ADESOPE OLAJIDE AFWL’S SHOW HOST SHARES A FEW WORDS AND TAKE US DOWN MEMORY LANE.
5 years ago, I attended the first ever Africa Fashion Week London in the heart of the city with very little expectations. Being a broadcaster on Factory78tv (the most popular African owned online tv platform in the UK), you can imagine the excitement that ran through me, desperate to see what was going to happen on this wonderful day. With a lot of social media attention about the launch of this incredible event, African fashion enthusiasts, fans of fashion and the African culture were just as eager to see the outcome of the first Africa Fashion Week London, as much as members of the media like myself. Once we arrived at the venue on the big day, it was clear what an incredible legacy AFWL, lead by Ronke Ademiluyi, was creating. The venue was buzzing with hundreds of attendees, fashion stalls and over 50 international Africa fashion designers getting their stunning models ready to walk the runway. In bringing these African designers into the heart of London to showcase our fashion and culture, the UK was now about to take notice of a new fashion week, which within its first hour of launch you could see had captivated the general public. With the queues longer than ever seen in Europe for an African fashion event, the desire to see more became apparent from that very
first day. And now, five years on, I am attending the annual event as a media representative, documenting the proceedings. I have become attached to AFWL as much as the showcasing designers, organizers and attendees! I received a call one year ago from Ronke, asking if alongside reporting on the event, would I like to take on a hosting role and host the press area on behalf of the organization; speaking to the designers, organizers, sponsors and attendees. Having seen the growth of AFWL first hand from its inception and now speaking on its behalf, it’s been incredible and emotional experience. Speaking to designers who have showcased, to sponsors who have supported the event and to the general public who have attended year on year, its fair to say AFWL has not only created an event celebrating African fashion, style and culture in the UK but more importantly, it’s created a legacy that generations of African culture enthusiasts can enjoy, particiapte and be proud of. I’d like to finish by saying a big congratulations to everyone at AWFL, especially Ronke Ademiluyi for the 5th anniversary, I’m excited about the future of this iconic event and look forward to being a part of the event for many years to come.

I first heard about the AFWL in late 2010 and had known the organisers for quite, so when Ronke spoke to me about the project I was immediately won over by it and decided to come on board. The idea from the beginning was to create a world-class platform to showcase and increase the exposure of African and African-inspired designers from all around the world. I am so happy to have been and continue to be part of AFWL. In just 4 years, we have hosted over 300 designers from all over of Africa and the Diaspora. We have given relatively unknown brands a gentle, but necessary push into the limelight. We have helped to nurture and launch fashion careers, not just for well known designers but for up-and-coming inspiring designers and models too!
My journey with AFWL started when I was invited to organise and manage the Africa Fashion Week London Banquet Dinner at The Dorchester in 2013. I looked forward to the buzz of managing the different aspects of the show ensuring it all flowed well to create a memorable event for the organisers, designers and attendees. So at any point in time, we are working with the technical and production team, selecting the right caterers, creating a special experience for the VIP guest, speaking to the venue, looking at health and safety issues, crowd control and a myriad of the aspects that need to be carefully considered and managed to create a great show. It has been fun all the way.

SOLA OYEBADE, (MR MAHOGANNY) Creative Director
I started my journey with AFWL a few months ago as the PR and Marketing Director and it’s been an eventful time so far, joining the biggest platform that promotes African and African-inspired designers and fashion people around the world. Apart from having a fantastic team who are working continuously day and night to make sure the project serves and delivers its purpose, it’s always so exciting to discover the many African inspired designers and creatives around the world. I applaud Ronke Ademiluyi, the Founder of AFWL for her vision and passion into birthing the project and wish a big congratulations on the 5th year anniversary of AFWL. It’s truly been a pleasure working with everyone.
I feel very privileged and blessed that alongside Ronke Ademiluyi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London & Africa Fashion Week Nigeria, I have been actively involved in the conceptualization of the AFWL brand and have now worked on the project as its creative director for the past five years. Over the previous AFWL seasons I have got to meet some fantastic designers and models that have gone on to become superstars and it has been very inspirational to know that AFWL gave so many of them their first opportunity to break into the fashion industry. I and the Mahogany team are so excited to be a part of AFWL history.

KAMARI ADEMILUYI Programme Manager
I first met Ronke in March 2010, when I was then Editor at Viva Magazine (published by Vivante). When Ronke told me that she wanted to do a fashion show for Nigerian designers, I jumped on board and we, along with Kamari Ademiluyi and Yemi Adegite started brainstorming. I wrote proposals, conducted presentations but misfortune hit and this event was not able to happen in Nigeria. However, with her ‘never say never’ attitude, Ronke decided to move the idea to London and that was how AFWL was born in August 2011. As AFWL celebrates its 5th year anniversary, I can only thank God for AFWL, and I know it will only get bigger and better.
Kamari Ademiluyi is the co-founder of AFWL. He is the Programme Manager for a pharmaceutical genetics research company in London UK. His management skills have supported and successfully delivered AFWL from its inception in 2011 to its now 5th year, in 2015. ‘It’s always been my sister’s dream to build a successful brand in the fashion industry that supports and helps upcoming designers grow and I am dedicated to ensuring that dream is fulfilled.’
TITILAYO ABIODUN Hospitality Manager
I have been a part of AFWL since 2011 and it’s been an amazing journey watching the event grow bigger and better with each year; from Gibson Hall to London Olympia! As the AFWL Hospitality Manager, my main duty is to ensure that guests, VIPs and staff are well catered for in a welcoming environment. In the last 5 years I have been privileged to attend Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN) twice, Africa Fashion Week Stockholm (AFWS) and Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam (AFWA) I have met different designers from all over the world and dined with fashion gurus. I’ve also had the opportunity of meeting many big names outside fashion industry all thanks to AFWL ... and the hardworking team. It’s a great privilege being a part of a winning team and I am looking forward to the next five years. AFWL is here to stay and it’s spreading across the globe.

Celebrating 5 Years of AFWL
PROVIDING SPONSORED VISIBILITY PLATFORMS FOR CREATIVE TALENTS IN AFRICAN FASHION Africa Fashion Week London is a project with a mission to help fashion designers convert their talents into enterprises that can sustain them and grow into big businesses, by giving them much needed visibility. In August 2011, Ronke Ademiluyi decided to delve into an uncharted territory by showcasing African Fashion on an international runway of her own and show the world what Africa has to offer in what it comes to fashion. This decision was born from from a calling to bridge the perceived gaps between Diaspora African fashion designers and the trends in cosmopolitan fashion. Traditional fashion runways in London and the rest of Europe are too expensive for these designers, most of whom were undiscovered, to showcase on. Fashion shows of world-class standards are very notoriously expensive to organize. AFWL had to bridge the gap by appealing to organizations to sponsor the platform in order to provide fund showcase opportunities for these designers. The first edition in August 2011, was held in the City of London area at Gibson Hall. In what was expected to be a relatively modest affair, organisers had estimated a guest attendance of around 500 people. The welcomed a whopping turn out of 4500 people through the doors.
The event showcased over 29 designers of African and non-African origin, who are all inspired by African style, fabrics and themes. The 2012 edition of the event, held at Spitalfields Market London, coincided with the London Olympics tourism frenzy and recorded an all time high crowd of over 20,000 visitors. It was the turning point of the event as it enabled it to reach frontline media such as CNN, BBC, ALJAZEERA, Chinese Cable Networks and over two hundred other media outlets blogs and fashion websites. Africa Fashion Week London established itself on the European Fashion Calendar as the biggest African- inspired fashion festival in the whole of Europe. The 2013 edition took place at the Old Truman Breweries in Shoreditch, and last year’s 2014 event saw the proceedings take place at the London Olympia, Kensington. In four years of uninterrupted fashion expos, AFWL has recorded attendance of close to 50,000 visitors and showcased over 200 designers.
