he past 12 months have been fruitful for Tanzania Breweries (TBL), with improvements occurring across almost every aspect of its country-wide operation; training, production, brand portfolio, packaging, logistics and sustainability. Crucial among these is the formalisation of its supply chain, formally listing its local suppliers to manage the ongoing process of expanding its buying network in a transparent and sustainable manner. The benefits coming not only through easier integration into the global supply chain, exposing 2

it to international pricing and negotiations, but local suppliers being exposed to the rest of Africa. “TBL has a very focused local farming strategy where farmers who manage their farms effectively are given technical and pre-financing to expand their business,” said Technical Director, Gavin van Wijk. “We have grown our barley output by approximately 20 percent and we are now trying to set up a farming footprint in southern Tanzania.” The increase now means over half of the brewery’s barley requirement is being sourced locally, making its goal of reaching 60 percent by 2015 highly achievable; with the ultimate

aim of eventually accomplishing 100 Sparkling Water, Grand Malt and percent. Vita Malt Plus – now have some new additions. “We’ve expanded our portfolio of Consumer choice brands to include opaque beer and TBL is continuously seeking ways non-alcoholic beverages to offer to diversify its already substantial consumers a wider choice,” said brand portfolio, a factor which has played a significant role in the Kevin O’Flaherty, TBL’s Finance company’s 80 years of success. The Director. “We’ve also recently acquired a controlling interest in an 15 brands brewed and distributed opaque beer business, Dar Brew, across the country – Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Safari Lager, Ndovu which increases and complements our portfolio further.” Special Malt, Castle Lite, Castle Stalwart brands Kilimanjaro Lager, Castle Milk Stout, Miller Premium Lager and Safari Lager, Genuine Draft, Redd’s Original, alongside the more recently Balimi Extra Lager, Eagle Lager, launched Castle Lite and Grand Eagle Dark, Bia Bingwa, Safari Malt, continue to be popular, however the brewery has noticed an increasing trend of late. “The Central Bank has been controlling market liquidity in an attempt to reduce inflation to single digits, which caused disposable income to come under pressure,” O’Flaherty added. “Due to the limited disposable income; we have seen a shift of consumption towards our more affordable offerings.”

breweries. construction of a new brewhouse at Arusha in the north is 50 percent complete. At the moment there aren’t any current plans to develop the brewery at Mbeya, close to the borders of Zambia and Malawi in the south; but being the newest, its processes and capabilities were already ahead of its older counterparts in many respects. “We are in the process of replacing the Arusha brewhouse with a state-of-the-art German brew house, the water treatment plants at each brewery have been upgraded with more sophisticated technology and controls, and we have also installed additional fermentation vessels,” said van Wijk. Staff development Increasing the abilities of its almost 2,000-strong workforce is another cornerstone of TBL’s ongoing success; an undertaking made far easier through the implementation of its comprehensive Competence Acquisition Process (CAP). The CAP system generates hard data which can be subsequently analysed, so progress can be measured and action can be taken. “It really helps to identify gaps, which are then addressed by putting in place the appropriate solutions
