DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (over 14s to Adults)

Screened with the permission of director Julie Dash; at the dawn of the 20th century, a family in the Gullah community of coastal South Carolina now face a generational split as they prepare to migrate to the North. The Peazant family has lived on the island since their first people were brought as slaves’ centuries before. And they maintain their ancestors' Yoruba traditions.

Cited as Malcom X’s favourite film a landmark of American cinema, a truthful depiction of Black life in early 1960s Alabama with a matchless soundtrack of Motown tunes make for understated but powerful drama that still feels surprisingly modern and relevant.
