18,000 people employed by various companies at ORTIA, the airport plays a vital role in the city’s and Gauteng province’s economy, boasting an impressive infrastructure that has expanded by thousands of square metres from its original size. The head office of South African Airways is located in the municipality, as are the headquarters of low cost airline Mango, Federal Air and Safair. The headquarters of Comair, Kulula.com are also close to OR Tambo, too, with Airports Company South Africa and TAAG Angola both having offices in nearby Befordview. AEROTROPOLIS
During last year’s State of the City Address the Executive Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, announced the aerotropol concept for Ekurhuleni. An aerotopolis is an urban form comprising aviation intense business and related enterprises, with an airport city at its core. Ekurhuleni would be Africa’s first “airport

In the address, the Mayor said: “If rail, road and sea travel constitute the tried and tested modes of transport of a bygone era, research shows that air travel is the future. The main virtue of air travel is convenience and accessibility; if you have the infrastructure, you are able to cut the time it takes to ferry goods and services across time zones, on schedule and on time. “That way, the opportunity costs are reduced significantly. It is in this capacity and by virtue of our being home to what is arguably the busiest
