“We launched ASAS with a vision: we wanted every child to have a safe and inspiring place to go after-school. Twenty years later, the need for ASAS programs remains broad and deep. We’ve served nearly a million students, and we’ll continue our work until all students have the support, opportunities and resources that help them succeed.” – Paul Wachter, ASAS National Board Chairman

1993 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger is appointed to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, an experience that sparks his passion for teaching, coaching and mentoring youth.

Arnold Schwarzenegger teams up with Danny Hernandez to launch the national Inner City Games Foundation in Los Angeles.

“There is perhaps no more important goal for any society than providing the opportunity for its young people to have productive and fulfilling lives. As former Secretary of Education for California I know first hand how vital, well-run comprehensive afterschool programs are for our students, and seeing the impact of ASAS is one of my greatest joys” — Bonnie Reiss, ASAS National Board Director

A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER I discovered bodybuilding at a young age and it opened a window to a world far bigger and greater than I ever imagined. To excel in that world, I had to have incredible focus and determination. Most importantly, I had to dedicate myself to the profession and work as hard as I possibly could to succeed. The work habits I developed then are the same ones that propelled me to the top of my profession as an actor and later as the 38th Governor of the State of California.

1992

Along the way, I realized that it was impossible to reach any great goal alone and began to surround myself with people who believed in me and pushed me to work even harder. It was the encouragement of these mentors, friends, and family members that drove me to achieve success over the years. I consider myself lucky to have had the support of so many fantastic people. The gratitude I felt only grew as I began my work with the President’s Council on Health and Fitness, and soon realized that too many children did not have the same opportunity to discover and pursue their passions. So many kids didn’t have someone to talk to when they felt pressure from peers, someone to help when they fell behind in school, someone to teach them that being kind and hardworking are some of the most important values. That is why I founded After-School All-Stars. And, twenty years later, that is why I continue to advocate for after-school programs that give children across the nation the chance to fight for their dreams as fiercely as I fought for mine. Over two decades, ASAS has helped nearly a million students follow their dreams. Time and time again, ASAS students show they have the vision, the confidence and the passion to reach their goals - inside and outside of the classroom. Like the people who supported me so long ago, it is a credit to the many hard working teachers, counselors, coaches, school faculty, community members, elected officials, partner organizations, corporate leaders and generous donors who collectively make our work possible that so many of our nation’s young people are getting a chance to truly succeed. Thank you again to everyone who helps make this work possible. I look forward to another 20 years of success ahead. Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger Founder and Honorary Chair

SPORTS AS A HOOK DEVELOPS STUDENTS’ CHARACTER THROUGH ORGANIZED PLAY, NUTRITION EDUCATION AND OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES. 8th grader Mary G. of ASAS Los Angeles not only achieved straight A’s, she did it while training for the Los Angeles Marathon. She says her ASAS coach and fellow All-Stars gave her the confidence she needed to cross the finish line.

WE ARE READY INTERVENES EARLY WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT, OFFERING ACADEMIC SUPPORT, HIGH SCHOOL READINESS AND COLLEGE EXPLORATION OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP STUDENTS MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ACADEMIC AND CAREER SUCCESS. Tiandre B. of ASAS South Florida says ASAS changed his life. With the support of his program leaders, Tiandre transformed from an angry and disengaged young man to a true role model for those around him. Now a junior in high school, he made it past the “10th grade dip” and is on track to graduate. He serves as a Lieutenant for the City of Miami Police Explorers and is a Sergeant First Class in the J.R.O.T.C program. Sergeant Tiandre hopes to attend Stanford, West Point or Columbia and become a police officer, prosecutor or the President of the United States. Talk about reaching for the stars!

Juan H. didn’t speak English when he came to America. During his first years in the U.S., he lived with his family in a retrofitted garage. He joined ASAS as a shy boy, vulnerable to gang violence, but the program guided him to set his sights on a career in engineering. Today, Juan is a graduate of Harvard University and in a management training program at a Los Angeles company. He says ASAS helped him get on the right track and today he is able to pay for his sisters college.

LIFE SERVICE ACTION ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO LEAD AND IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITIES THROUGH SERVICE. Liliana V. was afraid to stand up against bullying but when she joined ASAS Chicago, she found a community that celebrated speaking out and her desire to be a role model to her peers. Liliana spearheaded an anti-bullying campaign at her school and is working to help develop confidence in other kids. “I refuse to walk away when anyone is being bullied—instead, I will be a positive influence and advocate in my environment,” she says. The Chicago Sun-Times published her article on learning to combat bullying.

2009 LETTER FROM AN ALL-STAR

ASAS launches its four national initiatives, which work to ensure our students are safe and healthy, graduate high school and go on to college, find careers that they love and give back to their communities.

Dear ASAS, I live in a single-parent household. My mom is my biggest inspiration. She works so hard for me to have a bright future and she encourages me every day to do my best. My mom grew up in Mexico with 11 siblings and no money at all. By 5th grade, she was on her own and had to work really hard to support herself. She moved to the United States with hopes for a better life. My mom is the reason I want to succeed. I want to show her that hard work pays off. Only my uncle went to college and graduated. There is nobody in our generation to guide me and my cousins on the right path. I want to be the one to guide them. ASAS is very important to me and my mom. My mom is happy I do fitness and enrichment activities. We don’t get gym class at school, so ASAS helps me stay fit. Also, the classes we take are things I would have never tried on my own. When they told me I was going to Texas to meet kids from around the United States at the National Youth Advisory Board Retreat, I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. But I was greeted by warm, welcoming people and all the nerves flew out of me. I got completely out of my comfort zone that week. Since then I am not as afraid to speak in front of crowds and do as much as I can to help others. I am and will always be grateful to ASAS. Sincerely,

JESSICA S., 8TH GRADE ASAS OHIO NATIONAL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Twenty years ago, our founder, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, had a dream to provide a safe and healthy environment for low-income, inner-city children during after school hours. His dream was realized with the creation of ASAS.

THANKS TO ARNOLD’S VISION AND THE HARD WORK OF OUR SUPPORTERS AND STAFF, ASAS HAS GROWN TO SERVE NEARLY ONE MILLION STUDENTS SINCE OUR FOUNDING. We take a big tent approach and collaborate with school districts, local governments, community leaders, program partners, principals and teachers to align with and build upon the traditional school day. Each day, we provide a variety of academic, enrichment and health and fitness programs to our students in 367 schools from New York to Hawaii. A large scale study of ASAS showed that our programs provided the equivalent impact of an additional month of school at one-eighth the cost of the traditional school day. 2013

We are proud of our generation of graduates who have completed high school, attended college, and are now securing rewarding careers and contributing back to our programs and their communities. As we look to the next 20 years, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to our mission while creating a new vision for how we can expand and bring our proven, scalable model to even more partner schools, communities and students.
