Martha Rivera Chavis was not just the wife of civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., but by all accounts, from those who knew the Dominican Republic-born activist, Rivera Chavis strived just as hard as her beloved husband for freedom, justice and equality for Blacks and other minorities. “I met Martha in 1993 when she was head of the

Former U.S. President Barack Obama holds Jolene Jackinsky’s 6-month-old baby girl while posing for a selfie with the pair at a waiting area at Anchorage International Airport, in Anchorage, Alaska. An Alaska mother is cherishing cellphone photos she snapped of her wide-eyed 6-month-old baby in the arms of former President Barack Obama. Jolene Jackinsky was at Anchorage International Airport on Monday looking for an airline when she ended up in a waiting area for private flights where a man she thought looked like Obama was sitting. “As I got closer, I thought: Oh my God, it is Obama,” she recalled July 7 from Newhalen, a small Alaska village where she’s vacationing. Obama then walked up to her and asked “Who is this pretty girl?” They chatted about how fast children grow while Obama carried baby Giselle. Jackinsky took a few photos of a smiling Obama carrying Giselle, who was wearing a straw hat with a white ribbon. Obama told them he was headed home from a vacation, Jackinsky said. Airport officials were not immediately available Friday evening after work hours to confirm that Obama had stopped there. When Giselle’s father approached, Obama joked, “I’m taking your baby,” Jackinsky said. Giselle was calm and content during the brief encounter, Jackinsky said. “It was only five minutes but it was a moment that will last forever,” she said. She posted the photos on Facebook. “I think it’s unreal and pretty exciting that I get to have a picture with him and my baby,” she said. “Not a lot of people get to meet him.”

Temporary Restraining Order Issued Against Rob Kardashian

By The Associated Press A court commissioner on July 10 issued a temporary restraining order against Rob Kardashian in response to the reality television star’s posting of explicit images of his exfiancee on social media. Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner James E. Blancarte granted the order based on filings by Kardashian’s ex Blac Chyna, who also claims he hit her in the thigh earlier this year, knocking her down and leaving her bruised. “Rob has been violent with me in the past and I am afraid to be around him,” Chyna, whose real name is Angela White, wrote in court documents filed Monday in Los Angeles. The order bars Kardashian from contacting Chyna or AP Photo/Jae C. Hong coming within 100 Blac Chyna and her attorney Lisa yards or her home, car or workplace. Chyna sought a temporary restraining order on Monday, less than a week after Kardashian went on a tirade against her on Instagram and Twitter, including posting explicit images of her. Blancarte sealed exhibits in the case, citing their explicit nature. Bloom has accused Kardashian of cyber bullying. Blancarte said his primary concern was the former couple’s infant child. Bloom said in court that nannies would handle custody transfers while the order is in place. Kardashian did not appear at Monday’s hearing. His lawyer Robert Shapiro apologized on his client’s behalf outside the courthouse. “We apologize and have offered our regrets for what has taken place over the past couple of days,” Shapiro said. “And now we move forward to do one thing and one thing only: Whatever’s in the best interest of the child. A ratio very close to 2 to 1. Paris Dennard, Senior Director of Strategic Communications, at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund proposed this is partly a reflection of the higher proportion of women enrolled at 4-year institutions nationwide. “I’m not certain of factors that contribute to why the disparity of enrollment exists, but I think looking at enrollment is a good place to start,” Dennard wrote in an email to the AFRO. Education Policy and Director, Urban Education Policy Program at Brown University, provided three possible explanations for the disparity. Firstly, there are more opportunities outside of college for Black men and men in general when it comes to careers that do not require post-graduate or even post-high school degrees, the professor said. These careers include apprenticed and journeyman trades like construction and the military, both of which skew male. A second explanation that may be promoting women’s enrollment as opposed to depressing men’s enrollment is the types of work that require master’s degrees. “Because I run a master’s program of education policy at Brown, when I look at the statistics it’s closely aligned with what I’m seeing in our program,” Wong said. “That is, when you look at programs that are related to children or family services, in general, it’s more likely that

It could be that when it comes to those kinds of processes, Black female students are more on task than the average Black male student,” Wong added. Smith said there were a broader array of forces at work on Black men enrolling in college. “I wouldn’t say it’s about loans, but it’s about a complex myriad of extenuating social circumstances, economic, social, socio-economic, psychological as well, that have contributed to the dearth of AfricanAmerican males enrolling in college and completing their degrees,” Smith said.

Improve Healthcare, Don’t Destroy It Health care is one of the most personal and consequential issues that Congress tackles, as it touches every single family in our county. In the heated debate about the best way to improve our health care system, some in Washington have lost sight of the human consequences of the actions we take here. That’s why it’s so important for lawmakers to hear from the people they represent about Chris Van Hollen the impacts of Congress’ actions. I’ve heard from thousands of concerned constituents in Baltimore and across the state. Shehla, a single mother of three children, wrote to us about how she relies on Medicaid to help her disabled son as she works hard to keep a roof over their heads. Jamal, a small business owner, shared that his wife would have died without the insurance she

The plan being rushed through the Senate would have catastrophic consequences. received through the Affordable Care Act at our recent health care forum hosted in coordination with the Collective Empowerment Group and local churches. Mary, who is recently retired, wrote to us saying that despite saving for her retirement, she might not be able to access a nursing

home for her and her husband. The plan being rushed through the Senate would have catastrophic consequences. The proposal would strip health care away from tens of millions of people in Maryland and across the country and gives tax breaks to the very wealthy and special interests. There are ways we can and should improve our health insurance system, chief among them is increasing choice and affordability on the Affordable Care Act exchanges. I’ve also joined my Democratic colleagues in the Senate to introduce legislation to bring stability to the health insurance marketplace. But the Republican bill — written in secret without a single public hearing — doesn’t even come close to making care more accessible or affordable. In fact, it would decimate the insurance market and leave millions more Americans without insurance. I stand ready to discuss ideas to improve our health care system — as long as the common goal is to increase access and affordability of care for Marylanders. But the plan that Senate Republicans put forward fails that basic test. I urge my colleagues to go home and listen to their constituents –

the children, working families, and seniors who would be devastated if the Republican plan became law. More people need to see the human impact of the Senate Republican health care plan, which would dismantle much of our existing health care system without offering a viable alternative. I stand with Shehla, Jamal, Mary, and every Marylander who wants to improve our health care system — not destroy it. Chris Van Hollen is a U.S. Senator representing the state of Maryland.

The Future of Morgan’s WEAA-FM As dean of Morgan DeWayne Wickham State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication, I oversee the operation of WEAA-FM. It is in this role that I write to you today regarding the future of Morgan State University’s NPR affiliated radio station. Let me begin by assuring you that WEAA-FM is not closing – and it is not getting rid of its jazz programming. WEAA-FM is a university funded radio station that was created 40 years ago as a learning lab for the school’s students, whose tuition and fees continue to heavily subsidize its operation. Maintaining the station’s role as a “learning lab” is an essential part of my job. It’s also a major justification for Morgan’s support of the station’s operating costs.

So, it should not surprise anyone when I say that the primary mission of WEAA-FM is to be a learning lab for Morgan’s students. Ensuring that Morgan’s radio station meets its educational mission is a job that I take seriously. But I believe we can – and will – do this while also making sure that the station is a source of quality music, news, talk,

I repeat: we’re not getting rid of jazz. and public affairs programming. I repeat: we’re not getting rid of jazz. In fact, it is our intention to expand the opportunity for people in WEAA-FM’s broadcast area to hear our jazz programs; and to find ways to expose our jazz, reggae and

Latin music shows to people who may not currently be part of the station’s listening audience. But just as the radio industry has not been static, the way we program WEAA-FM shouldn’t be either. In its 24/7 broadcast operation, Morgan’s radio station has room to also address the musical tastes of people in our urban market that we currently do not serve. We will look for ways to reach them, too. Morgan President David Wilson has assured me of his commitment to WEAA-FM’s future – and I assure you of my determination to make Morgan’s radio station an even more impactful “voice of the community.” DeWayne Wickham is the founding dean of the School of Global Journalism & Communication at Morgan State University.

The Challenges of Being a Returning Student I had a moment of reflection one August afternoon in 2015, when I realized I wasn’t happy where I was in my life. I am 36-years-old who stopped being happy because I wasn’t satisfied with my current job because of the goals I set for myself. I am grateful that I have a job however, I am now at a place in my life in which I need to focus on my career choice. I have been at the Baltimore City Office of Child Support for six years and I am now ready build a career in the field of journalism. I always had a passion for writing and I knew that someday I would find my way to the field of journalism. I became a student at Morgan State University in 2001and due to some unforeseen circumstances, I had to leave the university in 2003. Previously, I majored in English with a minor in journalism. When I returned to finish my degree in 2015, I decided to finish what I started, a degree in journalism. Due to changes in the curriculum I would need more courses and another year to earn a degree in journalism. This was frustrating because I felt I didn’t have the time to complete the requirements because I work full-time and am

a mother of two as well as a wife. The majority of my coursework takes place on campus which means I need to alter my work schedule. My supervisor allows me to leave work early to attend classes and in exchange I work longer hours on other days. While my hours are long so far I have managed to maintain good

…I am now at a place in my life in which I need to focus on my career choice. grades. My other dilemma was fitting in an internship that would work around my schedule. Because I have a full time job finding an accommodating internship was difficult. Amazingly, I was able to secure an internship with the AFRO. With the career path I have chosen, an internship is often the best way to break into the field. Journalism is a field that is currently in turmoil with many news publications cutting workers and hiring less due to the shift to the world of online. For example, Baltimore’s City Paper on July 7 announced that it will be closing later

this year. It is almost impossible to get a job and I think that this aspect is the most frustrating, learning how to take on so much while not having enough time in the day. Being a mother, wife and student remain a challenge but are rewarding. My children and I sit at the table while doing our homework together because I want them to know the value of education and how far it can take you. I want them to see how hard I’ve worked to reach my goals even though I took a break from college. When I first started Morgan I was child free, single and not ready. My GPA wasn’t great and I wasn’t focused. Now, I know what I want in life and I understand the true meaning of working hard. It almost seems as if I needed the rigorous schedule to really appreciate this journey. My husband has been my rock as well as my greatest support system. If it wasn’t for him, this journey would be much harder. I am grateful to have such a support system. I will continue to strive and focus on reaching my graduation date, May 2018. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Erika Brooks is an intern in the Baltimore office of the AFRO-American Newspaper.

He is also the vice-chairman of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. He is the key figure in the “Wilmington 10” case, wherein 10 people face a total of 276 years in a North Carolina prison for their 1972 participation in organized protests against racism in schools. In early 1971, the Rev. Mr. Chavis was in Wilmington, N.C. participating in the “vital struggle for liberty” which resulted in criminal conspiracy and arson (burning a grocery store) charges against him and nine other persons. The case is now known nationally as the “Wilmington 10.” The charges stemmed from their participation in church rallies in support of students seeking fair treatment by

John Kasich (R) but got no convention delegates at that time. Grosso said he, his council colleagues and other city leaders are committed to keeping D.C.’s values. “Everyone has a right to freedom, education and quality health care,” he said.

Grosso said he is concerned with the direction of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in her support of charter schools, vouchers for private schools and undermining the nation’s public school system. He also expressed concerns about the Trump administration’s cavalier attitude toward cleaning up the Anacostia River and it’s gutting of the National Endowment of the Arts that finances cultural,

teachers in administrators in the newly desegregated schools. Rebuffs from school officials resulted in boycotts, marches on the school administration building and a full-fledged movement of protest. The atmosphere was filled with racial tension. A Martin Luther King Memorial Birthday demonstration had been disrupted by vigilantes. Chavis, then North Carolina field organizer for the UCC Commission on Racial Justice, was invited to Wilmington to help in the school crisis issue. On Saturday night, a fire broke out at a white-owned grocery store a block away from the church. As a 17-year-old black student left the church that night, he was shot to death. No one has ever been charged with his murder. Next morning, a white man was killed, two blocks away from the church, Chavis says. This brought about an immediate curfew and calling out the National Guard. The students and their supporters managed to evacuate

the church, but the minister and his wife were forced to leave the city for good. It was a year later that the Wilmington 10 were arrested. Significantly this occurred right after Chavis had attended the 1972 National Black Political Convention in Gary, Ind. In addition to the Rev. Mr. Chavis, the Wilmington 10 includes eight young black students, between 18 and 20 years of age and 34-year-old Ann Shepard, described by Chavis as “one of the few whites who offered us support.” Upon conviction, the students were given 29-year prison terms; Mrs. Shepard 10 years and the Rev. Mr. Chavis 34 years. All served several months in prison before being freed on appeal and high bail. Now, if the N.C. Supreme Court denies the appeal, their right to bail can be revoked and they may be re-imprisoned. Chavis says that being a minister “has served to give me continued determination and faith to not give up. Because of our case, the eyes of a lot of people have been opened to the injustice.”

Indicted officers, Hersl, Taylor and Jenkins

By Stephen Janis Special to the AFRO An already notorious group of Baltimore police officers facing allegations of theft, overtime fraud and racketeering were hit with new charges this week, expanding both the scope of their alleged crimes and raising questions about how a previously-celebrated gun unit appeared to operate with impunity. The superseding indictment handed down by a federal grand jury this week outlines a series of brazen thefts by three members of department’s Gun Trace Task Force: Sergeant Wayne Earl Jenkins, age 37; Detective Daniel Thomas Hersl, age 48; and Detective Marcus Roosevelt Taylor, age 30. The Gun Trace Task Force was the most recent iteration of specialized enforcement units that have executed the city’s tough on crime strategy since the advent of zero tolerance policing in the early 2000s; Like its predecessors, district Flex Squads and later The Violent Crimes Impact Division, the unit was given wide latitude to target violent offenders in order to remove guns from the streets. Officers selected for the task force often sought out the assignment, sources told the AFRO. The new charges include enlisting civilians to execute an alleged home invasion, stealing large amounts of cash from business owners and drug dealers, as well as additional charges of collecting overtime while on vacation. The new indictment alleges that between 2011 and 2016 the officers stole $280,000 in cash, large amounts of drugs and a wrist watch worth $4,000. Earlier this year, Jenkins, Hersl, and Taylor along with four other officers from the task force were indicted for robbery, drug dealing, and overtime fraud. But the new charges add a level of detail to how the officers planned and executed thefts while police officials publicly extolled their ability to take guns off the streets on a near daily basis. In a written statement, the U.S. Attorney’s office alleges during the spring of 2015 Jenkins stole 20 pounds of marijuana and $20,000 from drug dealers in Belvedere Towers, a North Baltimore apartment complex. After the

heist, Jenkins met fellow officers in the woods off Northern Parkway to split the proceeds. Later, the indictment says Jenkins traveled to a Baltimore County strip club and robbed an exotic dancer. The indictment also describes in detail a June 2014 raid on a liquor store in the southeast neighborhood of Brooklyn. During the raid one of the task force members asked the owner if there was cash on the premises; when she told them she had $20,000 to pay a tax lien, the officers called off the raid and left. Later, they used a police database to locate the home address of the owner. Then officers enlisted two civilians, identified as Thomas Robert Finnegan and David Kendall Rahim, to execute a home invasion. To ensure that the victim could not call for help, a member of the task force parked his car outside the home to intercept police summoned during the robbery. The indictment also accuses Jenkins of giving an unnamed co-defendant drugs and a gun seized during a raid to sell to pay off a debt. The codefendant sold the gun to a drug dealer. Looming over the recent revelations is the unanswered question of how the group tasked with confiscating guns were able to commit a series of brazen crimes without intervention. Some of the alleged offenses occurred during the summer of 2016 while Justice department investigators were scrutinizing police tactics and strategies, which a subsequent and damming report concluded systematically violated the constitutional rights of African-Americans. But for some residents familiar with police tactics in Baltimore the burgeoning scandal comes as little surprise. Writer D Watkins, author of the critically acclaimed book, “The Beast Side: Living and Dying While Black in America,” said the indictments recount behavior that was commonplace in his neighborhood. “This is normal, everyday police stuff for me, this is how I grew up in America,” Watkins told the AFRO. “We look at what these cops did and say, wow, this is crazy. But the truth is we’ve been speaking out about this type of behavior for a long time, and nobody did anything about it.”

…the unit was given wide latitude to target violent offenders in order to remove guns from the streets.

A Family on the Frontlines (Part 2) By Bobby Marvin Holmes Special to the AFRO Nathan Thomas feels at home in the Rosemont Community. Standing outside an old vacant townhouse, he trades memorable stories with his father Mike Thomas, a former member of the Black Panther Party, who always was committed to uplifting his community. With Nathan’s son Nate standing between them, Mike and Nathan discussed the good times living at Normount Court. But they cannot forget the painful memories that impacted their family. This is the place where Nathan was shot over a crap game. This is also where he would spend his last moments with his older brother David a decade ago.

12 Gang Members Indicted on Multiple Charges By Michelle Richardson Special to the AFRO

The U.S. States Attorney’s Office, Baltimore Police and the FBI announced July 11 the indictment of 12 members of a dangerous Baltimore gang. The TTG gang or “Trained To Go” gang, according to police are, “Ruthless, killing within their own communities, and now the alleged crimes, some dating back years, have caught up to them.” According to authorities, members of TTG engaged in drug distribution, murder, kidnapping, assault, robbery, and witness intimidation. “They do it to protect turf. They do it to eliminate and intimidate rivals,” U.S. Attorney Stephen Schenning told the AFRO.

According to the U.S. Attorney, the gang has been linked to at least 10 murders over a six year span, including a triple murder that took place almost 2 years ago. Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said at the press conference that TTG was, “calculating and cold blooded and they premeditated their killings.” “When they can leave their homes with guns in their waistbands, and execute people on the streets of Baltimore, and leave 45, 50 shell casings at a crime scene , and think they can get away with it, this is hopefully a message to them,” Commissioner Davis said. According to law enforcement, the gang often targeted areas where they lived

in the Sandtown neighborhood of West Baltimore. Each gang member Indicted faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on the racketeering and drug conspiracy charges. Five of the 12 Indicted face mandatory life in prison for murder and racketeering. These charges are death penalty eligible as a federal capital offense.

while doing one of the most arduous jobs in America, urban law enforcement. Yet, the sordid details revealed in the additional charges against, Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, Detective Daniel Hersl and Detective Marcus Taylor, members of the, “Baltimore Seven” (as we’ve been referring to them on First Edition), are the essence of what a “bad cop” is. And those bad cops make the job of so-called good cops that much more difficult. Take the case of Joe Crystal. Crystal, now a former member of the BPD, witnessed two fellow cops beat down a drug suspect in 2011. Crystal, a good cop reported the actions of these two bad cops to the State’s Attorney’s Office and for doing so, was labeled a “rat cop.” And subsequently received the rat cop treatment, when someone placed a dead rat on Crystal’s windshield. Crystal ultimately filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against BPD and then Commissioner Anthony Batts. Ultimately, Crystal was awarded $42,000 by the Baltimore Board of Estimates in 2016. So, despite the simplistic (but seemingly fundamental) admonition from Commissioner Davis that good cops report misconduct by their brothers and sisters in blue, it’s probably vastly more expedient for them to simply look the other way. Because, who wants to go through what Crystal went through? But, unfortunately the culture of expediency within the BPD probably allowed the Baltimore Seven to run the streets like a

pack of wild dogs, until they got popped by the Feds. Perhaps the most made for celluloid moments gleaned from the new charges filed last week, took place in the spring of 2015, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Jenkins (under the false guise of a DEA agent) allegedly stole 20 pounds of “high-

And those bad cops make the job of so-called good cops that much more difficult. quality” weed from a drug dealer at the Belvedere Towers in North Baltimore. Jenkins then drove Taylor and a co-defendant to a wooded area near Northern Parkway and chopped up the money, giving his two buddies $5,000 a piece. Then Jenkins allegedly traveled to a Baltimore County gentleman’s club where he subsequently robbed an exotic dancer. Ever since the grimy specifics of the new charges against Jenkins, Hersl and Taylor were made public, of course I’ve had a ton of questions. But, the question that is most visceral for me, on a street level is reserved for Jenkins. Why did Gentleman Jenkins go to a strip club (after he had

robbed the drug dealer), presumably with 10 g’s in his pocket (although there is a strong possibility his pockets were a few hundred dollars lighter after some time in VIP) and rob a stripper? Who the hell are these guys? Last week, Mayor Catherine Pugh met with Governor Larry Hogan and discussed ways the state can help Baltimore combat violence. “We’re open to any kind of possible solutions that anyone wants to talk about,” said Hogan at a news conference, who also argued the state had already spent, “a tremendous amount of money,” on law enforcement in Baltimore. Maybe part of the solution is the city’s recruitment of potential members of the Baltimore Police Department, the milieu of the Baltimore Seven and their ilk. Who are these men, where did they come from and how did they make it into the BPD? But, perhaps the most important question is, how do you effectively weed them, and others like them, out of the department? It seems like a prodigious task. But, the mostly Black, mostly poor neighborhoods of our city can’t afford to be “taxed” again by another BPD crew like the Baltimore Seven. The cost is way too high. Sean Yoes is the AFRO’s Baltimore editor and host and executive producer of First Edition, which airs Monday through Friday, 5 p.m. -7 p.m. on WEAA, 88.9.

teachers knocked on their door. Adesha Richardson was back in her old neighborhood on a hot July afternoon when BCPS teachers Abeni Amadu and Keirstin Harrison found her on a stoop talking to a former neighbor. Richardson moved out of Baltimore to Howard County seeking better schools and more opportunities for her teenage daughter three years ago. “The School system was going down hill and my daughter’s school had lost funding,” Richardson said. “Education is everything to me,” she said. “I miss Baltimore and would love to come back, but…education is everything to me… I’ve got to get my daughter to college. We are speaking of Spellman for her,” added Richardson, who was impressed with the door to door campaign of the BTU. “I love what these ladies are doing. You don’t see teachers out here in the community at all.”

The Baltimore Schools for Baltimore Students campaign, a collaboration between the Baltimore Teachers Union and the Office of the Mayor, hopes a person-to-person approach will help connect teachers directly with parents to listen to their concerns and to inform them of offerings they may not be aware of – like pre-kindergarten for 3-yearolds across the city. Forty teachers have been canvassing the city each night and all-day Saturday, intent on connecting with parents, students and neighbors across the city. Back in 2007, when David was still alive, the Thomas brothers briefly met and talked and before parting, Nathan supplied David with drugs to feed his habit and prevent him from harming anyone else. “I gave him some crack that night so he wouldn’t go do anything,” said Nathan. “That was the last time I saw my brother.” The next day David was found dead. In his late teens, Nathan didn’t foresee any of this happening. He had graduated from high school and attended college to study business management so he could start his own company one day. Nathan’s plans faded following a hard break-up with his girlfriend. Feeling demoralized, he took to the streets. His decision caused a rift within the family. Mike, his father recalled the emotionally charged day when he desperately pleaded with Nathan and David not to go out into the streets. “It was kind of a life and death decision they were making,” said Mike as he began to cry while recalling that perilous time. “They didn’t Courtesy Photo know they were making a Nathan Thomas, his son life and death Nathan Thomas, Jr., and decision. They Mike Thomas, Nathan’s thought they father. were making a decision of independence. That’s what it was for them, ‘We’re claiming our independence as men.’ I saw them as possibly signing a death warrant. So yeah, I begged them.” Tears streamed down Nathan’s face as he listened to his father share his heartbreak. He could only respond with saying, “I’m sorry….I didn’t know. If I would have known I wouldn’t have did it,” Nathan said. Overwhelmed with emotion, the two men stop talking to embrace each other as they shed tears.

Despite the pain it caused his parents, Nathan went on to spend 10 years on the streets selling drugs, which resulted in 3 felony convictions. He eventually grew tired of “the life” and after a decade hustling, finally made a change. Nathan eventually landed a position with AmeriCorps, a civil society program and he was assigned to the Community Mediation Center where he worked with his mother and sister as a mediator. Nathan’s work with the mediation program earned him a job as a advocacy counselor with Project Plase Inc. and later Health Care for the Homeless where he still works. Seeking to do more to address the gun violence, Nathan also joined the 300 Men March, a grassroots violence prevention organization. “I questioned myself and said, ‘Well if I can be out here poisoning this community, destroying it for so many years, why can’t I do something to help build it back up?,’” Nathan said. The effort to combat violence in the city would also attract his son Nate. “I actually remember seeing the 300 one time. And when I seen them it was like a police force walking through,” Nate remembers. “ It was like they had took over the whole street and then I saw my father.” Refusing to fall victim to the streets, Nate would go and live with his father Nathan for additional support. The change would have a positive impact on him. “My grades went from looking terrible to a 4.4 [GPA] when I graduated,” said Nate. “I set the standard.” Today, Nathan is the co-founder of Band of B.R.O.V.A.S., a new organization of men focused on supporting others in the community. He no longer lives in the Rosemont Community but he still seeks to be actively involved. “I feel like it’s our responsibility to return back from where we came and try to reach back,” said Nathan. Nate is now the third generation of community advocates in his family. As he stands between his father and grandfather, he understands the importance of his role. “It’s a piece of our family that got to stay there,” said Nate. “It can’t be broken. If our whole family motive is pushing the community to do better to stay positive then I can’t be the generation to break that.”

Jay-Z Comes Out of the Shadows on ‘4:44’ By Vance Brinkley Special to the AFRO Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be. No harm for them, no harm for me but life is short, and it’s time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed, smile. Gloria Carter (Sing) For Jay-Z, life in the shadows has only gotten him so far. While it has been four years since Jay-Z released his previous project “Magna Carta Holy Grail” and he has been able to maintain a spot in the elite of the hip-hop industry through new business ventures and featured verses. In addition, parts of his personal struggle began to unravel in the public eye. It started with the infamous elevator incident in 2014 at The Standard High Line hotel, but as time moved forward the world would start to realize that Jay-Z’s elite status was more human than we may have thought.

Cole, Rihanna, and DJ Khaled flourishing under his label, Roc Nation, as well as festivals like Made In America selling out every single year. Jay-Z could’ve just remained in the shadows and the let the money speak for itself. However, when Sean Carter announced his album “4:44” would release June 30, those questions would arise once again through the idea of asking what Jay would talk about. What we ended up getting is a project that many people didn’t see coming. With “The Story of OJ”

…as time moved forward the world would start to realize that Jay-Z’s elite status was more human than we may have thought. It was already evident that he was trying to navigate through his current life from his earlier days in Marcy projects, but that journey would create new internal battles that would eventually pour into the public eye through news developments or his wife Beyonce’s album “Lemonade.” Jay-Z could have lived by the first couple of bars his mother says at the end

already getting attention for its video using images recalling racist cartoons from the 1900s Jay’s first single alone was a foreshadowing of what was to come. But with each listen it seems like this album means more to Black people than it means to the hip hop community or Jay-Z himself. Although “4:44” is brief compared to Jay-Z’s other projects, there were several

DC Fumbles Hosting of ‘Nation’s Football Classic’ By Mark F. Gray Special to the AFRO Washington D.C.’s attempt to host a premiere Black college football classic time has run out. After six years of sparse attendance and a loss of corporate sponsorship Events D.C., the convention and sports authority for the District, cancelled the Nation’s Classic marking a significant failure in staging a game that is typically a significant revenue producer for schools and host cities around the country. “Events D.C. enjoyed the exciting matchups and great relationships with our local partner, Howard University, and visiting schools Hampton University and Morehouse College for the Nation’s Football Classic over the past six years,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, Events DC president and CEO, in a statement June 30. “As our organization continues to evolve, we feel it is the right time to shift our efforts onto other exciting programming as well as the implementation of our short-term redevelopment project for the historic RFK Stadium-Armory Campus.” When first announced in 2011 that Howard would face Morehouse in an annual classic at RFK Stadium it seemed like the game was a perfect fit. There were two iconic HBCU “Ivy League” brands scheduled to play annually in September around the time of the Congressional Black Caucus. Weather wouldn’t be a concern because of the late summer date. With scores of affluent professionals hailing from these elite institutions and other HBCU’s who live throughout the region its potential for greatness seemed high.

However, Howard’s dominance on the field and Morehouse’s inability to bring a sizeable audience to the game led to a change of teams. By 2015 Hampton replaced Morehouse which seemed to be a better fit. The “visiting” team was seven hours closer by car and since the annual event would

adding their spin to the album. “4:44” reveals Jay-Z’s private life behind the shadows that he’s maneuvered through these past few years. If the Brooklyn mogul never released any more music after “4:44,” we could at least walk away with one thing in mind: This is the most personal Jay-Z album possibly ever.

But there were several key marketing mistakes that signaled the beginning of the end. The first Nation’s Classic - in what is known as - “The Battle of the Real HUs” - was played on a Friday night, limiting the potential of a fan base from attending because it was staged opposite high school football games in the District. There was also never a steering committee to help create buzz and generate interest amongst the DMV’s HBCU community. Last year, with the game on life support, the paucity of fan support both inside and outside the stadium spelled the event’s ultimate doom. A $75 price for tailgating limited the number of fans who would pay to park outside for cookouts and socializing. D.C. Police antagonized fans after the game by blaring sirens and driving patrol cars into individual tailgate compounds as they were trying to clean up when they were being forced to leave the premises. For most major HBCU Classics tailgate parking is a critical revenue stream that offsets what the game doesn’t earn in ticket sales or sponsorships. During the days of the New York Urban League Classic as many as 50,000 fans would camp outside Giants Stadium during the game creating a better fan experience than inside the building. That carnival atmosphere became a bigger draw for the tri-state area’s Black College fan base than the game itself. The Nation’s Classic should’ve been a part of the redevelopment of the RFK Stadium area to build around by giving it an annual event especially with DC United set to relocate to Buzzard Point in Southwest. Instead Howard’s homecoming remains as the signature HBCU football event in the Nation’s Capital.

Black-owned Restaurants

Shaw Eatery Brings Back D.C.’s Flavor By Micha Green Special to the AFRO

As Washington D.C.’s landscape and demographics change, some residents say that the once “Chocolate City” is losing its flavor to new people and businesses. Yet, one Northwest restaurant is seeking to keep the flavor alive by combining food and fun. “I grew up in D.C. and the Washington area has a lot of underappreciated flavor profiles, whether it be the halfsmoke sausage… old bay spices and crab cakes...and mumbo sauce,” Andre McCain, founder of HalfSmoke D.C., a new, Black owned restaurant in Shaw, told the AFRO. Mumbo sauce is a local flavor similar to sweet and sour sauce. HalfSmoke opened its doors in October 2016. “It’s a modern spin on classic American food and classic local D.C. food that we grew up eating as children...that evoke memories of past experiences whether it be with our friends, our family, or otherwise,” McCain said.

“It’s a modern spin on classic American food and classic local D.C. food that we grew up eating as children...” – Andre McCain The food offered at HalfSmoke, “starts with the sausages, which we consider to be the star of the show,” McCain said. Sausage options include the traditional half beef, half pork “Halfsmoke”, “Italian Pork”, “Grilled Chicken”, “Bratwurst”,

“Lamb Merguez”, and “Vegan Falafel”. Despite the name, the restaurant has a lot more to offer than halfsmokes, including, create-your-own flatbreads, salads, and rice bowls, and appetizers like “Jalapeno Mac & Cheese Bites”, “Philips Flagship Crab Cakes” and “Wood Grilled Chicken Wings” that comes Courtesy photo with classic D.C. mumbo HalfSmoke Tater Tots sauce. In addition to savory foods, there are sweets such as milkshakes, funnel cakes, and cotton candy. With the full bar, patrons can enjoy the on-tap cocktails and even add spirits to their milkshakes. While the restaurant boasts gourmet options, HalfSmoke also prides itself on inexpensive prices. “It provides an option for people that’s more affordable, more approachable, than a lot of the new restaurants, that have come up,” McCain said. Still, HalfSmoke offers more than food. “The experience that we try to create within the restaurant is just as important, if not more important, than the food itself,” McCain said. There are games to play, such as UNO, Jenga, and beer pong. Patrons can sit in swings, watch music videos and enjoy food in lunch boxes. The restaurant’s layout is another aspect that makes HalfSmoke unique. “The idea was so that each person could have their own

favorite chair, their own favorite places in the restaurant, and where, each time they come, they have a slightly different experience,” McCain said. While it’s an open space, HalfSmoke has various sections. “We have a living room...where there’s couches and a fireplace, and you can sit down comfortably and wait for your food. We have the front porch, with the swing chairs. The dining room with the tables...the parlor is a little more intimate and quieter... and then the library with another fireplace and a bookshelf. Then the bar, which is sort of the center of all the actions,” McCain said. There is also outside seating with a projector, and games like corn hole. With its design, HalfSmoke appeals to a wide-range of patrons. “We have families, we have young people, we have people coming from other states, people of all races, and I think that’s sort of a testament of the best that D.C. has to offer… but also it’s a testament to the communal nature of the food, where it really brings together a lot of different people,” McCain said. The entrepreneur said his addition to the neighborhood has been positive. “So there’s been a lot of talk about the gentrification of Shaw, and I think HalfSmoke is a good representation of how that gentrification can be a good thing for everyone.” After a three-year journey to open his business, and as a young, Black man from D.C., McCain hopes his entrepreneurship serves as an inspiration. “As far as the African American community goes, I think my establishment is a testament to what’s possible. I, in high school (Woodrow Wilson) worked a few blocks away at the Up Against the Wall near Howard… and I never had any aspirations, at that time, of being in the restaurant business, and a restaurant owner, and here I am,” the 30 year old said.

He gave it to them in Africa where all the gold is stored,” Fauntroy said. Even though he was short on specifics, Fauntroy said, “God has given me a mission to declare the good news to the poor people of the world.” Then he quoted parts of a gospel song, “I’m reaching the Harvest that God has promised me.” In terms of moving forward, Fauntroy said he wants to organize a new poor people’s campaign. “The poor people’s campaign had five things: income, education, healthcare, housing and justice. This is the dawning of a new Aquarius. The 5th Dimension made the song,” he said.

In 2016 Fauntroy was arrested at Dulles International Airport on charges of writing a bad check to pay for a ball he organized in honor of President Barack Obama in 2009. A Prince George’s County judge ordered Fauntroy tp pay $19,800 to Karen Bryant, a business consultant he hired for the ball. Health Care Bill Continued from D1

August recess on July 11. It is believed that McConnell doesn’t have the 50 votes necessary to pass the health care bill because of serious concerns by conservatives and some moderates in the Republican ranks. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said on the July 9 airing of CBS show {Face the Nation}, “In my view the bill is probably already dead.” While Mila Kofman, executive director of D.C. Health Benefit Exchange Authority, isn’t a politician, she likes McCain’s sentiments. “I don’t know what the amended bill will look like,” Kofman told the AFRO, talking about the revisions to the legislation. “The bill that was introduced was analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office and it estimated that premiums would increase and coverage would decrease. If the Senate bill repeals Obamacare it would eliminate protections for consumers, also.” The District’s health care exchange is so highly regarded that Massachusetts has asked for its help in upgrading their

Kofman said that the Senate bill would charge senior citizens five times more than they are paying under Obamacare and that the bill would eliminate the preexisting clause that citizens cannot be denied coverage because of an illness. She noted that during the open-enrollment season under Obamacare, anyone who is eligible can sign up for health insurance but if the Senate bill is law, that may not be an easy for many Americans. “For example, if you are 60 years old, you pay 9.5 percent of your income on premiums but if the Senate bill becomes law, the percentage will go up to 16.2 percent,” she said. “For many people, that is unaffordable.” Kofman said that District residents will be affected if the current Senate bill passes. Where Is The Next Generation of Black Tennis Stars? By Lenore T. Adkins Special to the AFRO Could the next Serena Williams or Arthur Ashe be hiding in the District of Columbia? The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is determined to find out by looking for kids to groom for tennis, especially those living in low-income parts of Washington, D.C. DPR held a free citywide tennis celebration July 8 at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center in Ward 8 to expose kids to the sport and show their parents that it doesn’t have to be an expensive country club sport, thanks to people and sponsors at the center who often donate rackets, shoes, and other equipment. “Tennis is for everybody no matter what your skill level is or who you are,” said John Stokes, DPR’s director of community engagement. “I don’t care who you are, tennis is a game of life, for life. It doesn’t make a difference if you’re 8 or 80.” The inaugural citywide celebration on July 8 attracted about 300 people, which means DPR will organize another one that’s “bigger and better” in 2018, Stokes said. The day included free food, music, a mascot dance-off, a bounce house, an opportunity to hit with tennis instructors, a serving contest, and free tickets to the upcoming CitiOpen Professional Tennis Tournament from July 29-Aug. 6 at Rock Creek Park in Northwest D.C. The CitiOpen lineup includes past champion Gael Monfils of France. The celebration also served as a way to kick off “tennis month” in the District. The center also held a youth tennis tournament indoors for people to see the sport as it’s played inside. “To have this over here speaks to the fact that tennis is accessible or available to underserved communities, people of color and they can start accessing the sport from 3 years old,” said Cora Masters Barry, the center’s president and founder. The District takes tennis very seriously, as the celebration came just as the city kicks into high gear for tennis. The Washington Kastles, with a squad including tennis champion Venus Williams and Frances Tiafoe of College Park, is scheduled to begin its new season on July 16. Representatives from the CitiOpen and the Washington Kastles were on hand at the celebration to pass out information about the upcoming events. United States Tennis Association officials from the Mid-Atlantic district also attended to share information about youth tournaments, leagues, and related events for children in the area. “Tennis players from all over the city should come together to grow the game and get some Photo by Lenore Adkins instruction and get introduced to the game,” Ryan Walthall, 5, of Fort Washington, said Jeri Ingram, vice president on USTA MidMd., hitting a forehand at the DPR Atlantic’s board of directors. Citywide Tennis Celebration, held July 8 Rashaud Thomas, 16, won one of the center’s at the Southeast Tennis and Education youth tournaments on July 8 and won a serving Center in Ward 8. contest at the celebration, serving up a ball that clocked in at 111 mph. Thomas lives in Ward 8 and learned how to play tennis at the center when he was 6-years-old. Not only is he perfecting his mental and physical game there, but he is developing leadership skills by coaching the younger kids. “I just love it because it helps us all out,” Thomas told the AFRO. Arielle Thompson, 5, has been enrolled in the center’s Tiny Tots program for two years and spent part of her afternoon hitting with a coach and playing with other kids in the program. Arielle’s mother, Ashley Stephens, introduced her to tennis because she wanted something different for her daughter, as opposed to dance or soccer. “We don’t have that many African Americans (in tennis) and I’m not saying she’s going to be rich and famous, but I just wanted to instill something in her that she wasn’t seeing,” said Stephens, a Ward 8 resident.
