Vietnam

A country steeped in drama and excitement from its craggy coastline to lush interior: a country that has survived wars, invasions and colonisation with grace, grit and good humour: a country which embraces the future and yet never forgets its past. It is a nation of colours, from the vivid green of the rice terraces to the white sand of the beaches and the deep turquoise of the sea which edges it. It has much to flaunt from temples and pagodas to scenery.

Cities, towns & culture Hanoi the capital is where most journeys start, and is home to old buildings, narrow streets, tombs and temples as well as Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and his former residence. Visit the Temple of Literature and the Fine Arts Museum and take a rickshaw tour of the old quarter. At the southern end of the country is Saigon, now named Ho Chi Minh City, from where you can take a boat trip to Cai Rang floating market, the largest in Indochina. Vietnam cruises Halong Bay

Mekong Delta

Halong Bay offers some of the most spectacular scenery you will find anywhere in the world. Off the north-east of Vietnam, it is a World Natural Heritage Site which is home to 1969 islands, only 989 of which have names, but many of which house extraordinary caves. Seen from the air it looks like a giant floating sculpture park and is a geographical miracle. A cruise along the bay is often the highlight of any Vietnamese holiday and there are a number of traditional junks on which to journey. Guests can keep it simple and take a day trip, but once out on the water many prefer to book for a two or three day cruise – it is a glorious way to enjoy this dramatic coastline and you can stop and disembark along the way to explore flora & fauna and the caves, as well as to swim and snorkel.

The Mekong Delta has long been described as a treasure trove, and being flat and fertile it is one of the largest rice-growing areas in Asia. Visitors to the area get a bird’s eye view of rural life, traditional villages and indigenous people as well as the vast paddy fields, the Cao Dai Temple and the picturesque floating markets and gardens at Cai Rang. The Delta can easily be reached from Ho Chi Minh City on a day trip for those unable to spare the time to set sail on its waters.
