Impressive turnout for inaugural run

High winds and toppling tents couldn't stop the first ever Run/Walk for Heritage in Agassiz on Saturday morning. Wind speeds were at about 24 km/hr at the outset of the run at 9 a.m., whipping papers through the parking lot and lifting the industrial sized tents from the ground. But spirits remained high throughout the event, and as runners arrived back at the staging area after the run, many helped secure the tents so they wouldn't blow away. Luke McKerrow from Rosedale was the first to cross the finish line, in the 5K portion of the event, with a time of about 22 minutes. Tom

Hoogendoorn of Agassiz came in second shortly afterward. First place in the ladies division went to Tara Patterson. First place youth was Alex Schwichtenberg and first place for seniors went to Allen Vogstad. Because this was a first time event, aimed at raising funds for the Kilby Historic Site and the Agassiz Harrison Historical Society, time was being kept only by a timer at the finish line. The strong winds also prevented volunteers from collecting the times properly as runners arrived. In the future, Judy Pickard from the Historical Society said they will look into purchasing a more accurate chip system. "Our number one goal was to get

community involvement, which we did," she said. "And we hope to continue this as a community event." While the windy weather caused a bit of chaos at times, Pickard said most who live in Agassiz are used to the spring weather and took it in stride. "Anybody who lives in Agassiz understands the wind," she said. "And everybody really helped out in the end when those tents went flying." The Walk/Run was a huge success in terms in numbers, too. There were 108 registered in the event, and about 100 showed up on Saturday morning. They raised about $4,000, but were still tallying final numbers

at press time. The Walk/Run for Heritage was supported by the Running Room, and was attended by that company's area manager, Amanda Gutteridge. She attends about 100 running events each year, and said the turnout in Agassiz was impressive. "For a community this size to culminate the interest in such a short time says something," she said. "The community really came out to support this cause." There was a 3K walk/run and a 5K walk run. Pickard said they may consider adding a 10K leg to the event next year, as well. Famous leaders broadcast live to Hope Leadercast hopes to unite Agassiz businesses to stimulate growth Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

An idea exchange involving some of North America’s most influential leadership experts is coming to Hope. Leadercast is a unique, one day leadership event including presentations by Soledad O’Brien, John Maxwell, Tim Tebow, Angela Ahrednts and Marcus Buckingham. While those speakers will be broadcasting live from the main Leadercast event in Atlanta, Georgia on May 4, people will be gathering in locations around the world take part via satellite or internet broadcast. And one of those locations is going to be the Grace Baptist Church in Hope. The event is being brought to the area through AdvantageHOPE, whose mandate is to increase and encourage business opportunities in the area. As an AdvantageHOPE board member, Riley Forman has been helping out with the Leadercast project. He says the event will be a chance to connect with like-minded people in the business community. They’re hoping for participation to be in the hundreds, to be most effective. They’re also hoping the event will have longlasting, positive effects on local businesses. “This is a call to action,” he said. “This is not to just go home and feel fuzzy for a week and forget what was said.” It’s about sharing wis-

Kent Councillor Duane Post will go up against other elected officials during the 90th annual Chilliwack Plowing Match. Each year, mayors and other officials compete in a special class at the event. The contest is open to mayors of Abbotsford, Agassiz, Chilliwack,

The mayors’ competition will run at about noon on April 14, at the field closest to 9825 McLeod Road. The winner will receive the Neil MacGregor Memorial Trophy. The event is hosted by the Chilli-

wack Plowing Society, and draws in farmers from the Fraser Valley, lower mainland and Vancouver Island. The day begins at 10:30 a.m., and includes classes for walking plows, junior tractors, antique tractors, beginners, business people, reversible plow and the B.C. Junior and Senior Championships. ships and volunteers are all from the District of Kent, as well as at least one full-time employee. They see the festival as more of a regional event, and presented that message to council. Sixty percent of the festival's 200 volunteers are from the District of Kent, and anywhere from 15 to 18 businesses are supporters of the festival. "We couldn't do what we do if it wasn't for the District," Ed Stenson said. "There wouldn't be enough volunteers to make it happen, for one." The Festival Society has faced numerous cutbacks from grant programs since 2009, including pro-

vincial arts funding and a Canada Council program which was cut entirely. Proof of support from municipalities through funding is a key element of securing grants from other sources, as well. And when municipal money dries up after years of previous support, it raises red flags in other applications. "It's important to have municipal funding from this region," Phyllis Stenson said. Councillor Holger Schwichtenberg made a motion to send the Festival Society's request back to budget talks, and that was seconded by Post and voted unanimously in favour.

Premier Christy Clark returned to Agassiz Wednesday morning, to tour two local businesses and introduce her byelection candidate, Laurie Throness. A Liberal entourage stopped in at Farm House Natural Cheeses on McCallum Road in Agassiz, where owner Debra Amrein Boyes offered a sampling of different handmade artisan cheeses, including her Alpine Gold a washed-curd, washedrind cheese. Clark and Throness were joined by Chilliwack MLA John Les for the tour, which included a visit to Rimex. Workers had a chance to chat with the trio,

and spoke of the need to have training facilities in the area to open opportunities. Clark has traveled to the area twice this year for business-related tours with Throness. While they’re making the trips through this riding as part of their byelection campaigning, Throness says he’s enjoying learning more about the area. “There are all sorts of hidden gems in the Valley,” he said, such as Farm House. “This is a great introduction for me to know where the opportunities lie for future growth.” He said if elected, “he can go to Victoria with an eye to what’s back here.” Farm House has “found a niche market,”

A Chilliwack man who was the alleged pilot of a helicopter that crashed in Abbotsford in 2005 and who has links to the Bacon brothers has been sentenced in a cross-border smuggling scheme. Dustin Melvin Haugen, 29, previously pleaded guilty conspiracy to import 100 kilograms or more of marijuana, and was sentenced last week in a Spokane, Washington courtroom to time served. This time included three months spent in North Fraser Pretrial Centre after his arrest in 2006 and 11 months in the U.S. after he was extradited there in April 2011. Haugen was one of more than 40 people arrested in 2006 in a two-year-old police operation targeting drug smuggling. He and Daryl Desjardins, 45, of

Agassiz were arrested on May 9, 2006 after returning to Canada following a drug drop in the U.S. Desjardins pleaded guilty later that year in Chilliwack provincial court and was sentenced to four years in prison. According to court documents, on the day of their arrest, police videotaped a Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter leaving from a hangar near Harrison Hot Springs and landing in an isolated area in B.C. Desjardins was the pilot, and Haugen was the co-pilot. The chopper met with occupants of a pickup truck, and Haugen was seen unloading hockey bags from the truck and placing them in the helicopter. The chopper then took off and landed in a state wildlife area in Okanogan County in north central Washington, where the hockey bags were unloaded and placed in another truck. The helicopter returned to its original location in Harrison Hot Springs, and the pair were arrested. The hockey bags that had been loaded onto the truck, and seized by police, were found to contain

135.2 kilograms of marijuana. Desjardins' plea agreement including dropping charges against Haugen, but Haugen was extradited to the U.S. and turned himself in last year. He is believed to be the pilot of a Bell Jet Ranger that crashed on a 58 Avenue property near Ross Road in Abbotsford in March 2005. The crash killed his girlfriend, 22-year-old Christina Alexander, but he was never charged. At the time, search warrant documents in a case involving drug charges against Jonathan Bacon indicated that Bacon allegedly made payments of $1,000 a month to a tenant on the 58 Avenue property so helicopters could be flown from the site. Bacon, 30, was gunned down in a targeted hit in Kelowna last summer. He was never charged in connection to the helicopter crash or cross-border smuggling. He was the eldest of Abbotsford's notorious Bacon brothers. Middle brother Jamie is in prison awaiting trial in the Surrey Six killings, and Jarrod is in custody awaiting sentencing on a drug conspiracy conviction.

Opinion Voters drive change

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Have you noticed a jump in your BC Hydro bill since having a Smart Meter installed?

There are some huge issues that matter to each and every one of us. Issues like health care, housing, education, energy, economy, the environment and infrastructure. And there is one person who is the "go-to" contact when something within that realm goes wrong. That one person is in charge of speaking up for you, whether you need someone to listen to your health woes, provide assistance to your struggling business or address a lack of proper public transit. And that person is your friendly, hard-working MLA — for which applications are currently being reviewed. The byelection on April 19 will solidify the role until the next general election in 2013. More than just a talking head, elected MLAs are expected to liaise with those in their community, and know the issues at hand. For example, ditches in Agassiz are overflowing? We should look for a representative willing to pull on a pair of rubber boots and have a close up look. Businesses up the Fraser Canyon are struggling? Then we should be looking for a representative willing to speak up for entrepreneurs, help boost tourism and support creative ideas. Keeping tabs on all points within this riding is a big job, previously filled by Barry Penner, and most recently being covered by neighbouring Chilliwack MLA John Les. While the riding's size is not as daunting as those seen in Northern B.C., it's still a large area. Regardless of party affiliation — because we know that can change in the blink of an eye — we need a determined leader willing to negotiate the best possible solutions on our behalf. It's a powerful role, being an MLA. But nothing is as powerful as the people who elect them, and nothing drives change as much as speaking to your elected officials about the issues that need dealing with. This riding historically has high voter turnout, and all the byelection candidates are paying equal attention to that loud, collective voice. For the next six weeks, you can bet they'll be putty in your hands. And that's an opportunity that shouldn't go to waste.

Gentle John Cummins? Not really B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher In an interview with one of our Vancouver Island papers before Christmas, B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins made a bold prediction that he would have party status before the general election in May 2013. That’s four seats, and it wasn’t based on an unlikely sweep of the Chilliwack-Hope and Port MoodyCoquitlam byelections, now set for April 19. He hinted he was getting calls from MLAs looking to join up, after a November Angus Reid poll showed a sudden surge to 18 per cent for his resurgent brand. We now know that one of those callers was Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen. I asked Cummins on Friday if he is still confident about three more.

“Hopeful, let’s put it that way,” he replied. Van Dongen’s explosive departure was arranged, with Cummins’ help, for maximum damage to Premier Christy Clark. Van Dongen notified the B.C. Liberal caucus that he was quitting. Then, in a questionable use of legislature privileges, he launched a broadside on Clark’s integrity. He cited the $6-million legal payout in the B.C. Rail sale, a decision made before Clark’s time, and the recent collapse of a deal to sell naming rights to B.C. Place. He described the B.C. Liberals as “an organization headed for failure,” then announced he’s joined the B.C. Conservatives. Cummins then joined van Dongen at a hotel news conference across the street, as the former Gordon Campbell cabinet minister disclosed he has hired his own lawyer to dig through the roomful of paper from the B.C. Rail case

role of Clark’s lobbyist brother, Bruce. He didn’t find the smoking gun now sought by van Dongen. This effort seems designed more for political revenge in an election year than to clarify the sorry legacy of the B.C. Rail sale that has already been examined through two provincial elections. Van Dongen was at the top of everyone’s list of disgruntled B.C. Liberals. During last year’s leadership contest, he muttered darkly about not only B.C. Rail, but also the integrity of fellow Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong. Now Clark is van Dongen’s target, with Cummins standing beside him trying to look statesman-like. Of course, van Dongen drove himself out of cabinet long before Clark returned. Chronic speeding by a public safety minister is a tough sell. I asked Cummins about the reluctance of key cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon and George Abbott

to confirm they are running again. His aw-shucks friendly-grandpa modesty precludes speculation, but he did allow it’s “maybe a comment on the state of affairs in the Liberal caucus.” Reporters started surveying government MLAs after Falcon and Abbott kept their options open for 2013. For the record, fellow ministers Terry Lake, Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, Mary Polak, Rich Coleman and Stephanie Cadieux all said they are firmly on Clark’s election team. Independentminded backbenchers Bill Bennett and Kevin Krueger also saluted the B.C. Liberal banner. Randy Hawes allowed that he’s 65, so if he leaves it will be for the golf course. As I was talking with Cummins, B.C. Conservative advisor Randy White was assuring the Abbotsford News that more defections are coming. Cummins has people for the dirty work. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

50 Years Ago, 1962 • Fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Norman Morrow sold their farm to Mr. and Mrs. J. McCartney of Deroche. Included in the sale was their entire herd of famous purebred Guernseys. However, Norman kept his beloved team of Clydesdale horses and used this team to plow at the Chilliwack plowing match later that spring. The Morrow family began the farm around 1893 and Norman and his wife Olive purchased it from his parents, James and Mathilde Morrow in 1936. The farm was located at the east end of Morrow Road. • A group of volunteers broke ground for the Elks Hall on a one acre site on Heath Road 50 years ago. The hall was to be 34 feet long and 91 feet wide, with a full basement containing a lunch area, kitchen and dressing rooms. This Elks Hall hosted many memorable May Day celebrations, children’s Christmas parties, dances featuring award ceremonies marking the end of ball season, golf season, and in general, any event that needed a celebration. Many good times were enjoyed in the Elks Hall. In the spring of 2007 it was decided to demolish the building. Now condo-

For Seniors: beginning with the 2007 tax year, Canadian residents may split certain pension income with their resident spouse or common-law partner. Up to 1/2 of eligible pension income may be allocated to the taxpayer’s spouse when the tax returns are ﬁled. In some cases this will result in a

pension income tax credit for the transferee. No funds are actually transferred using pension splitting - it is simply a method for reducing the taxable income of one spouse by allocating income, on the tax return, to the other spouse. The transfer must be agreed to by both spouses and the same percentage of withholding tax deducted, related to the pension income transferred, must also be transferred. For Students: not all fees can be claimed. To qualify, the fees you paid to attend a Canadian educational institution must be more than $100. For you to claim tuition fees paid to an educational institution in Canada, the institution has to give you an ofﬁcial tax receipt or a completed

Form T2202A, Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certiﬁcate. You have to claim your tuition, education, and textbook amounts ﬁrst on your own return, even if someone else paid your fees. However, you may be able to transfer part or all of these amounts to your spouse or common-law partner (who would claim it on line 326 of his or her Schedule 1) or to your or your spouse or common-law partner’s parent or grandparent (who would claim it on line 324 of his or her Schedule 1). For Everyone: if medical treatment is not available within 40 kms from your locality, you may be able to claim the cost of public transportation (e.g., taxi, bus, or train) to get

Kelly Lacroix

Best Renovator Kelly Lacroix aka The Renovator, is a hands-on kind of guy who has been in construction for about 34 years. He enjoys working locally as it gives him a chance to get to know more of the locals and work closer to home. He does everything from the ground up which allows him to always be doing something different. Having started out working with steel, building quonset buildings all over Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C., he was known to have the fastest crew in Canada, having a job down to a science. When he’s not working hard and

interacting with clients, to be sure they are getting what they ask for, he can be found enjoying Harrison Lake or snowmobiling in Hemlock Valley. Lacroix, also a drummer, was a drum technician for Canwood Custom Percussion (Lloydminster Sask.) building drum kits for world recording artists such as Blue Rodeo, Kim Mitchell, Idle Eyes, Northern Pikes, Dizzy Gillespie and more. Lacroix has been named the Best Renovator in the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, but he is certainly no stranger to the limelight.

In these tough economic times, connecting with customers is crucial

Visitors strolling and shopping along Esplanade in Harrison Hot Springs.

Residents choosing to buy local can make a big difference. Over the last ﬁve years, the global economic slowdown has found its way to Harrison/Kent, putting pressure on sales and proﬁtability of many businesses. At the same time, the everincreasing competition to attract tourists by Whistler Blackomb and others, has resulted in fewer visitors to Harrison,, which impacts Kent as well. It all makes for a tough business environment that, particularly in Harrison, has led to a number of

businesses closing down and others trying to sell. The good news is that even in these difﬁcult times, new businesses have been attracted to our area. Kent, as a small rural community, has the challenge of encouraging people to shop local. If more people shopped local we could cut down on our carbon footprint and at the same time support a thriving local economy. Harrison, as a resort destination, has the challenge of a short, intensely-competitive sum-

mer season, where a few weeks of rain can mean the difference between making or losing money. Attempts to extend the season have had limited success with the exception of the Sand Castle competition. However this needs to be an ongoing focus and new events in the shoulder seasons are crucial. Happily this year “Sasquatch Days” looks set to make a comeback June 9 and 10, starting the summer off a little earlier with a new event. As a resort destination, Harrison Hot Springs is much more focused on marketing through all media — especially the internet, where most travel decisions are made these days. The latest trend of using social media to engage your customers is being adopted by many Harrison businesses. Kent businesses on the other hand, tend to rely more on local ﬂyers, the local paper and word of mouth. As the District of Kent continues to grow and the price of gas continues its unstoppable rise, more residents will be encouraged to shop local and this should be

good for Kent business over the long term. Staying connected to your clients and building a relationship with them the best way you can, also helps. Harrison, on the other hand, has struggled the last 10 years and this is likely to continue for the next 10. While improvements to tourism infrastructure through provincial grants has helped the look of the lakeshore, the struggle for Harrison business is likely to continue without some major new development such as a new outdoor public pool or other major attraction. What is required is support from the local community and local government. Residents choosing to buy local can make a big difference. On the local government side, the property tax rate for business is typically three times the rate for residents in B.C. The problem is that it is much easier to raise business tax rates than residential rates since businesses don’t vote. Local businesses need support from local government, not more taxes.

The second annual Hope for Kids Swap Meet runs this Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hope Eagles Hall (386 Fort Street). Public Input Invited Proposed changes to Visual Quality Objectives within the Chilliwack Forest District The Chilliwack Forest District will be establishing updated Visual Quality Objectives (VQOs) for the Fraser Timber Supply Area (TSA) as per Section 7 (1)(2) of the Government Actions Regulation (GAR) process under the Forest and Range Practices Act.
