PROJECT FOCUS Cervical screening at the AfriKids Medical Centre The AfriKids Medical Centre is AfriKids’ most established sustainability business, treating up to 50,000 people a year and providing vital hospital services to Bolgatanga’s community.
The focus of the last five years since AfriKids bought what was at the time a small sleepy clinic, has been to bring the centre up to hospital status. Now that this has achieved this, it is beginning to provide specialist women and children’s services. With a dedicated reproductive health unit and excellent paediatric training support from the GAS partnership, the AfriKids Medical Centre is well placed to become the first provider of cervical cancer screening in the area.
Text ‘AFMD01 £5’ to 70070
This service will be run at the AfriKids Medical Centre using straightforward existing screening methods and provide cryotherapy treatment to women diagnosed as carrying the Human Papilloma virus that can lead to cervical cancer, thereby preventing the needless deaths occurring with far too great a frequency in the region’s hospitals. We try not to ask you all to give too often in this newsletter, but this is a truly unique opportunity for just £5 each to save lives, please do give. If you wish to help you can send cheques made payable to AfriKids to 21 Southampton Row, Holborn, London, WC1B 5HA or transfer a donation to our account (Sort Code 30-96-38 Account Number: 01680392) and let us know by email: joannastewart@afrikids.org

AfriKids Ethical Trade is making its presence! Shea mooti provide skincare for mothers and babies, made from shea butter provided by AfriKids Ethical Trade. It is produced in northern Ghana by the self titled ‘AfriKids’ Daughters’ a collective of women’s co-operatives who through dignified income generating activities have become self-sufficient and able to secure the futures of their own families. With International Women’s Day just gone and Mother’s Day coming up, Shea Mooti have a lovely description and summary of ethical shea butter production on their website... Shea butter, also known as karite butter, is a cream-coloured fatty substance made from the nuts of karite nut tree or “the tree of life”(also called Mangifolia trees) that grow in the savannah regions of West and Central Africa. Karite trees, or shea trees, are not cultivated. They grow only in the wild, and can take up to 50 years to mature. In most parts of West Africa, destruction of the Shea tree is prohibited because this little nut provides a valuable source of food, medicine and income for the population. In fact, shea butter is sometimes referred to as “women’s gold” in Africa, because so many women are employed in the production of Shea butter. AfriKids is now able to stock products from Shea Mooti and all these are listed on the next page. A perfect gift for mother’s day! AfriKids Shop Online
