Jacky joins festival line-up
Most of us can’t go to Africa, but during the Harrison Festival of the Arts this summer, Africa will be coming here. Jacky Essombe has been added to the list of performers for the festival, taking place July 9 to 17 in Harrison Hot Springs. Essombe, part of Jacky’s Village, will be performing on the beach stage on July 12 and on Children’s Day on July 13. Essombe was brought in after plans to have Chuck and Albert perform didn’t pan out. Other acts to look forward to this year are Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Tambura Rasa, Colin Linden, Beoga, Etran Finatawa, Ti-Coca and Wanga Neges, HAPA and James Cotton. And that’s just a shortlist. Other events held during the festival will include a workshop with an aboriginal collaboration, the juried art market along the beach and an art exhibit at the Ranger Station titled The Beating Heart: Spirit of Sts’ailes. Britco bought by Vancouver equity fund The two men who built Langley-based Britco into one of Canada’s largest designers and manufacturers of modular buildings will be stepping aside under the terms of a $93 million purchase by the Vancouver-based WesternOne Equity Income Fund. A written statement released by WesternOne said co-founders and current owners Rick McClymont and David Taft will remain as consultants during the takeover of Britco Structures LLP and Britco Leasing Ltd., while Britco Executive vice president Mike Ridley will become president. McClymont and Taft will get a portion of profits above a certain threshold for 12 months after the deal closes June 30. The announcement described Britco as “one of the largest Canadian designers and manufacturers of commercial portable and permanent modular buildings [which also] owns one of the largest rental fleets of modular buildings in western Canada with approximately 1,200 buildings. Most of the purchase, $75 million, is being
funded by a syndicate of underwriters co-led by Dundee Securities Ltd. and National Bank Financial Inc., including Canaccord Genuity Corp., CIBC World Markets Inc., HSBC Securities (Canada) Inc., Raymond James Ltd., Macquarie Capital Markets Canada Ltd., Union Securities Ltd. and M Partners Inc. Britco was established by McClymont and Taft in 1977. The company has two large production facilities located in Agassiz and Penticton. Britco also has one of the largest lease fleets of temporary offices, construction site trailers and storage containers in western Canada. It employs over 300 people and is headquartered in Langley, with branch offices in Nanaimo and Kelowna and a sales office in Calgary. Britco designs and manufactures a wide variety of portable and permanent modular buildings, including work force accommodations, motels, seniors housing, office complexes, day care facilities, classrooms, construction site buildings and sales centres.

Chehalis Community School challenging youth
Eric Welsh
BLACK PRESS
A sign on the corner as you turn right off of Morris Valley Road welcomes you to the community of Chehalis, proudly proclaiming the tiny First Nations band of approximately 1,000 people to be drug and alcohol free. Factually accurate? Probably not. But certainly not wishful thinking either. This is what the Chehalis want to be, and they are taking steps to get there. Leading the charge, a small but dedicated group of youths who are using physical fitness as a gateway to healthy liv-
ing. Since 2008, Chehalis Community School has offered an athletics program that challenges teenagers to be better — better athletes, better students and better leaders for the generations that will follow them. “Before 2008 there were a lot of kids wandering around doing a whole lot of nothing, said Cassie Clarke-Vernon, a three-year member of the program who has parlayed the experience into a spot on the B.C. Aboriginal Girls hockey team. Greendale native Amy Adamson is one of two instructors, along with Chilliwack’s Rick
Webber, who were hired by the school to oversee the program. Nicknamed the Princess of Pain by one of her personal training clients, Adamson’s students feared the worst before meeting her for the first time three years ago. “I was pretty scared when I heard that nickname and I was like, ‘Oh no! I’m going to be so sore!’ Clarke-Vernon recalled. “I imagined someone really big and intimidating. Not someone small like Amy, who turned out to be really fun and awesome. Adamson wasn’t sure at all what to expect that first day.

“I had no idea, and the first week I found them to be quite quiet, she said. “But I was confident I could get them into it and get them having fun and after couple weeks they started to get excited about this. Adamson started out strong and earned her nickname in the early going. “I thought I was in

My legs have always been pretty muscular because of hockey, but the upper body exercises really kill me. Sensing her young charges were getting overwhelmed by those

Museum celebration draws crowds
Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
A group of about 100 people abandoned the Canucks’ playoff game Sunday afternoon to celebrate a different kind of victory. The Agassiz-Harrison Museum turned 25 over the weekend, and a reception was held in the parking lot and on the original rails that run in front of the historic building. It was an important ceremony, Mayor Lorne Fisher told the crowd. The building is an old train station, which was moved back and forth between its current location and the Ag Station before settling 25 years ago. The building is a reminder of when trains were a “vital piece of Canadian communities, and train arrivals and departures were an important part of daily life. Joan Vogstad of the Agassiz Harrison Historical Society reminded the crowd that the museum has been the site of the Tourist Information Centre for the past two years. “We’ve just signed a five year agreement with the District of
Kent to be here another five years, she said. “It’s a good mix, the Info Centre and the the museum. Harrison Councillor Bob Perry announced that the Village would like to get its own museum started. “Not to take away from this event, but we wish we had a museum in Harrison, he said. Also on hand were Carol Law and Marnie Pickard. “These two gals really got it going, Vogstad said as they cut the museum’s birthday cake. The cermony ended with an impromptu singing of Happy Birthday. This weekend also marked the official opening of the museum for the summer. Jackie Perry, who writes the weekly Echoes from the Past column for this newspaper, said they were so busy on Saturday, they forgot to change the sign to ‘close’ at the end of the day. “We were running around all day, she said. Ride CP’s 2816 Empress steam train this summer For the second summer in a row, Canadian Pacific and the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada are offering an opportunity to join them for a ride on the iconic CP 2816 Empress steam locomotive. This summer you can choose from one of 15 dates in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia and purchase tickets to ride with 100 per cent of the proceeds benefitting Children’s Wish. The Empress is a class H1b Hudson locomotive that was built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930. It is one of the very few remaining preserved steam locomotives in operation today. Last year, $50,000 was raised through this program. That’s the equivalent of five children with a life threatening illness being granted their most heartfelt wish. In addition to operating the 2816 Steam Train, CP employees have raised over $250,000 through
their employee-led bottle recycling program and other grassroots initiatives. Check out the list of available trips and make sure you book early to reserve your seat. The train will stop in Agassiz this year. Passengers get a one-way ride and there is a leg from Coquitlam to Agassiz and another leg from Agassiz to North Bend. Cost of the tickets are $30 and $40 respectively. The day the train comes through Agassiz is July 13, and it is scheduled to be here between 9:35 a.m. and 10 a.m. For more information about Canadian Pacific or the CP 2816 Empress steam locomotive, please visit www.cpr.ca For more information about The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada or to meet some of the amazing children and families they serve visit www. childrenswish.ca.
2008 murder during melee that started in the prison gym FROM 1
out at trial. At the time of the Nov. 28, 2008 stabbing, Bolton was serving a five-year sentence for manslaughter, Perovic was serving a life sentence for firstdegree murder, Sanderson was serving a six-year sentence for aggravated assault and St. Hilaire was serving a five-year sentence for manslaughter and conspiracy to commit murder. The dead man, 27-year-old Andrew Robert Craig, had started a 10-year sentence in Janu-
ary, 2004 for robbing two banks in Chilliwack, a Royal Bank and an HSBC branch. Two other prisoners were stabbed in the 2008 melee that started in the prison’s gym at about 7:50 p.m. Prison staff fired warning shots and gas to break up the fight, but Craig and the other two prisoners were stabbed before the inmates could be separated. Craig died in the prison’s health unit. An investigation by the correctional officers’ union found there were “errors made in two
groups being together in the gym at the same time, UCCO president Gord Robertson said Friday. A prison official at the time of the 2008 incident said it was not related to a fight a week earlier in the gym, which also required guards to use gas to restore order. Six inmates refused to return to their living unit after that fight, and were later caught trying to escape over a fence. The two fights so close together had sparked union concerns and an investigation was launched.

Opinion Survey says: Slow down
The tourists are back in town, businesses have re-opened for the summer, and the sun has even made a brief re-appearance. And now, the often-debated topic of traffic calming has also resurfaced. In last week's paper, a Village of Harrison advertisement asked the public to complete a survey on traffic calming measures around town. Anyone who has spent any time in Harrison will have seen carloads of yahoos using the main thoroughfare as a drag strip. And there's not a lot the Village can do about traffic calming on Hwy. 9. It is, after all, a highway — not regulated by the Village but the province. But they can calm the other roads all they want. And they have. Traffic calming measures in Harrison run the gamut from speed humps and traffic circles to raised intersections or tabletops. McCombs has become less of a drag strip and more of an obstacle course, and hopefully that keeps some unnecessary traffic off the quiet backstreet.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Are there too many traffic calming measures in Harrison Hot Springs?
While the traffic is worse in the summer, the speeders, yahoos and even drunk drivers aren't all tourists, are they? Sure, we'd like to think that locals would respect their neighbours and drive through idyllic Harrison at the posted speeds, we know that's not happening. Residents bring their complaints to council regularly — tourist season or not. And while many changes have been made in the past few years as a result of the complaints, it's hard to measure if there have been any changes behind the wheel. Some say there are too many obstacles. Others say there are too few. Perhaps this survey will shed some light on what's really happening on Harrison's roads. But in the end, traffic calming devices simply aren't enough. What we need is some common sense. If people slowed down on their own accord we wouldn't need traffic circles at all. And we also wouldn't need roadside memorials for children killed by reckless drivers.

HST debate heats up as vote nears B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher My feedback on the harmonized sales tax debate is running hotter as taxpayers await Premier Christy Clark’s “bold” changes to the tax, due to be revealed any day. In response to several angry readers, I will restate what I had hoped was obvious by now. All but the poorest consumers (myself included) are paying more tax under the HST than they were under the old provincial sales tax. The richest pay by far the most. The “embedded” PST has been removed from many products, but evidence isn’t yet clear that this is being passed on to consumers, as economists predict. What is clear is that businesses are benefiting.
What is still in dispute is what businesses are helped most. Doug Donaldson, the NDP MLA for Stikine, objected to my statement last week that he was wrong about the HST beneficiaries being “Liberal donor corporations.” So again I will state the obvious, that forest, mining and other resource companies donate to the B.C. Liberals. (The NDP is on record as wanting to increase corporate income and capital taxes.) Donaldson goes wrong when he specifies “corporations” rather than small business. Consider the forest industry. Over the past 20 years the entire B.C. industry contracted out its harvesting operations, based on the well-tested principle that independent contractors are more efficient than inflexible, strikeprone major forest operators. That has been a painful process, not just economically but in terms of worker safety. But it’s exactly the

kind of global-market shift that is being imposed on B.C. As mentioned last week, you may not like that, but you shouldn’t believe those who try to pretend it’s not happening. And those big “corporations” had their
“My feedback on the harmonized sales tax debate is running hotter...” major machinery and equipment exempted from sales tax long before the HST. It’s the small contractors who are now getting the benefit. NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston notes that anyone can incorporate for tax purposes. It’s common for doctors, dentists and lawyers such as Ralston. But is it practical to expect the owner-operator of a

logging truck to do that? The independent truck drivers I’ve met are more concerned about paying their next fuel bill than hiring a lawyer to incorporate them. Increasingly it is immigrants who drive trucks, out-working the resident population to get ahead as immigrants have always had to do. Speaking of immigrants, the situation in Vancouver real estate is worth noting. One of the things HST was supposed to severely depress was high-end new housing, now subject to the sevenper-cent provincial portion of HST once the prices exceeds $525,000. What has happened? Offshore buyers are pushing costs out of the reach of B.C. residents who aspire to an ocean view. In many cases these are “satellite families,” taking advantage of our clean, stable, safe jurisdiction on the Pacific Rim. Mum may drive the kids to private school in a Range Rover,

but the family reports little or no Canadian income. The only way these residents will pay a share is through consumption taxes. I have also argued that migration of retirees will dominate B.C.’s population growth in the coming years. This is another group that reports less income but has significant consumption. A recent BC Stats study shows that I overstated the impact of retirees. Since 1961, only seven per cent of migrants to B.C. have been 65 or older. Younger people are coming here to work, and increasingly they will be self-employed or in small business. The NDP supports lowering small business income tax to zero. They should also support the HST. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

Students from Agassiz Christian school entertained residents at Glenwood Manor on Thursday afternoon with songs and stories from the Bible.
Parks fees have had negative effects I apologize to Barry Penner if I got the timing wrong and assigned him too much blame for the parking charges his government imposed on provincial parks. He claims credit for reducing the parking fee but, by then, the damage had been done and park utilisation never recovered. The imposition of charges for firewood has had a much deeper negative impact on these parks. The forest needs every fallen branch to decompose and
provide nutrition for the trees in a constant cycle of renewal. Since the free firewood has been replaced by $7 bundles, you'd be hard pressed to find a twig within 1,000 metres of any campsite as the forest floor has been picked clean of anything which will burn. Those woods are now slowly starving to death while Victoria greenwashes the province. Did somebody say "sustainable?" John Allen

Re: Grass may get greener, Agassiz Harrison Observer, May 12, 2011 Contrary to what was suggested in a recent editorial, the grass will not get greener if a pesticide ban comes into effect in the province of British Columbia. Pesticides help control threats to human health (such as rats and mosquitoes), they protect private and public properties from insect, weed and disease infestations and they help ensure that Canadians have a safe and affordable supply of food thereby contributing to healthier communities and greater well-being and prosperity. Furthermore, only a handful of provinces have instituted unscientific, arbitrary bans and the negative consequences are starting to show, including illegal pesticide use, loss of green space, increased municipal maintenance costs, and homeowner frustration. The reality is that pesticides used on lawns and gardens are designed as tools to address specific pest problems infesting valuable landscapes. They are not "cosmetic" at all.
When it comes to health and safety, readers should know that before any pesticide can be sold in Canada it must undergo a rigorous scientific review and risk assessment by Health Canada. In addition to a comprehensive set of over 200 tests, Health Canada also reviews all additional scientifically credible studies that exist. Through this process pesticides receive a greater breadth of scrutiny than any other regulated product and only those products that meet Health Canada's strict health and safety standards are registered for sale and use. The fact of the matter is that a provincial ban of pesticide use in B.C. would prevent residents from using safe and effective tools, approved by Health Canada, to protect their personal property from insect, weed and disease infestations. Pesticides can be safely used and Canadians should feel comfortable if they choose to use them. Lorne Hepworth President, CropLife Canada

Renovation projects are a great way to add value to your home and make it more comfortable. Many homeowners know that renovating can be a big and sometimes overwhelming job. From budgets and timelines to choosing designs and décor, there is always a long list of details to consider and decisions to make. One of the critical elements is to plan with safety in mind while preparing for your renovation project. Build safety into your renovation plans by keeping this checklist top of mind.
GARDEN CARE
RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL & STRATA MAINTENANCE
• Plan ahead – It's important to plan ahead and account for the time it will take to get municipal building permits, finalize details or identify any utility lines (such as natural gas or electric) that run through your property before you start working on your project.
Licensed Professional, Fully insured, Landscape I.P.M. Certification, WorksafeBC covered. Quality commercial equipment to achieve the best results.
• Investigate before you renovate – Natural gas pipes can run throughout your home, delivering the energy you use to heat your home or cook your food. Neverassume you know where the pipes are located within your house, or what's running through them. Before you begin your project, hire a licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor to identify any pipes and what's inside them. Even during the most routine renovation projects you could damage these pipes, which could pose a serious safety risk.

• Leave room for air – If your renovation plans involve modifying the space around your furnace, water heater or appliances, be sure you leave room for them to breathe. Confirm with your licensed HVAC contractor that there will be adequate ventilation and combustion air for your natural gas, and other fuel–burning appliances, to work safely and efficiently.

Both Clarke-Vernon and Antone said they embrace the volunteering aspect. They relish the chance to work with younger kids and pitch in at an annual soccer tournament. And what they’ve learned from Adamson and Webber certainly carries through to their lives away from school. Antone said he has attained his own workout equipment and takes regular runs after school. Both activities help to keep the positive energy flowing. “You feel 100 times better when you go for a jog than when you have a cigarette,” Adamson noted. Still, even with all the positivity surrounding the program, it remains a tough sell for some Chehalis youths. “They say, ‘Eh. Maybe. Not this year, maybe next year,’” ClarkeVernon said of her procrastinating peers. “It’s frustrating because I know how much it’s helped me, and I know it could really help some of them.” Chilliwack’s Cheam Sports has helped immensely with the donation of gift certificates that are given annually to the male and female athletes of the year. Government grants and help from Nike have helped with the procurement of equipment. Anyone who wants to get involved can give Adamson a shout by email at amymadams@ hotmail.ca.

One hot, dry May 50 Years Ago, 1961 • The Harrison Mills Little League baseball team beat the Agassiz St. Anthony team at Harrison Mills with a score of 25 – 5, much to the delight of the home town crowd. • Lynn Korstad of Harrison Mills and Gayle McInroy of Harrison Hot Springs spent Friday to Monday at Camp Artaban on Gambier Island taking a short course for camp leaders. • At the annual May Day celebration May Queen Myrne McPherson was crowned in the
High School auditorium, flanked by Maids of Honour Barbara Kelly and Linda Stowell and Flower Girls Debbie Gibson and Nancy Boschak. Miss Canada Pauline Chapman represented Seabird Island. A dance followed the ceremony, with Harry Fooks leading off in the Grand March. Junior and senior square dancers entertained the crowd. • Spring Creek Logging went on early shift the week of May 25 due to the hot, dry weather. Fires were a big concern for logging companies in those days.
• At Harrison Hot Springs, Ed Becker was making good progress with his swimming pool at the Village Centre Motel. • 61 children received swimming crests from Harrison Hot Springs Recreation Commission Chairman, Eve Lees. This marked the completion of the swimming lessons sponsored by the Commission.

OBITUARIES
Erika Stoelting 1924-2011
After a long and happy life Erika passed peacefully away on May 16, 2011 Erika was born in Hamburg, Germany in the year 1924 and had many fond memories of her childhood years. As a young woman she lived in Freiberg, South Germany, where she studied nursing. After she finished her education, her desire to see the world led her to Chile where she met and married her husband Hermann. For political reasons they later left Chile and returned to Germany. In the year 1984 they came to Canada and found their ideal retirement place in Popkum, BC. There they lived a happy life until about 7 years ago when they moved to Logan Manor, Where Hermann still lives. About five years ago however, Erika's sickness made it necessary for her to move to Glenwood Care Centre. Erika is survived by her husband Hermann, who would like to express his deepest gratitude to the staff and management of the centre. Their excellent care certainly made it easier during the last few years, for Erika as well as her husband and everybody who came to visit her. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Harrison Hot Springs Memorial Hall on July 27, 2011 for all her friends in hiking and singing.
