Adrenaline-filled activities in Abbotsford Your getaway guide for a close-to-home holiday

There are plenty of outdoor activities in Abbotsford to get your adrenaline pumping this summer. Young vendor at work Keaghan Onos has been a vendor at the Agassiz Farm Fresh Market each Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot beside The Observer. This year, young vendors are invited to come sell their handmade, homegrown or fresh baked goods.

Get rid of garbage before it attracts unwanted attention

Users aren't likely to come to a program that sits in the middle of a busy neighbourhood. "They like a bit of privacy," Lloyd said, and the program would be advertised "discreetly" by word of mouth and through similar Fraser Health programs already operating in Agassiz. Other concerns were that the needle exchange was not an injection site. "We do not do that," she stressed. A needle exchange is not all about needles, she said. "It's about harm reduction," she said, and finding ways to interact with drug users to provide information about counseling services available to them. "Addiction is everywhere," she said. "It's insidious. It's killing our communities." Lloyd is hoping to set up the mobile unit once a week for two hours, and asked council for guidance on finding a suitable location. "We are seeking, hopefully, you're approval to bring our services to your community," she said. Councillor Holger Schwichtenberg moved to have the issue referred to District staff and that move was seconded by Striker. Road,” he says. Simply observing a bear in your yard is not cause for alarm, RCMP say. Make sure all garbage is stored away and do not provoke or feed the bear. Make sure your neighbours are following the same procedures. Bears will naturally investigate food odors and are attracted to garbage, bird seed and suet, pet foods, compost piles and grease on barbecue grills. Once a bear receives one of these “rewards,” he or she may return to the same area several times (even after food is removed) to search for similar foods. Some bears become fairly tolerant of humans in these situations and appear tame. There are many things that can be done to minimize or eliminate the chances that bears will get into garbage or become a problem in your area. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself and your property: • Do not feed bears under any circumstances. Do not allow bears access to garbage or other food. Store garbage inside buildings or other inaccessible areas. Do not leave garbage out overnight. Keep all garbage sites clean. Do not leave pet food out overnight. If bird feeders have been visited by a bear, stop feeding birds for 1 to 2 weeks, and begin taking feeders in at night. • Frightening or scaring the bear. Shouting, clapping, blasting a car horn or motion-sensitive lights may scare off a bear temporarily. Do not taunt a bear if it fails to respond to your efforts to frighten it. These methods are only temporary solutions. • Sometimes when a bear is sighted, crowds may gather. This seemingly harmless situation can be aggravated as the crowd grows. People can cause bears to display unpredictable behavior.

Multiple bear sightings in the Hope area lately have prompted the RCMP to issue some tips to guard yourself from bear encounters. Bears in Hope have been reported to be opening freezers and eating contents, pushing on doors to get into residences, removing screens from windows, and lunging at home owners, according to an RCMP news release. They say the lack of berries, due to the poor weather, is leading to the increase in bear interaction. Two traps were set last week in hopes of capturing and releasing them. While there haven’t been any bear reports in this area yet, Sgt. Mike McCarthy says it’s always a good idea to be aware of the risks. And garbage is the main attractant for local bears, he adds. “That’s typically the reason the bears go between the corridor, between the base of the mountain in Harrison right up to Hwy. 7 along Hot Springs

In the wake of senseless violence and destruction in downtown Vancouver, the issue of courage has come to the forefront. The courage to stand up for what you believe in. The courage of your convictions. The courage to show your face at all times. The courage to act in a manner that you can be proud of. Now, let's put that in a different context. Let's talk about the courage to speak up and have your voice heard. One of the ways people do that, all across this great nation, is through letters to the editor. They arrive at newsrooms in all manners. Some are hand delivered, gently folded into envelopes and dropped onto editors' desks. Some are neatly printed, others typed. Some arrive by email, others by snail mail. Many people are even sending them through various newspaper's own websites, interacting online through comments below stories. Letters and comments are often passionate, sometimes poignant, and always a source of joy for the editor who receives them. It's validation that the community cares about the stories inside the newspaper. But there's two things that must always be remembered. At all times, sign your name at the bottom of your letter. And always give us a phone number to validate your existence. Because what good is a letter when the writer doesn't have the conviction to sign it properly? How strong is the message when a writer pens a letter under a false pseudonym? Where's the courage in that? If one feels moved enough to write a letter to effect a change in his or her community, then they shouldn't be doing so from behind a cloak of invisibility. Be brave. Be heard.

T After the speech, Clark took the wheel of a Chevy Volt electric car for a spin around Toronto with a GM Canada vice-president riding shotgun. Effective July 1, the tax on a litre of gasoline rises from 4.45 cents to 5.56, with comparable increases to other carbon fuels. Clark has inherited Gordon Campbell’s aggressive climate change-clean energy agenda, and it’s not yet clear what will become of it. She has committed to the last consumer carbon tax increase in 2012 (up to 6.67 cents on a litre of gas), but the fate of the big hydroelectric push remains uncertain. Those plug-in electric cars need to start selling before Campbell’s gamble of developing increasingly

Early in his goofy anti-HST campaign, Vander Zalm claimed this was plan B for world government after the conspirators failed to impose a global carbon tax. If the HST is a conspiracy, it’s a mighty big one. Let’s make Voices being ignored on gravel pit issues elected officials Okay, enough is enough. I am sick and tired of the constant daily hammering of the rock crusher at the Lake Errock Gravel Pit. I am sick of having my house and vehicles covered in dust, and breathing that crap in every day. I am sick and tired of watching my beautiful mountain scenery turned into an industrial wasteland, and I am sick of the blatant disregard that our esteemed MLA Randy Hawes, the provincial government, MEMPR, and FVRD, have for the citizens of Lake Errock, and the Deroche corridor. I am sick and tired of the threat to our watershed, and the very real risk (as displayed in FVRD documents) of potential landslides. Mr. Hawes says we are NIMBYs. Well Mr. Hawes, I say you would be also if this devastation was occurring in your back yard. You have shown from the outset that your agenda is corporate wealth, and the passing of your

pet project, the Aggregate Pilot Project, which was already a foregone conclusion. Even though we went through the mandatory public hearing stage, Mr. Hawes stated in front of numerous witnesses, that regardless of the outcome

of the public meetings, he would legislate this hated project into law. Now several months later, even though 98 per cent of public meeting attendees voted against the APP, our voices are still being ignored, and even more gravel pits are planned in the Lake Errock area. one agenda, to ignore all public objections, and authorize as many gravel pits as there are contemplated, regardless of local public concerns, and in defiance of FVRD bylaws. Who the hell do you people think you are, to openly ignore our legitimate concerns? We the people of Lake Errock are sick and tired of being lied to, ignored, and ridiculed, by the people who supposedly represent us, and our interests, our provincial government is an absolute joke. Sure, they smile and say the right things in front of camera, but the truth is that they don’t give a darn about the citizens. However, if you are a foreign corporation, they willing give away the rights of the local citizens in the name of corporate greed. In spite of numerous documentation outlining the publics’ risk of silicosis due to air driven silica particulates, Mr. Hawes refuses to even acknowledge the risks, obviously by doing so

would render his Aggregate Pilot Project in urban areas ludicrous. I suppose all our elected officials have their own personal agenda. If they bow down to foreign interests, ignore the people they supposedly represent, they too could get a plum position as trade commissioner to London. Because we have been lucky enough to be raised in a democratic country, we have also inherited the responsibility to preserve it. Citizens must take responsibility to make democracy work. It’s not every cadet that receives high praises. And one of the highest praises that can be given is the Royal Canadian Cadet Medal of Excellence. This year, Cadet Sgt. Celebrations July 1, 2011

The talented Trevor McDonald will be keeping the crowds entertained with his music, while children have a blast playing on a giant inflatable and taking part in organized games and activities. Test your knowledge with the Canadian Citizenship Trivia Contest; MP Mark Strahl will be announcing the answers at the end so that you can see if you have what it takes to become a Canadian citizen. And in Harrison, take in activities all day long. It all starts with the pancake breakfast, followed by a mass marriage vow renewal on the beach, the Harrison Historical walk and opening ceremonies at the plaza. Activities abound throughout the day for families, and later in the day, Todd Richard takes the stage just before the parade. Treble Hook will play into the evening, as the sky grows dark and the yachts light up the lake. It all ends with the annual fireworks display over the water, ending another memorable day in splendid style.

This is the time of the year when all the labour of the hard-working team, Communities in Bloom, literally bears fruit. And here in Harrison Hot Springs, nature surely is on their side. While we all often complain that it is too rainy, too cool, strawberries too late, flowers coming and going too fast – nature seems to love it! Just look at the lush countryside and the budding and blooming gardens! But, back to the Communities in Bloom Committee headed by Councillor Dave Harris. Their mandate is much broader than what meets the eye. They make sure our community keeps blooming in more than one way, though our beautiful gardens all around are the most visible evidence of their work. All it needs is one person or group to envision the possibilities, because visionaries do not grab their ideas out of the air. They see them right in front of their eyes and grab them. My idea would be a beautiful park-like garden for water-loving

plants and trees, a place to sit and rest when the beach gets too busy, with a photo opportunity spot for wedding pictures. Cadillac becomes first area ambulance 50 Years Ago, 1961 • The Agassiz Harrison district was offered a fully-equipped ambulance for $1,200, one which had formerly operated in the Abbotsford area. It was a Cadillac, with oxygen equipment and seats for two attendants as well as a wheeled stretcher and an emergency stretcher. In 1961 there were no ambulances available in this area. • Under sponsorship of the Kent Recreation Commission, students were offered the chance to travel to Cultus Lake to participate in the Summer Swim-

ming Classes offered in July. For $3 they would receive two weeks of instruction and transportation by school bus. • The new B.C. flag met with complaints when it was flown at the Agassiz High School. A letter was sent from the Agassiz Harrison Board of Trade complaining about “that monstrosity of a flag”. • Reveen, renowned Australian hypnotist then residing at Chilliwack, was scheduled to perform in the Caesar’s Forum at the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel.

Our Tourist Info Centre requires a rudimentary knowledge of our area but is supported by a wealth of maps, pamphlets and small booklets for resource

material. If your interests lean toward the gift shop, with its variety of unique and interesting locally-made treasures, we have a spot for you there, too. This is a chance to meet a wide variety of interesting visitors from all over the world. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn from them as much as to share our heritage with them.
