Understanding Singapore
Politics (2nd Edition)
by Bilveer Singh (National University of Singapore, Singapore) “One of the best all rounded introductions to the government and politics of Singapore. Its strength lies in its structural functionalist approach to expounding the subject. It starts by locating the governance of Singapore historically while also identifying key factors that constrain or enable political change in a post-independence setting. The middle of the book breaks down the institutions of official and quasiofficial governance in bite sized chapters and accessible language. I highly recommend it!”

Liberalism Unveiled
Forging a New Third Way in Singapore
by Bryan Cheang (King’s College London, UK & Adam Smith Centre, Singapore) & Donovan Choy (Adam Smith Centre, Singapore) “The debate on Singapore’s political economy has been too narrow, pitting an establishment defence of the status quo against a vaguely European-style social-democratic alternative. This book lays out an alternative: a limited government, free-market worldview of the classical liberal tradition. This view hardly figures in Singapore’s debate. It is time it did.”

Serving Singapore
My Journey
by V K Rajan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain) “V K Rajan has written a personal and fascinating account of his long career in the Singapore Civil Service. He encountered and worked with many pioneer political leaders of Singapore. He interacted with numerous foreign leaders over the years in different capacities, including as Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Singapore’s ambassador to several countries. He heard and saw at close quarters how royalty, top decision-makers and brilliant minds talked about Singapore, and how some of our pioneer leaders dealt with bilateral relations and policy matters. With his long experience in the Civil Service and with an eye to the developments past and present, V K Rajan also shared his thoughts on the issues facing Singapore and its future as an independent small state. His devotion to Singapore and what it has achieved comes through clearly. This reflection on V K Rajan’s life is impassioned, inspirational and instructive. It is wonderful reading, especially for those interested in Singapore’s history in the early decades of independence.”

COVID-19 Pandemic in Singapore
edited by Yee Sin Leo (National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Singapore) & Paul Tambyah (National University of Singapore, Singapore)
“Thoughtful, scholarly, thorough. COVID-19 Pandemic in Singapore is a must-read primer for those wanting to understand the SARS-CoV-2 phenomenon - it spans from virology, COVID19’s global spread, the early response in Singapore and worldwide, to shared experiences from those on the pandemic’s front-line. The many authors’ expertise is evidenced in their chronicling the rigorous planning and action taken to tackle the public health needs of Singapore’s different populations, diagnostics, clinical management, infrastructure expansion, manpower deployment, community engagement, and clinical research needed to mount a campaign which has thus far been successful. I highly recommend COVID-19 Pandemic in Singapore.”

The National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) is the result of many years in the planning, and it finally officially opened its doors in September 2019, just months before the entire world was tested by the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is the work of many people who represent an even larger pool of people from NCID, Singapore and the rest of the world in trying to understand and contain the SARS- CoV-2 virus. There are chapters on science, the public health response both locally and globally, as well as personal reflections from NCID and Tan Tock Seng Hospital staff and staff from other public healthcare institutions who were deployed to NCID which bring home the human impact of the pandemic. We are very grateful to all the authors for taking the time to put together their thoughtful chapters as well as the senior academics and public health leaders who have provided us with generous comments on the manuscript.
This book provides a comprehensive look at many different aspects of response in Singapore to the pandemic, including clinical, laboratory, epidemiology, research, community engagement and the unprecedented challenge of outbreak involving migrant workers in dormitory settings. On a personal note, it has first-hand accounts of staff at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases who were at the forefront of battling COVID-19 in Singapore. It also gives a global perspective of the pandemic, together with insights into the unique Singapore experience of managing the pandemic.
