Spend a little time shopping at the outlets. Electricity supply is deregulated. That means you can compare electricity suppliers to find the best deal. In fact, there are qualified electricity suppliers in the BGE service area competing to supply your electricity. But since there are no “electricity malls,” what’s your first move? How do you compare?
First, obtain your list of suppliers. You can find a list of competing residential electricity suppliers in this ad and online at www.shopforelectricity.com. Each listing includes a website and a phone number where you can compare rates and contracts. You should contact these companies directly.
Use the “price to compare” on your BGE bill. To make accurate comparisons with other companies, find your “price to compare,” which is clearly marked on your monthly BGE bill. Weigh your “price to compare” directly against prices you receive from other suppliers. Choose the supplier that meets your needs. If you choose another supplier, they’ll handle the changeover. In July of 2006 you began to receive a credit to defer the full impact of the electricity supply rate increase. This credit still applies even if you choose another supplier.
BGE still delivers. Whichever company you choose, you can still rely on BGE for the safe delivery of your electricity, the maintenance of the lines and equipment, and emergency response in case of an outage or downed lines. As provider of last resort, BGE will also supply your electricity if you don’t choose another supplier.

Gift giving guide The days have grown shorter. The bed has grown warmer. By now the trees should be looking pretty bare. All of these signs tell us what? Winter is on our doorstep. To some, winter brings long faces. People find it hard to look past the challenges of the frigid weather — rising heating costs, black ice, holiday scurrying—they all rise to the surfaces of our minds. But, winter does possess gentleness and is a fertile time for growth. In fact, it’s the season that inspires giving and growing. When compared to the other three, winter is the only season that can create a masterpiece with few colors; it gives us simple beauty and simple lessons. After a heavy snowfall, have you ever lost yourself staring out of your window then immediately became thankful you had a window for viewing? Have you ever looked at untouched snow scenery and wished it could last forever, but was thankful at the same time that for those who have to endure the harshness, it’s temporary? Winter is the only season where we see neighbors actually working intimately together toward a common goal. Giving time and a helping hand become almost commonplace. We

The ‘always perfect’ gift By Dorothy Rowley
Finding the perfect holiday gift can be tough. You ponder, you strategize, then ultimately wonder if you’re going to make the right selection. With so many gift ideas to consider, is it any wonder many people suddenly get cold feet and procrastinate when it comes to the yearly task of holiday shopping? Trinkets for the gift-giving season may sit well with office co-workers or singles keen on little knick knacks for decorating their first apartments. But, for grandma — enough already. She more than likely has a storehouse of handcrafted ceramics, smiling dolls and a zillion other cutesy figurines. So what’s a weary shopper to do to ensure grandma’s gift is special this time? Shoppers can make Christmas selections all the more grand by presenting granny with items she’ll relish such as a potted green plant or framed photo of her loved ones. Plants can provide a sense of caring

Holiday nostalgia and novelty
Celebrating the first
Christmas
By Tyra E. Williams The holiday season provides feelings of both nostalgia and novelty. Tradition mixed with the anticipation of something new. Caroline Agunbiade seems to know bundles about both. Christmas came exceptionally early for 31-year-old Caroline Agunbiade— in June. Despite the sticky sweltering summertime heat, Caroline, new Nigerian mother of twins, already had her mind set in the Christmas holiday mode. On most outings she would wrap her tiny bundles of joy in thin blankets as if they were gifts. “My children are my gifts from God,” says Agunbiade. “People would gather around my double stroller, asking to see them, both Debbie and Emmanuel always seemed to enjoy the attention,” she continued. “I’m excited about my first Christmas with my kids. My kids will be six months during the holiday season,” says the radiant new mom. Caroline, whose husband owns a real estate brokerage company based in New York City, looks forward to celebrating the holiday with her new children, husband, and visiting mother-in-law from Nigeria. A combination of maternal longing and biological ticking made Caroline Agunbiade keenly aware of her desire to bear children. After several years of trying to conceive, Caroline underwent several surgeries, to make the dream of bearing children a reality. “In my culture, children are very important—they are your wealth,” reflects Caroline. “I don’t plan on buying my kids gifts for Christmas. 8 Trends
Trends winter 2006.indd 8
I plan to give my kids the gift of myself and our family for Christmas,” says Caroline. Caroline’s mother-in-law, Felicia Agunbiade, will spend her second Christmas in Maryland. Her first was some two years ago, as Caroline first embarked upon the “road to motherhood.” Felicia promised to come back to Maryland once Caroline delivered the
Achebe’s classic, Things Fall Apart; she lulled both babies to sleep. “On Christmas day, a large celebration would take place. Neighboring villages, at least four, would go to church to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. After the church service, the villages dance all the way to the king’s palace, where they are judged and the best dancer wins a prize for his or her village. We would then go home and have a big feast,” says Felicia, still rocking the babies in her arms. Debbie offers a grin in her sleep. Caroline appears just as enchanted as the children. She offers questions in her native tongue of Ibo. “Right now, my children are still very young, so they will not know what the gifts are.” Also, I want them to understand the true meaning of Christmas and not adopt the distorted Western ideals of ‘A-gift-is-amust,’ during the holiday season.” Caroline’s job as a child welfare advocate supervisor at a nonprofit organization taught her all about societal ills. “It was very disturbing to see what kind of background the kids came from. Now as a mother, especially, a new mother, I feel like Photo by Travis Barnes I want to shield my kids from everything,” says Mrs. Agunbiade. babies, to aid in their first year of development. Gifts that help you keep those
New Year’s resolutions
by zenitha prince Resolutions. Like the shimmering, rainbow-hued confetti that brightens up New Year’s celebrations at ballrooms and bars all over the world, so too do resolutions cast a rosy glow of hope, second chances, renewal and progress over the new year. Yet, like confetti, resolutions often find themselves quickly scattered like dust, trodden underfoot, dirty, swept up like trash, forgotten. Too often and for way too many people, the past is often a trail of broken promises. “I’m going to lose that extra padding around my hips!” Not so much. “I’m going to organize those garbage bags of paperwork!” Yeah, right. “I’m going to be engaged by the end of the year!” Still waiting. So why is it so hard to keep New Year’s resolutions? “I think they don’t work in part because we haven’t planned them out. Unless we’ve set up some definitive plan, we really aren’t going to do it,” said the Rev. Bertha Borum, pastor of Transformation Baptist Church in Baltimore. “We think, ‘I’m going to say the words and that advances me.’ But that’s not enough.” Planning is definitely key to success, but people also have to help themselves succeed. In fact, if with a little foresight and planning and some measure of selfishness, people were to think about themselves first when purchasing gifts for Christmas, they could buy the keys to their success. Here are some gifts that can help you help yourself in keeping several major resolutions.
filling your pot with gold Financial responsibility is a virtue that almost everybody wants to claim at the end of the year. It seems easy--spend less, save more. But reality often proves way more difficult. And of course if maintaining a robust savings account is troublesome, developing an investment portfolio, maximizing tax returns and other financial goals seem even more impossible. With technology, however, says financial advisor Robert Gregory Jr., Ph.D., tending to your finances can be less scary and more manageable. “People can buy financial software programs like Quickbooks and TurboTax to help them manage their finances their own way rather than putting it under someone else’s control,” says Gregory, who works for AXA Financial in Towson, Md. “And of course, in my business, an introduction to a financial planner is a good gift and it’s free.” Nothing like letting someone else do the work.

spiritual healing You are hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t want to be “a better person,” who doesn’t want to break a sinful or self-destructive habit, get in touch with their spiritual side, and build a relationship with a Supreme Being, God, Allah. “For most people, especially those who are actively involved in church, spiritual resolutions are pretty high up on the list each year,” Rev. Borum says. But too soon you find yourself breaking the vow-cussing out the guy who nearly sideswipes your car, refusing to get up and give the tired old lady your seat on the bus, neglecting to read the Bible, Torah, Qu’ran or other holy book or forgetting to pray. The best tool to solving this problem is something
that can’t be bought, Borum said. “The most important gift is something we can’t buy and that is time. The world is moving so fast that you often have to make an appointment with yourself to find the time to read, or study or just meditate,” she said. However there are some things that can save you time or at the very least make the best use of the time you have. Thanks to technology, versions of the Bible, Qu’ran, inspirational books, messages, sermons and more can be found in tape or CD version, offering almost unlimited mobility options. “You can listen while you do housework, listen on the stereo in the car or at work you can listen to them on your iPod or portable player,” Borum said. Several audio Bibles and other books can be found at Barnes and Nobles and other bookstores for $30 and up. Kvisionbooks.com has audio tapes of the Qu’ran. There are also software versions of these texts at sites like www.thinkall. com, www.download.net or www. biblegateway.com. To keep track of your progress, Borum suggests buying a journal, which can be purchased for less than $10. Or if you are a techie, try maintaining an online blog.
ain’t over till the fat lady...loses 40 pounds Losing weight is the 300-pound granddaddy of quickly and oftenbroken resolutions. If it weren’t, “The Biggest Loser” wouldn’t be the popular television show it is today. And as with other resolutions, time
or the lack of time is the biggest impediment. People have to juggle an increasing number of interests and responsibilities in a limited amount of time, leaving individuals with precious few moments for themselves. So before you know it, your dedication to losing weight flags, begins to crawl and then quickly gives up the ghost without so much as a whimper. “We have all these good intentions but as soon as family, work, relationships get in our face we put our own priorities off to the side,” said Ali True, personal training director at Downtown Merritt Athletic Club in Baltimore. The biggest favor you can do yourself, True said, is to break your piggy bank and hire a personal trainer. It’s not inexpensive. At Merritt, personal trainers come with a price tag of between $65-$70 per session and that varies with the number of sessions purchased and whether you purchase the package as a group. But the expense is worth it in terms of keeping you accountable and seeing results,

the broken, redundant, little-used and outgrown items and take them to your nearest Goodwill or Salvation Army. Store the bulk of the “keepers” in plastic bins, which are affordable and easily obtained from a local Wal-Mart or other retail store. As for the more regularly used toys, there are many shelving and decorative storage options that will clear the clutter and beautify the space. In the closet, compartmentalizing is a good thing. Check out Target for its many closet organization systems, which come in wood or metal and include a combination of shelves, racks, hooks and the like. Or visit www. stacksandstacks.com for more options. For keeping track of those bills and other paperwork, I suggest throwing out the old desk and buying an escritoire. Sure it’s a bit frou-frou, but with all its little cubbies, separating the love letters from the gas and electric bill is that much easier. Of course if you are attached to your old desk, retail stores offer a number of good options from desk organizers, to filing drawers and plastic file totes. As for organizing your time, I strongly suggest becoming friendly with the hi-tech world and purchasing a PDA (personal desk assistant.) I have the PalmOne Zire 72 and it alerts me when a task or appointment is imminent, has programs to help me keep track of my spending, has an extensive memory for contacts, allows me to make voice memos and work on Word documents and has an audio player and camera among other features. It also hooks up to my computer and updates my contacts list, project organization calendar entries and other information. It has truly been a godsend. True said. “It’s great to get a personal trainer because you are forced to keep an appointment,” she said. “And because you have someone pushing you and changing up your routine, you’re constantly shocking your system and you see the results.” If you prefer to do it on your own, you can purchase a gym membership, which ranges from about $30 per month at your local YMCA and upwards at area Curves, Gold’s Gym, Bally’s and other local sweat houses. Gym memberships are good choices since it allows you an escape and more options. Many are now offering a range of exercise experiences from dancing, martial arts, swimming and other aqua-based exercises and more. If the gym experience does not cut it for you, you can always purchase pieces of exercise equipment. True believes that option poses a problem since “home equipment often become clothes racks.” “They are cumbersome and can be a waste of money because people don’t use it,” she said. Still, if that’s the way you want to go, True recommends an elliptical machine, for those with ankle, knee, hip or back problems; a treadmill for others and a Bosu ball for abdominal, stretching and stability exercises. I’ve found that exercise tapes can be useful as well--nothing makes me sweat like a Tae-Bo workout and Pilates is wonderful for stretching and sculpting my muscles. But the key, True said, is to buy and use a variety of tapes so your body does not fall into a rut.

So, if you are away from home and want to see your own television—while you wait in a coffee bar, eat with the kids at McDonald’s or anywhere you might set up your computer and have Internet access, you should have a Slingbox. For approximately $200 you can add this functionality to your home entertainment setup. For those of you with a satellite system, TiVo or another DVR system, this technology really shines, allowing control of those devices through SlingPlayer, allowing you to time shift from your home television remotely. Technology doesn’t get much better than this.

Do It Yourself gifts:
Don’t break your budget this holiday season By Aisha R. Brantley Ah, the joy of Christmastime, when children spend sleepless nights with visions of toys dancing through their heads, and the family communes while enjoying a feast. Between the office gift exchange and your upcoming family gathering, it seems like you’ve got so many folks to shop for. Since you’re on a tight budget this year, it’s time to spread good cheer without spreading your pockets thin. With the inside scoop on low-cost gifts that are sure to please, you’ll stack savings and reduce stress, regardless of whether you’re shopping for the boss or Big Mama. Better yet, with a little patience and a creative spirit, you can make your loved ones gifts customized to suit their tastes. No bah, humbug; it’s easy.
Gifts for entire families Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their two kids have made your Christmas shopping list. So instead of purchasing individual gifts and spending individual fortunes, why not give them all the gift of quality time and a movie? Try a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video Gift Card. A $10 card will allow them to view two movies right in the comfort of their home, and you can breathe easily as you cross a family of four off your list.
DIY — Movie snack basket:

What to give — or even make — for that special uncle, coworker or friend? Most men appreciate the latest in music and movies, and getting him a CD or DVD at the right time will help you pay less. Here’s how: Find out his favorite music artists and genres and then pay attention to when new releases are scheduled to drop. Your patient awareness will most likely land you a deal on a new CD for $10 or less at Best Buy, Circuit City or Target. A new DVD costs a bit more, starting at $13.99 at those same stores.
Smell-goods for the special guy: How sophisticated it is for a man to be clothed in a sweet-smelling scent. The widely popular TAG Body Spray for Men, which is often perceived to be expensive cologne, smells great and fits into a tight Christmas budget at only $5 each. Varieties of the 3.5-ounce spray include After Hours, First Move, Lucky Day and the beloved
This wooden vase costs less than $10; $13 with the floral insert. Other wooden or glass centerpieces make excellent gifts for the home or office. Visit the Home Décor department of Ross, Burlington Coat Factory and Wal-Mart.
If you’d like to make the family a gift instead, purchase a family-friendly movie on DVD and snacks for them to nibble on. Pick up a medium-sized wooden basket (starting at $5 from Wal-Mart) and run to your favorite dollar store for cheap packages of gummy bears, popcorn and miniature candy bars. Be sure to arrange the snacks around the DVD, and add a few canned or bottled drinks if they fit easily within the basket and your budget. You can complete the look of the snack basket by covering it in plastic. Creating this movie snack package to suit a family of four costs about $20 when you limit the cost of the DVD to $10, find a basket for $5 and spend $5 on the goodies. If you’re uncertain about the family’s taste in cinema, choose a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video Gift Card for the basket instead of the DVD. 14 Trends
Gifts for men
Fresh, Pure Sport and the popular Mountain Rush are available at most drugstores for under $5. You may be able to find an Old Spice Body Wash and Deodorant package, which often hits shelves of department stores, for the same price or less.
Gifts for women Pretty jewels to adorn the neck, wrists and ears are a favorite of women year round. So instead of fighting the holiday crowd at the mall to buy jewelry, make your own. Spreading good cheer from her wrist to her ear is simple. You’ll need one pack of stringed hemp, one pack of beads, three pendants, earring hooks, scissors and an hour of your time.
DIY — Beaded jewelry set: Using the stringed hemp, determine the length of the necklace and size of the bracelet you want to make. With scissors, cut the hemp according to the size you determine (16-18 inches for necklace, 7-9 inches for bracelet; use yourself as a guide for sizing). Necklace: String colorful beads in a consistent pattern onto the durable hemp. Allow about 2 inches of bead-less space at the ends for tying and untying. Tie a knot at the end of each side next to the last bead to secure the beads and — voila — place in a box or a small gift bag for that special lady who’s been nice all year. If you want to include a pendant, be sure to string it on first and surround it with beads so that it hangs front and center. She’ll love the personalized touch if you use beads and a pendant of her favorite colors. Bracelet: String colorful beads in a consistent pattern onto the hemp. Unlike the necklace, you’ll need to tie only one knot that

Millions of African Americans, their friends of other cultures and Africans throughout the Diaspora prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Kwanzaa. The week long holiday that began some 40 years ago has become a traditional holiday season among African Americans where peace and brotherly love are emphasized and recognized. Kwanzaa is celebrated every year between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. “This historic moment belongs to all who made it possible. Indeed, in African tradition, we are taught that we should never claim solitary achievement. Not because we do not have and demonstrate personal initiative and creativity, but because we realize that in a real and profound sense all that we do bears the clear imprint of those who have touched and contributed to our lives and to each project we engage in meaningful and decisive ways,” said Continued on page 21

Maulana Ron Karenga, the founder of Kwanzaa. Karenga along with several other African cultural advocates started this as part of a national movement after the Watts riots in Los Angeles. The organizers also created a “critical” value system called the Nguzo Saba - the seven principles. These principles have become a guiding force by which many African Americans live their daily lives to promote peace, harmony
and tradition of learning stressed since ancient Egypt, and the heritage symbol to reaffirm and reinforce the African commitment to tradition and history. Ayo Handy Kendi, founder/ director, African American Holiday Association (AAHA), has been sharing the principles of Kwanzaa for decades by offering workshops, an African marketplace and entrepreneurial opportunities for youth.

The ultimate getaway gift
Martinique gives U.S.
‘zouk’ By D.M. Owens It’s a warm sultry evening on the Caribbean island of Martinique, and inside a spot called Chez Les Pecheurs, it feels like a party. This simple bar/restaurant in the Northern coastal town of Le Carbet is utterly unpretentious (envision a large circus tent with sand floors and outdoor restrooms), yet delicious food, live music and a festive atmosphere draw both locals and tourists from all over the world. The sound of laughter and people chatting in French, Creole and English fills the air, while tantalizing aromas waft from a tiny open kitchen, where cooks fry batches of the day’s fresh catch. Seated on low wooden benches, patrons feast on local dishes like codfish fritters, lentil beans and rice, served on plastic plates at long communal tables. Many wash it all down with a favorite drink called tipunch, a potent concoction made with the island’s famous rum, lime and sugar cane syrup. Yet the hearty meal and fellowship are only part of the festivities; a band called Caraibe Percussion will take the stage late in the evening. Just as a sunny climate, plentiful beaches, palm trees and French culture help define this small island (50 feet wide, 22 miles long) which was claimed by Columbus in 1502, so too does its music. Music is part of everyday life in Martinique. From nightspots to festivals, you will hear traditional music such as mazurka and biguine, a 22 Trends

dance rhythm characterized by guitars and banjos, as well as the drum based chouval bwa and bel-air. Then there’s zouk music, which comes from a Creole slang word for “party.” This rhythmic style of music originated in the `80s in Martinique and the neighboring island of Guadeloupe, though its roots are in cadence music from Dominica. A fusion of French, English and African influences all help contribute to zouk’s unique sound. Zouk musicians play indigenous instruments like the tambour (a large drum); the chacha (a tin can filled with stones); and t-bois (thin bamboo sticks). That’s blended with guitars, horns, a drum set and electronic instruments such as the synthesizer and a vocal chorus rounds it all out. While legendary zouk bands like Kassav “which took Europe and Paris by storm in the `90s” were the standard-bearers, today’s generation of artists have their own style. Some have even begun to incorporate traditional Martinican music and zouk with the edgy flavor of American hiphop. You hear it in the streets, radio and see it on Zouk TV, a television
While zouk is best known across the French Caribbean, French-speaking African nations, Brazil and Europe, it’s also being heard more in The States. since world music and Afro Pop are becoming a “phenomenon” elsewhere around the globe. “Afro Pop is a broad term that connects music with one big story about Africa, the history of slavery to breaking free in the post-colonial independence era and beyond,” Eyre explains. “It has to do with the emotional character of the music and a sense of solidarity.” He says today’s Afro Pop artists tend to fall into two categories. The first category includes those artists who are interested in international radio play or record sales; the other artists rely mainly upon the local audience “often so large and faithful there’s little need to cater to the larger community.” Major record companies like Sony (whose European division signed Kassav) are beginning to see the wisdom and potential sales of those artists who fall within the first category; those in the second group often remain with small independent labels, while still commanding impressive fees for local concerts and events. While most Afro-Pop, by its very nature, is a “vehicle for countries to express their true nature,” says Eyre,
the music is often impacted by outside influences. For instance, hip-hop is one of the elements changing the dynamic, he says. “It is blowing apart music all over the world.” He adds that “there’s an adaptation of hip-hop style, but often a rejection of the message, if it’s violent or disrespectful to women.” Yet the music you hear in the Caribbean or Africa is not necessarily tame. “There’s always been diversity in the

world music scene. It runs the gamut from uplifting to raunchy. But most African inspired music is positive black soul,” he says. Whether it derives from Martinique or South Africa, there’s typically a rousing beat and a message that resonates with people. “It’s insiders’ music that celebrates history and culture,” says Eyre. “It’s really about celebrating [a sense of] belonging.”

zouk, despite what can sometimes be a “language barrier” for much of the American audience. “It’s most dominant in French speaking areas and African countries that are former French colonies such as Senegal,” says Mattei. But it has also “penetrated some of the English speaking Caribbean,” he adds. Zouk also has major fans well beyond the islands, according to Banning Eyre, editor of Afropop.org, a Brooklyn-based web-site that supports a public radio series of the same name. Heard on stations nationwide, the show highlights the music of Africa and the Diaspora. “In the early ‘90s zouk reached a fever pitch,” says Eyre. “It crossed over big in Europe and the Paris scene. The audience was very receptive. It’s big dance music.” The music was also finding favor on this side of the Atlantic. As one of the nation’s leading employers, McDonald’s provides opportunities for professional growth from our restaurants to our corporate management. Working at McDonald’s can also lead to owning your own restaurant, and joining the ranks of the other 1,200 African-American owned restaurants that generate billions of dollars in annual sales. To help our communities grow even further, we sponsor organizations like the United Negro College Fund, which provide millions of dollars in scholarships each year. We think it’s safe to say we are truly rooted in the success of our communities.
