Nicolas Standaert
By looking at China from the periphery, this study shows how European sources offer a unique way of expanding the knowledge about the gazette of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its interconnected history illustrates how the Chinese gazette, as trans lated by European missionaries, became a major source for reflec tions on state and society by Enlightenment thinkers.

These thirty-two studies, origi nally published between 1979 and 2007 by Joseph Baumgarten, a pioneer of the comparative study of Qumran and rabbinic halakhah, include both detailed studies of laws and legal texts and broader thematic discus sions of the nature of Qumran religion. This book conducts a study of contradictions and coherence in Targum Pseudo-Jonathan and suggests that the alleged contra dictions are ultimately given to resolution, once the greater con text of biblical and Jewish tradi tion is taken into consideration. This volume offers reflections on anti-Semitism, philo-Semitism and anti-Judaism in biblical scholarship from the 19th cen tury to the present. The authors invite us to prepare the way for scholarship that is mindful of its susceptibility to violence and hatred.

Rebecca J. Henzel, Leiden University “Bridging Discourses in the World of the Early Roman Empire” is a fitting description of both the religio-philosophical spirit of Plutarch and the task of bringing his writings into fruitful dialogue with the New Testament and Early Christian writings. The contributions in this volume explore various ways of how to do it. This book presents the first comprehensive survey of honor ary statues in Sicily. A wealth of previously unpublished material reconstructs the spatial and so cial contexts of honorary statues, offering a unique window on urbanism and society of the first Roman province.
In this volume an international team of early career and more established scholars explores the ways in which didactic poets of Greco-Roman antiquity use im agery, broadly defined, in order to convey their teaching.

Hans Holbein’s Triumphs (1532-1534), commis sioned for the headquarters of the Hanseatic League in London and Kano Naizen’s The Portuguese namban (‘foreigners’) painted in 1543 in Japan are representations of worlds of trade, where wealth, speculation, exploitation, poverty, curios ity, encounters and the exotic relate effortlessly. These worlds multiplied in Africa, the America’s, Asia and Europe as mercantile cultures met in a globalizing world. The Bourbon monarchs who ascended the Spanish throne in 1700 attempted to reform the colonial system they had inherited, and, in particular, to make administration more efficient and cost-effec tive. This book analyses one aspect of the Bourbon reforms, which was the efforts to transform frontier missions, to make the missions more cost-effective, and to accelerate the integration of indigenous peoples in northern Mexico to European cultural norms. In some instances, the Crown had funded missions for more than a century, but with mini mal results.

Private International Law Idealism, EclecticismPragmatism, Symeon C. Symeonides, Willamette University College of Law
Edited by Erika de Wet , Kathrin Scherr and Rüdiger Wolfrum
This book compares the two golden ages of private interna tional law (PIL): the first is the era of Story and Savigny in the nineteenth century, while the second comprises the last fifty years. The period between 1970 and 2020 has been one of rapid changes and dense legislative responses, exemplified by the adoption of over one hundred national PIL codifications and almost as many international or regional conventions and regula tions. These instruments provide a rich source for this book’s inci sive and instructive comparisons and a fertile ground for a reliable assessment of the progress of PIL as a discipline.

Geopolitics and International Relations
Grounding World Politics Anew
Although we live in a globalised world, territorially embedded factors are highly relevant in such do mains as security, economy, energy, environment, politics & diplomacy. Today’s analysts of world af fairs are often loosely referring to ‘geopolitics’, but do not always clearly define it. This book therefore offers a necessary framework: an introduction into the main components of geopolitical analysis, an overview of the main geopolitical schools of thought, as well as reflections on how technology and geopolitics affect each other in economy, en ergy and security.

Ministries of foreign affairs are prominent institu tions at the heart of state diplomacy. Although they have lost their monopoly on the making of national foreign policies, they still are the opera tors of key practices associated with diplomacy: communication, representation and negotiation. Often studied in a monographic way, ministries of foreign affairs are undergoing an adaptation of their practices that require a global approach. This book fills a gap in the literature by approaching ministries of foreign affairs in a comparative and comprehensive way.

This book approaches the religion and rituals of the pre-Islamic Arabian nomads using the Safaitic inscriptions. Unlike Islamic-period literary sources, this material was produced by practitioners of tra ditional Arabian religion; the inscriptions are eye witnesses to the religious life of Arabian nomads prior to the spread of Judaism and Christianity across Arabia. The author attempts to reconstruct this world using the original words of its inhabit ants, interpreted through comparative philology, pre-Islamic and Islamic-period literary sources, and the archaeological context.

This book applies a compara tive perspective to reconstruct the contemporary histories of Equatorial Guinea and Morocco. It explores the margins of the local Spanish cartographies to re size the effects of its colonisation in its small African empire.
In the period following the 2nd World War, Saudi Arabia – a curious fusion of medieval theocracy, unruly dictatorship and extrovert wealth - has been called a country of ‘superlatives.’ The mod ernisation of the Kingdom’s oil industry has been a smooth process: its oilfields are highly sophisti cated. However, social modernisation has not kept pace. ‘Reform’, long a preoccupation among the Peninsula’s leaders does not necessarily go hand in hand with religion.

The aim of this book is to ana lyze the problem of the intensity of forms in the late Middle Ages and to show how this debate eventually gave rise to a new metaphysical project in the 14th century: the project of quantify ing the different types of perfec tions existing in the universe –that is the project of “measuring being”.
This volume of essays on the philosopher John Sallis assesses his wide ranging and genuinely original contribution to philoso phy. Along with the response to the essays by Sallis, these essays indicate directions for the future of philosophy.

Edited by Daniel Vázquez , Mary Immaculate College, and A lberto Ross, Universidad Panamericana
This book assembles an international team of scholars to move forward the study of Plato’s con ception of time, to find fresh insights for interpret ing his cosmology, and to reimagine the Platonic tradition. How can one Jewish thinker’s natural law theory explain morality, divine commandments, and human ordinances; and how do we assess the consistency of that theory when it is mentioned in connection with such diverse areas? The answer lies in the changing meaning of reason in Novak’s writings.
