1. AGASTYA’S MISSION Agastya was founded in 1999 by a group of scientists, educators and executives to spark curiosity, and nurture creativity and leadership among economically disadvantaged children and teachers in India. Agastya’s vision is of a creative and entrepreneurially enabled India; its mission is to propagate a creative, scientific temper among disadvantaged and vulnerable children and teachers, via a) engaging, minds-on, experiential learning methods, b) teacher education and c) cost-effective, environmentally friendly channels. At a meeting with Agastya’s Chairman in 2003, the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam outlined the three key challenges faced by India, namely
Bridging the growing socioeconomic divide between urban and rural India Arming young people with curiosity and creative-thinking skills Creating self-belief among Indians
The message Agastya gives out to young people is this: “Observe and learn. Ask questions, find out how and why things happen, and then look for solutions. Learn to work and communicate effectively with others. You can make a positive difference to yourself and to others”. Agastya has successfully implemented hands-on education programs for over 5 million disadvantaged children (of who 50% are girls) and 200,000 teachers. The Agastya Model of an Ecosystem for Hands-on Science Education is being fully replicated in Karnataka while key elements of the model are successfully operating across 13 states in India, including the NCR region. By creating opportunities to acquire transformative hands-on learning and behavioral skills Agastya’s programs raise motivation and self-belief and develop critical/creative-thinking skills. Instilling such skills is essential to raise India’s capacity to acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit information, knowledge and capital to create an innovative, productive and prosperous society. HOW THE AGASTYA MODEL IS RELEVANT TO INDIA’S FUTURE

a) MOBILE SCIENCE LAB: The Mobile Science Lab (MSL) is a very powerful and innovative instrument to revolutionize rural education and make hands-on education increasingly accessible. It is a catalytic channel that is fun, engaging and interactive, aimed to raise awareness among disadvantaged children and teachers of the value of learning - with a focus on science. Each MSL travels to doorstep of remote schools with 200+ hands-on science models covering a wide range of topics in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Math for Class 5 through 10. The teaching approach is consistent with the National Curriculum Framework and the topics overlap the NCERT syllabus. There are also experiments not directly correlated to the state syllabus but are intended to spark curiosity and encourage questioning among the children.
3
Annual Report Agastya-SSA Operations Karnataka
The demonstration sessions emphasize interaction and questioning. Children are able to relate better to concepts explained through interactive demonstrations rather than through rote learning. MSL’s are highly effective in delivering large science fairs, and reaching community members through night community visits too. Night community visits allow the child beneficiary’s parents, family and community members to participate in learning sessions about various beneficial topics.
We have 204215 student and 8729 teacher exposures through mobile lab program Following table shows the unique number of schools visited by Mobile labs

b) SCIENCE CENTER: At the Science Centre, hundreds of experiments and models are exhibited in Science (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology), Math, Ecology and Astronomy. Government school teachers and children visit the center, and are given the opportunity to interact with simple science experiments and models. Science Centers act as a resource center, teacher training center, venue for special training activities like; project based learning, discovery based learning, integrated learning, Young Instructor Leader training, summer camps and science fairs. The Science Centre is a space for children and teachers to experience learning in a hands-on, interactive and positive environment. Children perform experiments, learn to make simple models with easily available low-cost materials and participate in team-based projects.
We have 162740 student and 12625 teacher exposures through science centers Following table shows the list of unique schools and students visiting the science center

c)LAB IN A BOX (LIB): Lab in a Box (LIB) is a unique concept designed by Agastya out of many years of experience to facilitate scale-up. Science models/experiments are organized concept-wise based on pre-designed learning modules, mapped to the school syllabus, and placed in boxes - typically ten boxes covering majority of physics, chemistry and biology concepts. These boxes are then distributed to various schools across the target geographic area and a teacher from the government school is trained to use the models and experiments for hands-on teaching in their classroom. The boxes are left with the teacher for about a week and this facilitates hands-on learning in the school over a period beyond the visit of the Mobile Science Lab to that school. Agastya follows a rotation scheme of distribution involving ten schools at a time, whereby the ten boxes in one set of LIB are available to each of the ten schools for a week in a three-month period. Agastya instructors continue to facilitate sessions, train teachers and clarify scientific concepts during the deployment of LIB throughout the program period.

3. MEGA SCIENCE FAIRS: A key challenge for educators is to engage children in ways that will maximize the joy of learning and help improve retention. Cognitive scientists have shown that the human brain retains in its long-term memory 90%+ of what we teach. Agastya makes use of this critical insight when developing our experiential programs that focus on learning through participation, peer-to-peer teaching and handson activities. This approach has demonstrated an increased level of motivation, higher levels of participation, better concept retention and strengthened leadership among children. Science Fairs are held to enable reach to a larger group of children across space. Using simple models, Young Instructors* demonstrate scientific phenomena such as the solar and lunar eclipse, seasonal changes, concepts such as pressure and volume relationship and the protein chains that link together to form insulin. The Science Fairs, in addition to targeting a large audience of children, serve as a platform to encourage Young Instructors to demonstrate science concepts to their peers (through the peer-to-peer learning method). This facilitates greater interaction and understanding of concepts, boosts confidence and improves their communication skills. Science Centers as well as Mobile Science Labs are both capable of supporting and organizing Science Fairs. (Annexure-1 for details)
We have conducted 27 Mega Science Fairs from Aug 2014 to Feb 2015. Photos of Mega Science Fairs:

4. TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM: Agastya general aims in teacher training is internalization and rapid dissemination of hands-on science learning, improve Student-teacher interaction, provide more hands-on learning opportunities, improve overall learning and understanding of concepts and to improve school performance over a period of time. Hands-on experiments are very easy to understand the complex concepts. Extend the training program from 2 days to 7 days, so that we can learn a lot. Experiments can be carried out easily in the classroom. Very useful, because all the experiments are related to syllabus. Conduct more sessions on developing low cost models. Conduct more and more training programs for the same group. Resource group is excellent.
5. FEEDBACK (Students & Teachers) We the students thank the Agastya international foundation for the different experiments conducting in our school. We enjoyed and took active part in groups and presenting in the class. Through these experiments we have learnt many things. It was helpful for our learnings. – N Pallavi th
