Myanmar (Burma)
Magnificent and still largely undiscovered, this glorious country is slowly unfolding its secrets – its ancient palaces, elegant pagodas, legendary river, tranquil lakes and pristine beaches which open out onto either the Bay of Bengal or the Andaman Sea. Wonder at the floating villages and gardens as well as the golden stupas and Buddhas, and fall under the spell of some of the gentlest people. It’s a country which seduces all who visit.

Myanmar – Cleveland Collection Asia 07
08 Cleveland Collection Asia – Myanmar Myanmar – Introduction Still comparatively unknown as a tourist destination, Myanmar is one of the most beautiful countries in south-east Asia. In spite of years of an oppressive military rule Burma is opening its doors with grace and smiles. And what a lot there is to see and wonder at, from the pagodas and temples which straddle the land, to the colourful markets, tranquil waters, gentle hills and forests, magnificent architectural gems and totally unspoilt beaches. Cities and culture Everything starts in Yangon, the capital until a few years ago and a fast changing city which carries its history in its stride – some of the best British colonial buildings in Asia, great street markets and the extraordinary Shwedagon Pagoda. This is one of the most impressive Buddhist temples you will ever find, and its golden stupa can be seen from all over the city. Mandalay is almost the new kid on the block by comparison for it was founded less than 200 years ago. Nonetheless it still has some impressive treasures, none more so than Mandalay Hill which is studded with stupas and which gives the best view of the city – see it at sunset in all its glory. While there a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda is a must, where pilgrims cover the giant Buddha with an everlasting supply of gold leaf. From here you can take a day trip to the old capitals of Ava, Sagaing and Amarapura. At Sagaing Hill you will find 600 white painted monasteries and pagodas, home to some 3,000 monks. Another short drive brings you to the hill station of Maymyo, a British retreat from the heat and humidity.
And then of course there is Bagan, one of the most magnificent sights you will ever see – over 3,000 golden temples, pagodas and stupas which were built between the 9th and the 13th centuries. Described by Marco Polo as one of the great sights of the world, it never disappoints. To see it at its best, get up early and take a dawn balloon ride over the area. Interior Wherever you are in Myanmar you are never far away from the great Irrawaddy River which flows through its centre. Bagan is on its banks, while the cities swoop around it. Take a cruise along it as a gentle way to enjoy the countryside, as the boats dock at local villages, towns, markets and of course Bagan, where they overnight for a couple of days. Whatever you choose, a few hours or a few days, the views from the Irrawaddy are gentle and serene. Inle Lake is another fascinating port of call – a world of floating gardens, villages on stilts and magical light. Here you will find the Intha people famed for their one legged fishermen and a monastery where reputedly the monks have taught the cats to meditate! Beaches Myanmar offers some of the most unspoilt beaches in south-east Asia – miles and miles of white sand and pale turquoise sea. Head for Ngapali Beach, the premier resort which overlooks the Bay of Bengal. Apart from its idyllic setting, where ox-carts still plod serenely along the sands, this is where you will find some of the best food in the country.

In very rare circumstances, the company may have to modify your holiday before you depart. If the modification is significant the Company will notify you as soon as practically possible and you will be entitled to one of the following options as chosen by the Company:(a) take a substitute package of equivalent quality at no extra cost to you; or (b) take a substitute package of lower quality and recover from the company the difference in value between the original arrangements and the new ones; or (c) have repaid to you as soon as possible all monies paid by you under the contract, where upon your holiday arrangements will be cancelled. In addition, if the Company has to modify your holiday it will pay you compensation for non-performance of the contract (see table below for levels of compensation), if this is for any reason other than ‘force majeure’ (see opposite).

‘Force majeure’ means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond the Company’s control, the consequence of which neither the Company nor its suppliers could avoid even if all due care had been exercised. This may include, but is not limited to, war, threat of war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity (actual or threatened), industrial dispute, technical problems with transport, machinery or equipment, power failure, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, flood, drought, adverse weather conditions and level of water in rivers. If the Company becomes unable to provide a significant proportion of your holiday after it has commenced, suitable alternative arrangements will be made for you at no extra charge to you or, alternatively, you will be returned to you point of departure and given a pro rata refund for ground arrangements not received. You may also in such circumstances be entitled to compensation by the Company in accordance with the table above. (iv) Cancellation by the Company If you fail to pay the balance of the holiday price at least 10 weeks (70 days) before departure, the Company will treat your booking as cancelled and levy the cancellation charge as set out in paragraph 3(ii) above. If the Company is obliged to cancel your holiday in any other circumstances before departure, the Company will use its best endeavours to offer alternative arrangements at no extra cost to you, or offer a substitute package of lower quality and you may recover from the Company the difference in cost, or have repaid to you as soon as possible all monies paid by you. In addition, unless the cancellation has been caused by force majeure the Company will pay you compensation as set out in paragraph 3(ii).
