The Drawings These are collectives of my sketches at the early concept, prior to the most developments of my projects throughout my study years at Berkeley CED. I believe that my architectural thinking process derives from the awkwardness of space, objects, and moments. I process the information of the surrounded built environment that way.

LOVE TUNNEL / FALSE IDENTITY MARK ANDERSON [ 100D ] [ KRAKÓW - POLAND ] JAN-MAY 2019 This project based on the tales of the love affairs between King Kazimierz and his Mistress Esterka. Although Esterka was just a fictional character, her love story with the king could be untrue or having multiple alternatives to the story ending. That’s also an opportunity for this project to grow in a way that uses the secret tunnel as an architectural element to develop an underground infrastructure. This tunnel structure used to be used by both King Kazimierz and Jewish leader Esterka. Both were good leaders and cared about their people. They did not want conflict between their people who were the Poles (Polish people) and Jews. His love for Esterka - King Kazimierz granted rights and privileges to their Jewish minorities. Esterka is a great symbolic value when it comes to the relationship between Poles and Jews. However, the peace between those two wasn’t achieved just over night. The Poles questioned the King the reason why the Jews are so much in favor of him. The king’s solution was to develop a large tunnel system that united people to work building a machine.

SHEAR THE SHEEP MARIA PAZ GUITIEREZ [ 100A ] [ SAN FRANCISCO ] AUG-DEC 2017 For this project, I experienced spaces being slicing off or shearing (cut) objects. The double negative spaces are created by applying sheared objects intersecting each other space experience as a result, feeling walking inside a stretched space. “Shearing the sheep” I would say, and see what is remained. Spaces in this project are created the same way. Sheared spaces by shearing parts of objects. .

SHEAR THE SPACE The imagination of space is sheared or in another word shaving / cut out of an object. It creates negative spaces that can be occupies.

17

Double Negative - Dissecting spaces This design exercise involves carving out positive spaces to create negative spaces through multiple simple intersecting operations.

18

Double Negative Stairs - The Serial Sections The staircase are shown in serial section manner to observe the space quality as cutting through the object

UNFOLDED SECTION PERSPECTIVE Diagrams show the relationships between books and circulation. Path of Books is created by shearing arross volumn to form a main circulation. It is wrapped around by book shelves.

THE CITY GAP PROFILE City gaps is a core idea for this project where these gap can becomes a large corridor, which wrap around 2 main programs. Both programs are 2 separated entities which links with a corridor building skirt and visual interation.

24

THE ALLEY DAVID ORKAND - 100B [ SAN FRANCISCO ] MAR-MAY , 2018 Good Food project is a multi-use food building. The building’s form was intended to mimic the city gap by separating it into two simple volumes. This building is broken apart, thus divides the programs into greenhouse versus public uses, a.k.a production versus consumption - Separated entity but connected with visual contacts by an outdoor terrace. From one to another building creates a sense of separation but also connection. People are in separated volumes between production and consumption are visually connected.

25

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS 2 simple volumes are separated, then rotated and core kitchen is submerged into the left building.

WOVEN TOGETHER MARK ANDERSON - 100D COLABORATED WITH GENE LEE x CHERRI JEONG [ KAIRA LOORO - AFRICA ] MAR-APR , 2019 <Woven Together> is a design proposal that challenges the preconception of peace pavilions. Most peace pavilion projects consist of large gathering areas that are well lit, allowing for communal contemplation. This project, however, recognizes privacy in the act of contemplation and reinforces that understanding with smaller vertical tubes where individuals can enter to experience the enclosure of the densely woven structure. Programs are executed in two simple concepts—24 pods that erect vertically for private contemplation and three horizontally oriented circulation tubes that weave through the vertical tubes.

32

33

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS Weaving together the rings as a modular structure. This structure also distinct the main programs, the large horizontal tube as central circulation and vertical tubes are contemplation hub.

PROCESS OF MAKING This photo shows the process of laying out the structure plan, rings are tide together, in the purpose of forming the core structure shape.

METAL STAIR ARCH - 160 GROUP MEMBER CAMILLE VISTICA x PROUD CHOLSAIPANT x JAQUELINE SERANO MAR-APRIL , 2018 The project is to design and build a metal staircase which including a minimum 11x17” platform located 24-30” above the ground. Our initial concept is to build the stair base of trusses system. It then evolved into trusses-like or diagonal metal bars. Design is to create diagonal language but it is also structure. We building our stair through welding mitre joints and angles of metal bars. The angle of 1/2” bar are oreinted throughout the stair are base of the angle of the stair’s slope which are welded to 3/4” core diagonal structure. Thinner structures create hierachy of core structures.

THE RAIN ERIC CESAL - 100C [ VIETNAM ] AUG-NOV , 2019 As a developing country like Vietnam, flooding issues in multiple suburban areas have been a dilemma for many years. This site takes place in a suburb in Hanoi capital; in which flooding happens every year. It has been a troublesome disaster affecting lives there. In this studio, students explore an architectural response to the disaster rather than a solution to one. Can rainwater be collected and filtered? As a water supply architecture, people can evacuate there and access clean water.

The Platforms Locals used the roof to access through a rough flooded area. This concept influences the project. Eventually, these roofs become the leading circulation platforms

WHAT ISSUES ARCHITECTURE CAN TACKLE What is a natural disaster - or disasters are just earth’s regular activities until humans call them so.

43

THE PROPOSAL Local House Typology

LONG HOUSE TYP. FLOOD VS REGULAR CONDITIONS Long Houses are largely common in Vietnam. Those houses are designed for merchants who run convience stores in the community. So, they usually own numbers of products. These houses usually are 2-3 stories, where living is top and businesses are below.

SQUARE HOUSE TYP. FLOOD VS REGULAR CONDITIONS Square Houses are largely common in Vietnam. Those houses are designed for farmers as career which is often handed down by one’s ancestors. So, they usually own numbers of chickens, cow, pigs or ducks. Those animals are kept in their yards or back of the house.

THE STORY OF “EM TEO” ( LITTLE BROTHER TEO ) AND HIS FAMILY Teo lives in a happy family with her mom, dad, and his older sister. They make low income, but they are happy, and they are also good people. Dad cooks very well, so; he owns a small treet-food business. And mom owns a small convenience store. Every year, the flood level rises higher, which affects their livelihood and Teo’s life. He then realizes that he needs to protect himself from the danger. He needs to know how to swim.
