireworks. The Privileged The privileged bishops had exceptional power and wealth. They had seats in the House of Lords and were determined to resist the Puritans, Presbyterians and Pilgrims. Hampton Court James took the Puritan petition seriously enough to call for a conference which took place in October 1603 at Hampton Court. This luxurious, one thousand roomed, estate just outside of London had originally been built by Cardinal Wolsey. Only four moderate representatives of the Puritan cause were invited to participate in the conference before the king at Hampton Court. The nine Bishops and Deans and the Privy Council were clearly prejudiced against the Puritans. King James delivered the opening address making clear that the doctrine and policy of the state church was not up (Continued on Page 11)

for evaluation, or reconsideration. He made no effort to hide his frustration with the Presbyterian model he had endured in Scotland. Those who had hoped that he would be sympathetic to the Presbyterian or Puritan cause had obviously misunderstood his intransigence on this issue.
his final word on the matter: “No bishop, no king!” Conform or Else! The king warned the Puritans: “If this be all your party has to say, I will make them conform themselves, or else I will harry them out of the land, or else do worse!”
A New Translation At this point Dr. John Reynolds, the President of Corpus Christi College of Oxford, a leader of the Puritan side in the Church of England, and one of the greatest scholars of his day, proposed a new translation of the Bible into English. King James responded warmly to this suggestion because he despised the then popular Geneva Bible. The king was troubled by the often revolutionary margin notes of the Geneva No Bishop – No King! Bible which spoke The king exploded in reply: extensively against corrupt “If you aim at a Scots presbytery and immoral kings. King James uttered should be produced by 50 o f t h e nation’s f i n e s t language scholars and he approved rules for carefully checking the results, including no marginal notes to be effected, but only for the explanation When asked by an African prince, what the secret of o f t h e Britain’s greatness was, Queen Victoria presented him with H e b r e w or a copy of the King James Bible. Why shouldn't the bishops govern jointly with a presbytery of their brethren, the pastors and ministers of the church.”

HATE SPEECH? Presently, in April 2011, Julius Malema, leader of the ANC Youth League, is standing trial in the Johannesburg High Court for singing the song “Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer” which he likes to chant at his political rallies. The action was brought against him by AfriForum, a civil rights organisation, and by the Transvaal Agricultural Union. 1) Malema claims that the offensive words are not hate speech, though previous court rulings did outlaw them as such. When one watches the TV news, a surreal picture presents itself. Julius Malema arriving at court, flanked by five body guards heavily armed with machine guns and accompanied by the ANC icons Winnie Mandela and Gwede Mantashe. A crowd of admirers gathered around the court is following the trial inside on a giant TV screen mounted on a truck outside. “An Action against the Revolution” Twenty-nine year old Malema claims that the words “Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer. Shoot the Boers, they
are rapists, they are cowards,” are harmless struggle lyrics, and Gwede Mantashe, Secretary General of the ANC, supports him in this. The press quotes Mantashe as saying, that whoever seeks to prevent the singing of this 'struggle song' is “tampering with the history of the country and the liberation movement.” The court case, he claims, is not about Julius Malema, but about “protecting the history and 2) heritage of the ANC.” Malema agrees. The court action, he says, is not so much an action against him as “an action against the ANC and against the revolution.” 3) The Killing of Farmers The fact, however, is that the killing of farmers has reached crisis proportions. W h e n E u g e n e Terre'Blanche (69), the leader of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, was murdered last Easter (3.4.2010) on his farm in Ventersdorp, he was the 3368 t h victim of this scourge since the African National Congress (ANC) came to power in 1994. In the year since his death a further 51 Farmers have
been murdered in 77 farm attacks, an average of more than 4 per month. Farmers are a highly endangered group, for the incidence of farm murders is 10 times higher than murders among other groups of South Africans and 700 times higher than killings elsewhere in the world. 4) A Charge of Genocide is laid before the World Court Earlier in April a member of the Verkennersbeweging van Suid-Afrika flew to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Holland, charging the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Government with Genocide, submitting documentation about the killing of farmers and demanding that the ANC be held responsible. AfriForum, too, has sought international help. It took the present dispute with Julius Malema to the United Nations.5) Even the international organisation G e n o c i d e Wa t c h h a s acknowledged that the killing of farmers in South Africa is in fact genocide. It
has graded these murders at level 5 of a scale of 8 levels, and classifies them as being perpetrated by “black racists,” against whom farmers have little protection since the abolition of the Commandos. 6) Civilised Standards Apart from Communist r e g i m e s , m o s t governments seek for peace and harmony among their subjects. Especially in the West, one of the fundamental principles of Christian civilisation has been the Great Commandment of Christ: “As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” (Luke 6:31) This commandment, if observed, guarantees respect for “human dignity.” If this principle is reversed, the peace of a nation is jeopardized. Julius Malema demands the right to sing: ”Kill the Boer!” But what if we all demanded such a “right?” What, if the Muslims would sing: “Kill the Christians,” or the Whites would sing: “Kill Malema. Kill the ANC youth league. They are rapists and cowards!” Would not those who presently (Continued on Page 13)

Hate Speech? (Continued from page 12)
demand indemnity for such things, be the first ones to condemn this as “hate speech?” And would not the judiciary of the whole world support them? When is hate speech not hate speech? Why, indeed, do we have a law against hate speech? Jesus said: “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew 5:21-22) When does hate speech not promote hate actions? “The tongue is a fire,” says James, “setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell…” (James 3:6) The sad spectacle of prominent ANC leaders (and some White experts) declaring in court that a call to murder is not, or may not be, a call to murder is amazing. Julius Malema is supported by two of the ANC's most prominent office bearers. There is Winnie Mandela whose tongue, in the 1980s, fanned the fires of cruel necklacings. “With our
tyres and our matches we shall liberate this country,” she had exclaimed. And then there is ANC Secretary Gwede Mantashe, who is also the Chairman of the South African Communist Party. Malema's murderous words, he says, are not hate speech. They should be allowed, in order to “protect the history and heritage of the ANC.” The Freedom Charter Malema is known to wholeheartedly endorse the ANC Freedom Charter, which states that “the Land shall be shared among those who work it!” This principle is the basis of Land Reform. It probably also motivates violent actions against farmers in order to drive them off their land. But land reform has not been all that successful. By the Government's own admission 90% of the farms given to land claimants are now derelict. Though in our churches we pray: “Give us this day our daily bread,” many people do not seem to worry about who provides t h i s b r e a d a n d h o w. According to an opinion poll only 66% of South African Blacks regard Malema's words as hate speech against food producers. What about the rest? Do they ever wonder
where the food for over 50 Million South Africans comes from, or even w h a t o u r neighbouring countries live on? Communism T h e Fr e e d o m C h a r t e r represents old style Communism. Many people regard Communism as a mere matter of politics. But Communism is a humanistic religion, a religion of hate and envy. Its philosophy has destroyed the peace and prosperity of many nations, and its policies have brought great countries to ruin. Its founder, Karl Marx, was a satanist. He said: “I wish to avenge myself against the One who rules above.” His disciple, Vladimir Lenin, was an atheist. He said: “We must hate. Hatred is the basis of Communism.” His instruments, the Soviets, declared: “Let us drive out the Capitalists from earth, and God from Heaven.” The first to be driven out were the farmers in Russia and the Ukraine, with the result that millions of people starved to death. Who knows, perhaps it all started with a song: “Kill the Kulak, kill the Farmer.” Let us not follow the same suicidal route. Let us guard against a continuous revolution. “Nation building” is greater and nobler than actions of envy and hate. Covetousness has caused more racism in South Africa today than ever existed in Apartheid times. We n e e d t o appreciate one another, encourage one another,
