NYCHA | RAVENSWOOD TODAY Despite being within close proximity of various amenities and public transportation lines, the Ravenswood NYCHA is disconnected from it’s surroundings. It lacks the interchange between it’s residents and the community, creating a rift in the urban fabric which has led it to adopt the stigma of dangerous, unhealthy, and economically unstable.

The cluster of NYCHA in Ravenswood can revitalize it’s current condition by an economic and experiential retro-fitting process. This vision aims to stimulate an exchange between NYCHA and the broader community in order to cultivate opportunity for diverse incomes, mixed uses, and homegrown and local economies.

INFRASTRUCTURE AS BARRIER The Brooklyn/Queens Expressway is a megalithic viaduct that currently disconnects many dense, urban neighborhoods, while becoming the limit of potential growth in the process. It is in the shredding of this urban fabric wherein lies the greatest opportunity to transform this divisive structure into the cornerstone from which the communities become reconnected. Value can be reappropriated, and a new layer of social interaction is formed.

By defining active spaces as [live.work.play], more than one million square feet of decaying, useless, and socially stagnant spaces can be re-imagined as a distributed matrix . Multiple layers of infraculture can be integrated into the current configuration of the active Brooklyn fabric while being conscious and reflexive to the needs of the communities.

PROPOSED MODEL FOR 21ST CENTURY CITY

WHAT IS INFRACULTURE?

CENTRALIZED SYSTEM

DECENTRALIZED SYSTEM

The separation of programs and city functions have led to centralized city cores, but overall disconnected cities, making it difficult to grow outward towards the periphery and to establish true regional relationships.

The intermixing of programs that dictate the spaces of live, work, and play have led to a new city type that is decentralized. While it begins to create multiple, vibrant cores, it is also creating multiple peripheries of overall greyness, underutilized and in a state of perennial decay.

DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM

The proposed intervention for the 21st century city is to create infraculture: the tissue used to mitigate the relationships between live, work, and play. These spaces should be spaces of activity, transition, and social interactions.

DEN BOGEN SPANNEN HOW WOULD A UNIFIED PERIPHERY BEN- EFIT THE CITY OF VIENNA AS A WHOLE?

Vienna is growing at a pace of twenty thousand people per year. The first district, as well as the nine districts that encompass the second ring, are quickly reaching critical mass, as zoning and tourism are restricting the population capacity of the areas. The periphery is more than capable of absorbing said density, but the means of moving that density effectively is lacking; the major transportation systems are designed to facilitate the needs of the core. If one needs to move from the southeast to the southwest, the most efficient public transportation route would require travel from the periphery to the core to go back to the periphery - there is no effective lateral connection. The segments continue to grow disconnected from each other, share limited resources, and are essentially segments hovering in isolation.

MSAUD 2012-2013

PROPOSED Â DEVELOPMENT

The methodology intends to re-imagine the periphery. The urban fabric can be reimagined to promote cross-lateral connections. Datum lines from existing green, public, and open spaces surrounding the site provided a framework to re-organize and stimulate the growth of a promising relationship between the new development and existing transit systems. This model can be replicated along Der Bogen at moments of overlap between layers of infrastructure, while still remaining sensitive to their site-specific conditions. The idea of Den Bogen-Spannen is the proposed conceptual link between these segmented pieces of the periphery. ; districts that share similar qualities and characteristics, and could be stitched together to promote cross-lateral integration. The potential of these similarities justifies investments in the commercial, housing, and integrated transportation sectors. This allows Der Bogen to become a magnet, promoting even growth and reconnecting the previously separated communities.

HISTORIC ANALYSIS

RINGSTRASSE Growth was limited to the physical boundaries of the fortifications. Those walls became an impediment to development. Once removed, the relationship between the core and periphery became more easily mitigated. In an attempt to connect those densities, the efficient Viennese U-Bahnsubway transportation system is introduced to facilitate porosity, transforming those limits into thresholds and stimulat- ing growth.

GURTEL As those densities that scattered about the Ringstrasse became better integrated, the periphery expanded beyond the Gurtel. Similar to the Ringstrasse, the Gurtel was the site of the historic “Llinienwallen” fortification which was transformed into a series of roads as well as open and public spaces. The districts outside of the Gurtel would also follow a similar development arc: pockets of uneven densities that manifest due to the prominence of only the primary connection to the core. The proximity of the districts to the core and being within an incredibly efficient transportation system allowed the Gurtel to densify. But what happens to the areas that aren’t as well connected as you move further away from the ring roads?

PHASE II

Phase one focuses on the three given plots, owned by three different developers. In this phase, The program, predominately implemented in this phase is both subsidized/unsubsidized housing located to the south of the to site, and high end luxury apartments on the northernmost parcel. In addtion, the development of the public east-west connection via a pedestrian route is realized.

In order to propagate density, additional housing is added as well as a central park. The particular plots selected reflect the need to span westward. New automobile routes as well as additional public pedestrian and bicycle, and semi-public routes are added to help establish a micro-network. Phase two also sees the beginning of the commercial development along the existing subway line, starting with a connection from a new node at the Alt-Erlaa station to the northernmost site.

MSAUD 2012-2013

A | RENDERED SECTION PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT LUXURY APARTMENTS PUBLIC GREEN BELT

PHASE III

Phase three bridges the new development to the existing automobile routes to the south to increase accessibility to the site. Community services, cultural centers, and another small park are added, as well as pedestrian and bicycle routes. In this stage, we continue to further develop the subway station by connecting our development to the new node at the Erlaaer station.

PHASE IV

Phase four concludes with the development of additional mixed-income housing, and the completion of the commercial development of the subwayline, which also introduces office space and additional high-end residential apartments. The new public circulation network is extended through the U-Bahn development, and connects to the opposite side of the tracks, laterally stitching together these previously segmented pieces.
