Thailand

A land of monasteries and temples, mountains and forests which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. An almost ideal holiday destination which offers something for all tastes, needs and desires. Go north for nature – elephants, hill tribes and the Golden Triangle, and head south for exotic islands, golden beaches and warm seas. Enjoy the excitement of the cities, the serenity of the Wats, the delights of the cuisine and the charm of the people.

08 Cleveland Collection Asia – Thailand Thailand – Introduction For many people Thailand seems to be just the place for sun, sand and sea but this ancient kingdom offers much, much more. Formerly known as Siam, it has one of the richest histories in south–east Asia, and as it is bordered by Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar & Malaysia it is the ideal hub for visiting many of the neighbouring countries. Bangkok The main entry point and one of the great Asian cities – full of life, noise, great modern buildings and magical old palaces and temples, as well as a myriad of markets from floating to flowers, food to fashion. If you are in the city over a weekend make sure you get to Chatuchak Market – the largest of its kind anywhere – 35 acres of retail. Take a taxi, bus or tuktuk to get there and go as early as possible, but for the rest of your visit the best way to get around is to take the Skytrain – easy and simple to use. Also make time for a river cruise. The Chao Phraya, the river of kings, is one of the great waterways of the world – a working river with tugs and cargo barges, it also hosts pleasure boats, river streamers and the elegant long tail boats which flit through the water. From the river you see the city in all its glory – find time to stop off and explore the Royal Palace and the Temple of Dawn. The North Chiang Mai is the northern and cultural capital surrounded by mountains and rice fields, and has more than 300 temples. From here visitors can explore the tribal areas and journey onto the Golden Triangle where Thailand borders Myanmar and Laos, and where the Mekong meets the Ruak River. Then head for Chiang Rai, gateway to the natural wonders of the north.

In fact northern Thailand is where nature lovers want to visit, for not only can you visit the hill tribes of Hmong, Lisu, Akha and Lahu, but also Khao Sok National Park , one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Base yourself at the Cheow Lan Lake from where the surrounding area can be explored either by boat or on elephant back. Another national park for nature lovers is the Khao Yai – spread across an area of over 2,000 square kilometres and home to some 2,500 plant species, 300 species of bird and an abundance of wildlife from deer to wild boar. Beaches and Islands It’s the pristine white sandy beaches that have the call of the siren bringing visitors back to Thailand time and time again. Add to that deep, clear turquoise sea, astonishing limestone cliffs and dramatic outcrops which give remarkable shape to the coastlines. Whichever type of holiday you are looking for there is an island just right for you. Phuket, one of the largest and the supreme island has everything a metropolis might offer – five star hotels, great restaurants, dazzling spas, fantastic golf courses and the sunsets you can only dream of. Smaller, with a jungle interior and spectacular waterfalls, Koh Samui is home to the Temple of the Big Buddha as well as great markets and non-stop partying at Chaweng. If you can tear yourself away from the beaches take an all day tour to Ang Thong National Marine Park which provides a spectacular view of the entire area and surrounding islands. The islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi offer some of the best scuba diving in Asia, while the smaller island of Koh Lanta offers peace and tranquillity in its isolated bays.
